Guru Indu Mitha is Bharatnatyam dancer based in Pakistan. She was trained in Bharatanatyam — a form of classical dance that takes its roots from the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu and later in the Uday Shankar style of modern dance at the Zoresh Institute Lahore before partition.
“In the 1960s dancing in Pakistan was akin to ‘idiocy’ but with two young daughters, Mitha found a way to keep dancing, teaching and performing (full time).”
Currently in her 80’s Indu jee continues her activism by teaching dance and organizing theatre performances. She has kept dance effectively alive in a society that is not at ease with art- especially performance art.
