Profile: Bousen Fukuda
Born in 1949 in Mishima City, Shizuoka Prefecture.
At age eight, she developed valvular heart disease due to side effects from medication for rheumatic fever.
Told she “would not live past twenty,”
the young girl chose a life walked together with calligraphy.
Since 2014, as a member of the Mishima City Food Education Promotion Committee,
she has organized the National Life and Food Education Calligraphy Exhibition,
advancing food education and calligraphy with the support of national ministries including:
the Cabinet Office, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology,
Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.
2018 – World’s first calligraphy performance on snow
2020 – World’s first online calligraphy exhibition
Her challenges have always begun not with
“Can I do it?”
but with
“Will I do it?”
Her journey has been featured by numerous media outlets,
including Shizuoka Shimbun and NHK.
A pioneer who opened a new “path” in the world of calligraphy,
she continues to share her teachings across Japan and abroad,
pursuing new challenges to this day.
