Time moves both ways

"He was beautiful, the old man remembered, and he had stayed." This has to be my favourite paragraph in 'The Old Man and the Sea.' Recently read it for the first time, went down to the ocean. Had the salt water in my nostrils and the seagulls and waves in my ears. But of course Hemingway takes you there with his prose, no special effects required. The characterisations of the non-human creatures of the sea may be very anthropocentric, but they're beautiful--written with due reverence and brutality. I love this book for the empathy in it. Between the man and the boy, the author and the tale, the man and the sea, and the marlin. I feel the words in the same place that twists when I see something painful and true. I'm also really into all the fishing details and narration, weirdly.
