Okay. So I kind of abandoned this tumblr project because honestly, just a little bit after I started it, MTRCB permits genuinely became a little less silly. At the very least, they weren’t the kind of trainwrecks that were really worth posting about. And then what happened was we got a whole new government, with a whole new set of MTRCB reviewers. And that brought on a whole new kind of shit that MTRCB permits say.
Take this one, which claims that Once Upon a Time in Venice is “case-sensitive.” That is not what that means, brother.
But that’s just the regular kind of MTRCB silliness. What’s genuinely appalling is that the MTRCB is participating in the perpetuation of the narrative of the “prevalent” drug problem in the Philippines. Disguised as consumer guidance, the MTRCB here has become another arm of the government propaganda machine.
This may seem like a small thing, but if the MTRCB continues to act as a political body, we need to worry about the kind of ratings they might give to films that go against the accepted government narrative. In the best of times, the MTRCB is a mere annoyance. In the worst of times, it is an active censor of any sort of political dissent. That is shit in the highest order.
