ShinRanWeek2026 Day 7– Birthday
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHINICHI!” sang out the group in the Kudo mansion. Shinichi jumps at the surprise. Ran hugs him and kisses him on the cheek. They just came in from a date. Shinichi thought that was his birthday gift, but it was a ruse for the surprise party!
“Wow you guys, you didn’t have to!” he exclaims.
“Afta’ all ya’ been throu’ Kudo, ya deserve it!” Heiji comes over gives Shinichi a big hug and noogie. “Ya’ didn’t expect ah thing while on ya’ date wit’ nee-chan? Guess ya detective skills ar’ slippin’”
“Heiji, don’t ruin da’ moment!” scolds Kazuha. Heiji and Kazuha start arguing, letting Shinichi and Ran slip away.
“I won’t lie Ran, I didn’t suspect a thing.”
“I’m glad Shinichi. I’ve been planning this with everyone. I’m glad it all worked out!” Ran beams, and Shinichi’s heart melts as always at the smile he fell in love with.
“Happy Birthday Shin-Chan!” Yukkiko come over and starts peppering her son with kisses.
“Ugh- ack- thanks- oof- Mom!”
“Darling that’s enough,” says Yusaku, “don’t smother the boy, he still has to open his presents.” Ran continues pulling Shinichi to the present pile.
“Our whole class actually got you a gift since it’s your first birthday back!”
“Amazingly, our classmates do have affection for our resident mystery-geek,” teases Sonoko, “don’t worry I also got you my own gift. Hopefully you’re worthy of it.”
“…love you too Sonoko.” Shinichi (and Ran too) rolls his eyes. “You’re the sister I’ve never wanted.” Ran lightly chuckles while Sonoko feigns disgust at being unwanted. Even Makoto cracked the tiniest of smiles.
“Why Shinichi, I’m hurt, I thought I was the sister you never wanted,” Shiho sly comments. “Hmm, maybe I should take my gift back.”
“Honestly Shiho, you should, he doesn’t deserve our charity.” Sonoko and Shiho start smugly giggling.
“I regret those two ever meeting, if only Shiho stayed shrunk.”
“I heard that,” said Shiho, “I could shrink you again.”
“Yeah Ai-chan, that’s not nice!”
“Ayumi, she’s Shiho-chan now,” said Mitsuhiko.
“Yeah, didn’t you forget she’s super grown up now, like Shinichi-kun,” says Genta.
“I know, but she’ll always be Ai-chan to me. Always a member of the Junior Detective League!” Shiho’s expression softens at Ayumi’s genuine affection. Shinichi could swear there’s tears forming in the corner of her eyes.
“They’re such good kids,” says Shinichi.
“They really are, I had them on decoration duty,” says Ran.
“Oh man, I wish I had my own group of apprentices. My masterful skills need to be passed on to a new generation. Alas, I’ve yet to found those worthy of my education,” Kaito dramtically laments.
“Kaito should stop being dramatic; stop ruining your cousin’s birthday,” scolds Aoko.
“I’m not ruining anything, if anything I’m adding to it. Without me this party would be a drag. He’ll probably start reading Holmes aloud to the party, especially with-“
“I don’t think that’s a bad idea,” says Saguru cutting Kaito off, “reading Shakespeare out loud is virtuous, I feel reading aloud Sherlock Holmes would be equivalent. I’ll be happy to help with that Shinichi!”
“’Ey, dere’s only room fo’ one detective bes’ friend, an’ dat’s me!” Heiji defiantly states. Saguru cocks a brow at Heiji’s attempt to intimidate, which only pisses Heiji off more.
“Boys don’t start fighting, today’s not about you,” Masumi steps in-between to diffuse the situation.
“I can cast an inhibiting spell on you Heiji, that could protect dear Saguru-san,” Akako chillingly suggest with a smile. Heiji, Kazuha, and Kaito recoil in horror. Shinichi and Ran just quietly chuckle nervously.
“We certainly have a unique group of friends, don’t we Shinichi,” Ran asks.
“Yeah, and you know what, I wouldn’t trade them for everything. I will say this everyone. I’m glad you’re all here, and that you’re all part of my life. I’d honestly never thought I would get to have a genuine happy birthday.”
“C’mon ya’ brat, don’t get sentimental on us now,” says Kogoro.
“Dad! He means it; don’t ruin it!”
