The Leaves Are Changing Color ‘Cause They’re Dying, You Monsters

I wrote this because in Year 12 the context we’re studying is ‘Whose Reality’ with the text ‘The Lot’ by Michael Leunig

Something just happened and it was too gold not to write down.

Half an hour ago my boyfriend and my mum were freaking out about something, so I walked into the kitchen to investigate. It turned out that they were upset about who The Bachelor Sam chose to go home. Now I don’t watch the show at all (it creeps me out plus I’m in year 12 and therefore not allowed to be engaged in popular culture) but I did recognise the lady being sent home, her name is Heather.

The reason I recognised her was because she is a hired actress for the show and I saw an article about it pop up on my twitter timeline. When I forwarded the article to my mum who was sitting in the kitchen, I heard some hysterical laughing followed by some shrieking, “Ekky! Ekky come down! Did Gemma send you that article? Heather’s a paid actress”. I then got to enjoy seeing my boyfriend’s face turn from confusion to disgust and anger when I played him the clip of Heather in a cereal commercial. I thought her performance was pretty good.

What shocked me was how gullible these two people in my life were. They were so wrapped up in Heather’s story that they did not consider that it could all be a facade. They were rooting for her, like so many other Australians. Extar was so upset that he punched my bedroom door on the way out.

“I knew I recognised her from somewhere”, he claimed.

So bam. Whose reality. Dignity and Balance. All that jazz. The media is a lie. I wonder if there’s product placement in the Bachelor, then I can talk about ‘the dictator’.

Update: My boyfriend just made a facebook status about it. It contained a lot of swearing directed towards Heather. People are commenting on it, this must be his most popular status update ever. Maybe I can write about how Leunig hates people looking at their phones all the time lol. Get outside and look at nature you banana.

Update: Someone just commented on it ‘Whose reality bullshit right here’ but I’m pretty sure they did year 12 last year and it was my idea first!
