Shit Anti-Choicers Say

I will start the ambitious task of compiling a list of resources, documentaries, websites, organizations, etc. on reproductive rights.

Anti-lifer, how original.

I’m pro-choice. Which means you get to choose what happens with your body. This is her choice and that’s fine. But her last three sentences? Holy fucking shit. Mommier-than-thou.

You can choose what you do. You should not shame those who chose differently. There’s no gold medal for either choice!

Well I did have to answer this last one.

I’m pro-choice because it’s none of my business what a person does with their body. If they do not want to carry a pregnancy to term, that is their right. If they want to carry a pregnancy to term, that’s their right.

A fetus is not a person, unless of course you live in a country where their constitution defines a fetus as a person (groan). Those kind of laws lead to women being imprisoned if it is even suspected that they had an abortion. Many people will not head to the hospital if they have had miscarriages for fear of being imprisoned. It leads to physicians going against best medical practices when a person needs a termination. And of course, we have seen throughout history that total bans on abortion lead to people resorting to dangerous and often lethal methods in order to obtain one. And if a child was unwanted, they could be sent to a “baby farm” where the infant was often killed rather than raised to maturity. Or back in the 1950s and 1960s where young unwed mothers were forced to give up their infants for adoption because they were not worthy enough to raise a child. If we want to delve further back into history, there were people who were not even taught what sex was and that sex could lead to a pregnancy.

I’ve been neglecting this Tumblr. It didn’t take up much of my “real life”, true. Not going to deny that. But I can’t do this for long periods of time anymore. It’s draining.

But staff at the Mercy Health Partners hospital in Muskegon, Michigan would not induce labor for another 10 hours. Instead, they followed a set of directives written by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops that forbid terminating a pregnancy unless the mother is in grave condition. Doctors decided they would delay until the woman showed signs of sepsis – a life-threatening response to an advanced infection – or the fetal heart stopped on its own.
