See, the thing is that when you hear a Japanese person say an English word the way it's written in katakana you think that they are bad at English, but you are so wrong. They are actually speaking Japanese there. サンキュー is Japanese, not English

Statistically speaking they are likely also not very good at English (combination of factors such as bad language education system and enormous access to Japanese-language media), but that's a different thing. The person in question could be fluent for all you know. Because that phrase is Japanese

Still feeling like hot garbage (ate some raw spring onions I had left over from soup because body craves the vitamins) so I'm doing nothing interesting at all, so I started watching Vtuber clips and like, there is this one Hololive Minecraft event where Okayu puts a leash on Vivi and calls her a good girl and Vivi plays along but also complains (ノリツッコミ Osaka style) but it's like, I can hear her have some kind of feelings about being treated like a puppy and I have some kind of feelings about that

Was talking about video games with my brother and he was all "Sting makes such weird games" and then had like a breakdown where he tried to explain the mechanics of Yggdra Union to me and how there's hundreds of hidden items with hidden mechanics and half of them only have a niche use that is still purely negative and,

and he mentioned Sting also made Dungeon Travelers, which is a game I find incredibly frustrating because it's a ToHeart spinoff and supposedly one of the best DRPGs but it's the most "main character is a boring guy surrounded by dozens of cute girls who deserve better and there's terrible sequences where girls have sexy accidents" and it's so painfully het and the big bad censorship (cover boobs a bit more) doesn't help at all because it doesn't address the actual problem which is that you cover a demon girl you just fought in a cool boss fight with slime so she can be sexy and weak for the benefit of gross and boring men and,

and, this is my Sting-related breakdown

This is why Monster Monpiece is actually great, the protagonist is just a very nice girl and she gets to feel up monster girls for reasons

Wild to watch someone play FF7 in 2026 and have the full emotional reaction to the Big Scene as if hadn't impacted pop culture at all and also suddenly get crushed by all the implications of Sephiroth references in more recent games

I also have some feelings about the pacing of a game that scale (it's not great and games got even worse about it) and about pre-rendered backgrounds (something very charming about running around in an image instead of an actual 3d world)

Really not a fan of how my temporarily weird brain chemistry leads to nausea if i move my eyes too much, considering how there really is not a whole lot you can do that doesn't require extra eye movement

You know what the problem is with English translations? That anime girl sounds like a white yankee appropriating AAVE now instead of talking in GenZ anime otaku slang with a pinch of local dialect

The US should simply not be allowed

I do have to say it's not just that I hate the US (though I do) because the same problem exists in German where I find all translations of Japanese media unbearable because everyone sounds like Germans now

It's almost like it is inherently political which variety of a language you consider "authentic"

But I'm also really coming around to making it obvious that a translation is a translation and not the original form of the text. No, she didn't actually use this jargon, she said a thing that just makes the most sense to translate as that jargon to convey the meaning, but you are reading between phantom lines

Ugh, sorry, but this has kicked something loose in my head

I watched a Vtuber clip of Himemori Luna where she asks if it's possible to read the Minecraft server's backend data to see what she was doing, and the comments were all "wow, you can tell she had programming experience because she used jargon". But she didn't. She used a word that means something like "internal" and it just made a lot of sense to translate it as backend. But she did not actually say backend because she wasn't speaking English there. Sure, you can read into how her first thought wasn't "I'm streaming everything I do" but "you might be able to see from the data what I did", but you cannot read into her using a word she did not use because she was speaking a different language and a translation doesn't actually show you the platonic ideal of the meaning she was trying to communicate

Anyway. I can buy a translation of Dostoevsky and it will assume I know enough about 19th century Russia to make sense of like, the occasional Russian term for, I dunno, specific furniture. And yet 21st century Japan is apparently so out there that you cannot have "senpai" in a text without people accusing you of going all "keikaku means plan"
