The Process:

We initially went through  series of ideation and few of us came up with some ideas for the theme of ‘transition itself.

We ventured into the transition of life, Cultures, time and so on. In the process, food being my favourite topic, thought transition of fish being cooked might be interesting. The theme being ‘transition’ there might be a scope to add a lot of transitions. Being a vegetarian, verified and ratifies the idea with the team and we decided we could be able to abstractly depict the entire process.

We began story boarding on Miro  and assigned roles and what part of the script they should work on along with the time duration.

My Role:

Conceptualisation;

Dancing :P, and the part of the scaling of the fish.

Coordination for the colour scheme across the video.

The idea was to start with happy fish together(grey)- generic fish color.. which is abrupty ruined by a fish that gets pulled away, the fish stuck in the net tries to free itself,but dies in the end.

We then move to the scaling of the fish, a black cloth draped person gets skinned, to reveal the tender-pale pink interior.

The fish is now ready to be cooked, the fish is marinated well before it is fried. 

The deep yellow with the foam indicates its getting fried. The fried fish -darker yellow is garnished and made ready to be served.

We wanted to keep the red dupatta in the initial few shots, till the fish is cleaned.

Execution: We all had our dance bits choreographed by Aayushi which we then followed by the beat sent in by Dhruv

Created nails from aluminium foil to represent sharpness for the scaling part This was to indicate the brush to scale a fish.The silver foil was intended to add an element of sharpness to the visual.The motion of the hands mimics the way the brush moves during the process.

 My mother helped me paste it together and while my father shot the video.

Infinite, Tried to capture the composition by the neon arcs and teal paths leading into a void. Primarily used only triangles and circles owing to their dynamism and overlapped them to create this composition. The small line inside the circle in the centre represents the beginning of the next and so on. I tried various color combinations,the green one seemed to resonate more as sour than infinite; with feedback from my peers, created this composition. The Explorations

The process

Shallow, wanted to represent that the balls from the top hit the top of the surface and fly. The shapes- circle and triangles were chosen because of their nature to display dynamism. The blue colour is dominating in the composition as I wanted that element to be in focus. Have varied the shades of blue so as to represent the depth( in this case, lesser).

My Process:

I picked 2 words I wanted to work on- INFINITE and SHALLOW

I chose Triangles and Circles as they have an innate dynamism.

Initial Explorations were with a few cut outs just to put the shapes together if I could find any composition interesting.

I realised this was relatively time consuming so i switched to Digital medium to come up with my initial composition.

I picked the the colours after deciding on the composition

What we call Vankai Pachchadi( very loosely translated- brinjal chutney, it's an Andhra Dish) Process involves burning the brinjal on a flame, skinning it and adding green chilli, tamarind and coriander mixture to it. I tried to represent that in my composition- There's a smokey taste along with a hidden spice but it visually looks mild.   The subtle burnt paper and the hidden spice is don by playing around with the folds.  Unfortunately, the milky taste of the brinjal ended up looking minty.

Tempest by Low had this grainy and smokey texture that I wanted to represent for the mustard seasoning and seeds of the brinjal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75GEvrVyqIA

This was my representation for Pani Puri, the fact that the vendor tries to serve so many people at a time that sometimes the puris break and it end up on your feet. The pani on your feet while eating your favourite pani puri; The stickiness is annoying but it is dominated by the excitement.

One of the ideas was to overlay shapes on our faces and try A Capella composition. It seemed too ambitious for the time we had,but the idea was to create a harmony and represent the visual of hues/shades and tints. When 2 colors create music, the resulting 3rd color creates a new tune...

The Idea -

The main idea behind the video was to show how our day looks like but with a different set of colors. Our video shows a smooth transition from morning to afternoon and then to night. Correspondingly, our video transitions from a white background to yellow elements to blue elements and then finally to the dark background. It's amazing and almost a new experience to imagine each of our activities in a new color.

The music also accompanies our idea very well with different melodies having a distinct pace signifying our mood at different phases of our day. The rhythmic melody tells us that the activities are routine and repeat themselves after a day.

The Process

The process of making this video kickstarted with recollecting all that we learned during the color module - color wheels, color interaction, color harmony, lights, and pigments, etc. We quickly started doing ideation after that.

There were quite a few good ideas including representing the human lifecycle, a love story showing the depicting the color harmony, the concept of getting out of the comfort zone but we finally decided upon depicting our daily routine through this opportunity. Simultaneously, we were also thinking about the medium to represent our ideas. Because of ease of collaboration, easy integration, and limited time we decided to go with creating digital frames to make an animation video.

After deciding upon the basic idea we developed it further. We detailed out our plan and the timeline and divided the work into ourselves.

My role:

Helped in establishing the narrative and creating a few visuals like fry; 9pm news and switching off the lights. Integrated the last part of the video- evening to night.

How the mind simplifies the complexity that the eyes see.

Similarity: the size of the circles and their placement( coffee and the gas burner), makes them look like a group, making it easy to differentiate from each other.With respect to the salt cookies( I baked :P) there is also continuity along with similarity.

Closure: the mind tries to complete visuals with previous knowledge of the objects. The thinking man, a wooden souvenier from Senegal, has an incomplete  yet a complete form. 

Figure and Ground: I often see this a lot, probably because of my sketching style of cartooning. I tend to see faces in almost everything.In this coconut shell, I see a rodent's faces. In general, most vehicles seem like they have an expression..

Continuity: there is a movement attached to the visual that directs the eyes. The snakeplant has lines that point upwards and eventually converge.With the grains being cleaned, there is  a swirl movement.. 

UNFINISHED

During the first week, when the term Colour interaction was being repeated, there was a story line that got built. I thought what would happen if “colours interacted”

I tried making a stop motion movie.( Not officially part of the assignment) Could not find time to add the music. But here’s the video. I used pigments to create the secondary colours and also spent time understanding light interaction with coloured lights BTS:

Association with colour, The orange leaf reminds me of the onset of autumn where the first few leaves start changing colour.

Heart, the leaf and the parts of the leaf look like blood vessels because of the cylindrical vienules that have a blood red like color.

Midas touch, taking me back to the story of King Midas, whose touch turned things to gold.

Neo flora, the blue feels unrealistic, almost futuristic and invokes a feeling- if we come to a time where we are forced to recreate/engineer life.

Details, there is a discomfort while looking at the dark leaf, it looks strange and reminds me of the opening credits of a horror movie

Darkroom, the red background and the way it makes the leaf look, seems similar to developing a photograph under the red light.

My observation, the brighter/light colours looked brighter in natural light and the darker shades looked brighter in the fluorescent light. PS: I placed the tripod in a place where I could capture the wall(for the transitions in the sunlight); Did not try to get the perfect pictures as I realised it was a color assignment and not a selfie assignment :P