“What I think he means to say, he and the rest of us don’t want to start crying,” reassures Dr. Agasa. “Come now everyone, this is a joyous occasion. Shinichi, let’s start with your presents before we get to the cake!” And what presents they were. Dr. Agasa’s new utility belt disguised as a regular belt. Saguru with Shinichi’s father give a first edition collection Sherlock Holmes stories; from the original Strand magazines. Akako gives a demon defense kit, causing Heiji and Kazuha to jump in out of order to give their good luck charms and blessings papers to Shinichi. (‘Jus’ incase’ the Osakans the emphasis). Kaito gives a mini escape kit. (“And no, I don’t use this same set, so you can’t reverse engineer it to stop me on the job” Kaito teases). Masumi passes on gifts her family and her brother. Yukkiko hands over family gifts, and gifts from the police department and other governmental bodies. The JDL and Shiho give Shinichi a hand made and signed sign for Shinichi’s desk saying “Best Friend in Solving Crime”. Some party guests swear Shinichi teared up.
“Thank you all again,” he says, “I feel I don’t deserve all of this.”
“Yes you do,” Ran assures, “never forget that.”
“Yeah Kudo, we’re all ‘appy you’re a part of our lives,” says Heiji.
“We love you Shinichi,” says the JDL.
“Thank you all!” Shinichi leans down to the kids. “You guys want some cake?”
“Yes!” On cue Makoto comes from the Kitchen carrying a large triple layer cake.
“Now everyone, just a heads up,” Ran says as she gets a knife, “we went with American portions, and it’s three layer. Don’t get stomach aches.”
“What are you looking at me for?” Kogoro asks.
“…I wasn’t? I was looking at the kids and Kaito.”
“Aoko told me you have quite the sweet tooth.”
“For ice cream, not necessarily-“
“Aoko thinks Kaito knows you mean well, and Aoko will make sure he doesn’t get sick.”
“Well, sometimes you act like it Kaito, sometimes even more that Shinichi’s friends.” That gets the kids and teens laughing.
“Yeah Kaito, you could learn something from them!” Shinichi teases. Kaito is gobsmacked. “Come on guys, no hard feelings, lets’ eat!” Shinichi takes the first slice from Ran. “Oh, it’s lemon filling! Thank you Ran!” he hugs her.
“You’re welcome Shinichi. Who wants some?” The kids line up, and sheepishly Kaito lines up behind them, followed by Aoko and the rest. Soon everyone is milling about conversating with their cakes. Kaito is enjoying his with Aoko, but is formulating a plan to get back at his cousin for the teasing. He finishes his cake and gets up from his seat.
“Hold my fork Aoko.” Aoko takes the fork and Kaito gets another piece of cake, in what looks like he’s it getting for Shinichi. As he makes his way over to Shinichi and Ran talking with Sonoko and Makoto, he puts his plan into motion.
“Hey Shinichi, do you want another slice- OOP,” and Kaito ‘trips’ and the cake lands right into Shinichi’s face. The party goes silent. “Sorry cuz. Accidents happe-“ Kaito stops midsentence when he sees the death glare from Ran.
“You. Did. That. On. Purpose.” Ran grits.
“I’m- I’m- I’m sorry.” Kaito stammers.
“It’s ok Ran,” Shinichi cleans a bit of his face, “it’s my party and I say it’s ok. And especially ok for me to repay.”
“Huh?” Before Kaito can process, Shinichi took his remaining cake and plants it squarely into Kaito’s face. Aoko laughs on the couch. Ran starts giggling, followed by Sonoko, then Shinichi, Kaito and the whole party bursts out laughing. A nice birthday indeed.
That evening, most of the guests went home, and those staying the night have gone to bed. Shinichi’s changes into his pajamas, and Ran’s in her matching pair. As he comes from the bathroom, he closes his bedroom door and joins Ran in bed. She’s sitting up reading a magazine waiting for Shinichi. He leans in and wraps his arms around her.
“Thanks for the party. I loved it.” He kisses Ran’s cheek. She puts the magazine down and returns his hug and kiss.
“I’m glad you had a good time, and that it didn’t devolve into a food fight or any fight.” Shinichi chuckles.
“I’m also glad I didn’t get called away to solve a murder.” Both share a light laugh.
“One more thing Shinichi,” Ran reaches over to the nightstand and pulls out a small box. “I did get you my own gift.”
“You making the party possible is enough Ran.”
“I wanted to get you this, had it especially made.” Shinichi takes the box and opens it. It’s a silver necklace with a spade surround by an outline of a heart. “I have a matching one.” Ran pulls her own out to show.
“I always will.” They kiss. And kiss. And kiss. And take a break breathing, when Shinichi does a double take, looking at… you?!
“Thanks everyone for reading our stories and enjoying art of us this week.”
“Yeah, we’re glad so many of you support us,” Ran says.
“Now if you don’t mind, it is still my birthday…” Shinichi looks at Ran with a come on grin. Ran returns it. She turns off the light. And let us leave the lovebirds to they can enjoy the night. I hope you all had a great ShinrRanWeek!
