the mind is a blackboard

               he  doesn’t  understand  how  much  he’s  missed  out  on,  doesn’t  realize  just  how  wide  the  world  really  is.  his  entire  world  was  within  these  walls,  buried  deep  underground,  not  at  all  known  by  the  outside  world.  they  were  as  oblivious  to  him  as  he  was  to  them,  as  if  it  was  an  entirely  different  planet.  they  have  no  idea  just  how  lucky  they  are,  and  he  has  no  idea  just  how  poorly  he’s  being  treated.

he  doesn’t  understand  what  he’s  seeing,  struggles  to  process  it.  all  the  colors,  the  softness  under  his  feet,  the  vastness  of  the  sky  above  them.  wide  eyes  look  around  constantly,  trying  to  decipher  what  he  sees.  it’s  all  so  new,  so  different.  he  sees  the  word,  but  that  doesn’t  really  help  him,  doesn’t  have  a  clue  what  it  says.

           he’s  a  little  nervous  about  town,  nervous  about  people  and  noises  and  getting  overwhelmed,  but  he’s  excited  too.  excited  to  get  out  of  the  house,  excited  to  see  new  things.  it’d  get  him  that  one  step  closer  to  being  normal,  one  step  closer  to  being  the  kind  of  person  he  wants  to  be.  the  excitement  is  obvious  in  the  way  he’s  quick  to  get  his  coat,  wraps  himself  in  it  so  quickly  -  though  he  doesn’t  do  up  the  zip,  will  leave  that  to  danny.  it’s  still  the  slightest  bit  too  intricate  for  him,  still  a  work  in  progress.  his  shoes,  however,  he  can  do  -  and  he’s  always  excited  to  prove  it.  velcro  may  not  be  the  most  fashionable  thing  in  the  world,  but  it  means  he  can  do  his  shoes  up  himself,  something  that  always  brings  up  some  pride.

           there’s  no  doubt  in  dan’s  mind  that  the  world  wasn’t  jason’s  for  the  taking.  he  could  do  anything  he  wanted,  if  he  just  set  his  sights  on  it.  and  there’s  something in  seeing  the  younger  boy,  eagerly  getting  ready  for  the  day  out.  an  excitement  he knows  is  layered  with  fear,  worry.  but  every  chance  for  those  fears  to  be  laid  false,  was  something  dan  yearned  for.  gathering  his  own  jacket,  he  buttons  it  against  the  slight  chill  of  the  day,  but  it  was  nice  out  despite  the  causal  gust  of  winter.  

   𝙷𝙸𝚂 𝚆𝙾𝚁𝙳𝚂 𝚂𝙾𝙾𝚃𝙷𝙴 𝙷𝙴𝚁,  but only by a small fraction     ;     ever does she struggle to see unwarranted acts of care as more than something artificial,  𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐝.  and yet,  he had helped her,  in a way she can’t comprehend     ——–     in a way that simply doesn’t compute in her mind,  𝚑𝚎𝚛 𝚖𝚎𝚖𝚘𝚛𝚢 𝚘𝚏 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚗𝚝 𝚊𝚗 𝚒𝚗𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚙𝚕𝚎𝚝𝚎 𝚟𝚒𝚜𝚒𝚘𝚗 𝚘𝚏 𝚍𝚎𝚕𝚒𝚛𝚒𝚞𝚖.❝     a lot of questions…  try a million.❞     her exhaustion is evident,  𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐫𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐬𝐭.  brows furl upon her forehead,  and she studies him,  attempting to fill in the blanks of an incomplete,  𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐲 𝐩𝐢𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞.❝     …  you helped me.  thank you.❞      her words are tempered by an iron-willed sincerity     ;     this sincerity is echoed in an intense gaze.     ❝     …  but i don’t…  i don’t think i feel safe.❞     naught too remarkable     ;     𝚜𝚊𝚏𝚎 𝚒𝚜 𝚊 𝚏𝚘𝚛𝚎𝚒𝚐𝚗 𝚕𝚊𝚗𝚍𝚖𝚊𝚛𝚔 𝚜𝚑𝚎 𝚑𝚊𝚜𝚗’𝚝 𝚠𝚒𝚝𝚗𝚎𝚜𝚜𝚎𝚍 𝚒𝚗 𝚕𝚘𝚗𝚐𝚎𝚛 𝚝𝚑𝚊𝚗 𝚜𝚑𝚎 𝚔𝚗𝚘𝚠𝚜.

