The latest “Aquanort” reveal exemplifies how badly written this whole thing is. 0.2 BBS: A Fragmentary Passage was unappealingly bleak, full of pretentious dialogue, hamfistedly retconned something that was best left alone (the ending of the original KH), and didn’t have Aqua make any progress in terms of plot, since she ends up exactly where she started: trapped in the Realm of Darkness. But at least it finally gave her a character arc: it let her, an uptight hero, deal with the knowledge that she’d fucked up: she’d failed to save her friends and had even put the universe at risk by saving Terranort, and her struggle with depression and self-loathing only to find the light inside once more and give herself a new purpose within the Realm of Darkness was inspiring. And KH3 has rendered that arc entirely pointless. 

Aqua isn’t “the light within the darkness” when she’s found in KH3 - she’s succumbed to darkness and become a vessel of Xehanort. She’s fucked up again, and basically justified all that self-loathing from before. She won’t be one of the 7 Lights, she’ll be one of the 13 Darknesses. So that whole story with her in the Realm of Darkness has basically been rendered the equivalent of the notorious Batgirl-focused first act of the Batman: The Killing Joke movie: it stars her, and then she gets fridged in the main story and has no effect on it. And once again, it’s a case of Nomura treating the female characters of KH like crap, just like he has with Kairi via underutilization and Namine via Flanderization. It’s amazing that in a game with such strong Disney women like Rapunzel and Elsa, Nomura’s girls are so weak.
