Origin:
1969 - 1990
Neither of Roman’s parents ever cared to teach their son their native languages or cultures. As a child, Roman was quickly labelled as a “problem child”. He would have violent outbursts, always get into trouble, and genuinely just be very poorly behaved. In response, his parents sent him on regular visits to Arkham Asylum for various types of treatment. But they specifically requested he never be diagnosed, as that information would taint the family name, if possibly leaked to the public. One time, Roman followed a raccoon into the forest, it attacked him and he was hospitalised for weeks afterwards. The attack caused him to have a giant scar on his right cheek, and he lost his right upper canine tooth. Of course his parents forced him to cover it up with makeup and wear a prosthetic tooth. Couldn’t risk anyone thinking their heir was a degenerate.
Reputation and status was everything to Roman’s parents. Which is why they grew to resent him, as he was constantly a threat to their respectable reputation. Roman knew that nothing ever mattered to his parents beyond the surface. If he would get into fights, it’d get covered up. If he got kicked out of schools, they’d pay his way back in. Not that they ever did any of this for his sake, they made sure he was aware of this. Roman knew this and used it to his advantage, always trying to push the limits.
When he was 17 years old, Ratko decided to move Circe Sionis (Ratko’s niece from Serbia) into their manor. She got a job at Janus Cosmetics as a model, and while only knowing Serbian, quickly acclimated. Roman saw how his parents adored her, for her good grades, looks, behaviour and the fact that she knew Serbian. He resented Circe, because he knew she was the child his parents wish they had. As a result, he would frequently torment her. Always bullying her, and trying to make her life more difficult in whatever way he could.
1990 - onward.
When Roman was 21, this eventually got to her, and in an attempt to get him off her back, she outed him as gay to Ratko and Cornelia (based on rumours she had heard around town.) They obviously didn’t take this information well, and sent him straight back to Arkham Asylum. The doctors started preparing to give him a lobotomy, as requested by his parents.
This was the breaking point for Roman. He managed to escape the asylum, and set his way back to the manor. In order to get his revenge, he took Ratko, Cornelia and Circe captive in the manor. To mimic his treatment at the asylum, he shoved a power drill into the heads of his parents. Wanting to rid Circe of what he deemed to be her only “valuable trait”, he forcefully strapped a mask onto her face and poured acetone into it. He then left her to die with the bodies of his parents, before setting the house on fire.
While not having any stable evidence to convict him, the GCPD heavily suspected Roman as guilty of his family’s murder. But in court, Roman also discovered that his parents hadn’t left him anything in their will, and they had put Circe as heir of the company. On top of that, it also turns out that his father’s business wasn’t as clean as he had originally thought, and a lot of people now wanted him dead.
He was kidnapped by Oswald Cobblepot, who thought Roman had some information about his father’s fortune. Penguin’s goons, Eduardo Flamingo and Victor Zsasz, had been assigned the task of torturing the information out of him. But before they could get as far, they were interrupted by Carmine Falcone. Falcone claimed to have been close with Roman’s mother, and paid Oswald to let him go.
Oswald agreed, and Roman went with Falcone. While having probably spared his life, he was instantly in debt to Falcone, and needed to work for him. As time passes, Roman is becoming increasingly agitated at having to work for Falcone. He wants to do his own thing, but doesn’t have the money or status to do so.
The opportunity arises when Falcone wants him to lead a big bank heist, in order to prove and solidify his place in the gang.
But during the heist, Roman and his team were ambushed by Penguin’s gang (Eduardo & Victor). Everyone except for Roman was killed, and he was once again cornered. But this time he noticed Eduardo and Zsasz starting to argue, he couldn’t make out what it was about though. The argument escalated and resulted in Zsasz knocking out Flamingo. Roman remembers that he still has the money from before the ambush. Knowing they’re both in deep shit and can’t go back to their designated gangs, he offers to split the money. This is partly an attempt to bribe Zsasz out of killing him. It works and he takes the offer.