it  does  not  require  much  for  you  to  take  someone  under  your  wing.  you  have  a  knack  for  seeing  the  best  in  others  and  rooting  for  them,  and  they  look  up  to  you  in  turn.  they  feel  that  you  are  safe  to  go  to  in  times  of  chaos  or  strife,  and  are  calmed  by  your  presence.  you  take  extra  measures  to  make  sure  everyone  feels  supported.  things  that  others  might  not  even  consider,  you  have  already  likely  accounted  for.  in  most  scenario,  you  are  “ the  leader. ”  your  struggles  tend  to  come  from  your  desire  to  provide  things  to  others.  you  want  to  give,  to  see  those  you  love  happy.  to  make  wherever  you  are  a  place  of  comfort.  your  failures  hit  you  hard  because  you  see  this  as  your  responsibility,  and  you  hate  to  let  people  down.  okay,  yes,  there’s  no  avoiding  it  :  this  is  the  parent  friend.

           nerves  are  palpable,  the  entire  situation  being  one  he’s  not  good  at  dealing  with.  he  remains  as  steady  as  possible,  but  breathing  is  shaky  and  his  hands  have  the  slightest  tremor.  as  the  scissors  come  nearer  he  squeezes  his  eyes  shut,  though  that’d  prove  to  not  be  the  best  idea.  his  mind  runs  with  his  fear,  pushes  the  thoughts  into  his  head  of  THE  LAB  and  all  the  times  they’d  poked  and  prodded  at  him,  all  the  times  they’d  cut  him  open  and  sewn  him  shut  again.

the  crunch  of  scissors  slicing  through  hair  makes  him  whimper,  plenty  of  less  than  pleasant  imagery  running  through  his  head,  imagination  running  wild  with  the  glimpses  of  his  past.  he  doesn’t  even  really  register  how  much  he’d  been  relying  on  the  tension  in  his  hair  to  keep  his  hand  up,  arm  dropping  once  the  tension  is  severed.  hair  is  dropped  from  his  hand  before  both  hands  raise  to  rub  at  still  closed  eyes,  the  slightest  hint  of  tears  beginning  to  seep  through.  but  he  doesn’t  say  anything,  just  sniffles,  just  lets  his  mind  continue  to  wander.

          it’s  the  easiest  way  he  knows.  assuming  something  like  an  electric  buzzer  would  be  TOO  MUCH  for  him  seemed  to  be  the  right  call.   even  dan  himself  didn’t  like  it  --  the  vibrations,  the  voracity  of  the  noise  close  to  his  skull.  though  this  isn’t  necessary,  cutting  hair  and  all.  he  thinks  to  stop,  make  sure  he’s  alright  but  another  part  of  him  wants  to  push  him  on  this.  

“    mmhmm    .    you’ve    grown    a    bit    since    then    ,    though    .    ”    hand    reaches    forth    ,    smoothing    back    his    hair    (    less    blond    now    ,    less    baby - fine    …    oh    ,    how    quickly    children    grow    )    .    if    this    baby    has    fallen    short    of    fortune    ,    with    her    and    jack    for    parents    (    though    they’ve    slowly    begun    to    find    their    footing    ,    find    stability    )    ,    she    has    at    least    been    lucky    to    claim    daniel    torrance    as    her    brother    .    “    being    a    big    brother    is    a    big    responsibility    ,    doc    .    you    up    for    it    ?    ”

misunderstood,  perceived  unfairly  as  monstrous.  a  person  with  kindness,  with  a  penchant  for  indulging  and  caring  for  other  monsters  if  no  one  else  will.
