What steps did you take to get prominent and known? Did models start asking for you to shoot? how did you get people to see your work? & me and my girlfriend are respectively beginners at photography & modeling. Also any tips for her as a model like the girls who model for you?
Okay, this is gonna be a long answer.
My journey was a little different than other photographers. I originally went to school for graphic design, one of the requirements was photo 101 class (a basic photography class). At the time I thought it was cool, but i didnât think anything of it. That was probably my first shoot with âmodelsâ (aka friends who liked getting their picture taken). This was in 2009. At the time, i didnât even own a camera, i had to borrow one.Â
As time went on, i found myself borrowing anyone who didnât use their camera. Eventually i bought my own and started a music blog with a friend. So i started to shoot concerts, and I feel like thats where I learned the most. Even though I was shooting for free, I was learning a lot through youtube videos, research, and just GOING out there blindly without any prior knowledge other than the class I took.Â
Eventually I bought my own camera, and invested in lenses and I started to shoot more and more. Met more and more people and met a girl named dreekylie , sheâs the main person who kind of pushed me into shooting people, this was in Feb 2014. Since then I started to shoot almost everyday. So in short these are the steps most photographers take when shooting models:
Shooting friends or family for fun.
Shooting friends who look like models.
and finally shooting actual models.
Prepare yourself to shoot for free, work really really hard, edit photos late at night, and research research research research all day everyday. As far as getting people to see my work, I just made sure to at least post 1 dope photo everyday on instagram, and I knew eventually the people (and the work) would come. Iâm still not where I want to be but, Iâm working hard everyday, and sometimes I completely forget about this blog lol.
As far as your girlfriend goes, iâd say to her to start an inspiration blog and just reblog photos she likes. Follow other models and learn poses from them, shoot as much as you can. Practice makes perfect, same goes to you.
shot by me
