"Floating Between World" contextualizes the young career of Johnny Miller (b. 1962 Newcastle, UK) by placing his works in relation to woodblock prints from Japanese old master Hiroshige (b. 1797 - d. 1858 Tokyo, Japan).

Today Shin Gallery’s 322 Grand St. Space is closing its recent exhibition, “Emotional Drought.”

We are pleased to announce that Hyon Gyon's recent solo exhibition at Shin Gallery, "Emotional Drought," was recently reviewed in Hyperallergic.

"The overall message I glean from Hyon’s Emotional Drought is to suggest another way of seeing outside the specter of a universalist paranoia. Traditionally, the role of the shaman is about coming to terms with those unreflective indulgences and invisible traumas that media appear to either repress or disguise. To confront the absurd, massive pile of heads is to retrieve the sense of being human in the process of one’s work and, indeed, one’s life." - Robert Morgan

One of our dearest artists, David Raffini, is currently having a show at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris with partner Florian Pugnaire.

Their video works In Fine (2010) and Casse pipe (2010) join the Pompidou Centre's collections, where they are on show at the museum cinema on level four from April 18 to June 6 2016.

David Raffini received his DNSEP from Villa Arson in 2007 and is previously known for his monumental, deconstructive sculptures with partner Florian Pugnaire. In 2010, Raffini exhibited in the Palais de Tokyo. Raffini was awarded the Ricard Foundation Prize in 2015

Today the Shin Gallery’s 66 Orchard Project Space is closing its recent “I Wanna Be Me” installation. Recalling the infamous CBGB bathroom and featuring works from Vilhelm Hammershoi, Salvador Dali, Teresa Bruga, Balthus, and Hyon Gyon, the show sought to brought out punk elements in canonical work that may go elided in the normatively white-walled art world.

“Smile More!” is created by Betty Tompkins (b.1945) specially for the Shin Gallery’s upcoming exhibition, Smile! The work is from her series of over a thousand paintings featuring, the curator Jenny Mushkin Goldman explains, “words and phrases ranging from pejorative and salacious to humorous and tender that were submitted in staggering response to her requesting from her email list for words that describe women.”

Brooklyn-based artist Deborah Kass (b. 1952) employs the signature style of some of the most iconic male artist from 20th century—including Andy Warhol, Bruce Nauman, Ed Ruscha, Ellsworth Kelly, and Jackson Pollock— to explore the intersection of politics, popular culture, art history, and the self.

The upcoming exhibition, “Smile!” will feature C’Mon Get Happy (2010) by Kass. The work was created by Kass to support the leading national H.I.V. research-and-education organization, the ACRIA foundation.

Shin Gallery graciously requests your participation in "Smile!," a preferred exhibition that will mark the launch of our new private viewing space located in Midtown at 315 5th Avenue.

The ambition of opening this new, smaller local is to host exhibitions that concentrate on cultivating a focal idea. In this way, "Smile!" will begin our commitment to partnering with a curator in an effort to produce highly focused curatorial projects. Following the mission of Shin Gallery’s other locations, this new space seeks to reevaluate how viewers interact with the the art object by looking to cultural authorities normatively placed outside the art world.

Curated by Jenny Mushkin Goldman, "Smile!" is an all female group exhibition that presents work centered around the contemporary objectification of women.

Including Betty Tompkins, Hyon Gyon, Deborah Kass, Rebecca Goyette, Emily Noelle Lambert, and Emily Weiskopf, this select group that spans across generations, cultures, and mediums all materializes works that approach the difficulty of representing femininity across differing mediums.

The opening reception will be open to the public on Wednesday, May 4 from 7-9 PM.

Shin Gallery’s “I Wanna be Me,” brings together pioneering artists and the 70’s punk scene by use of subculture. Each of the works shown are framed within a certain defiance. Balthus’ “Adolescente Aux Cheveux Roux” (1947) with its unorthodox sexual themes, hangs on a heavily graffitied walls above urinals, in a space reminiscent of the CBGB bathroom. “I Wanna be Me” encapsulates a resilient rebellion, present in every time period throughout history and that will continue to exist, each differing immensely from one another.

Johnny Miller, originally from England and residing in Japan, evokes a feeling of melancholy through his grotesque renderings of barbaric human figures. He is able to convey the inner workings of human nature and personality with use of multiple media, his style residing somewhere between classical Japanese woodcutting, manga drawing and British illustration and caricatures of the Victorian age. His work is balanced somewhere within the realm of subconsciousness, with distinct and antic features and personalities placed in surreal settings evoking a tragic humor, lending us insight into the realms of love and loss that exist within everyone.

Shin Gallery is pleased present Kris Lemsalu’s multimedia work, which blurs the line between human and beast, incorporating found materials and ceramic objects, made by the artist. In “Father is in town,” Lemsalu utilizes lamb and wild pig fur, accompanied by sculpted ceramic dog heads, intertwined, creating a comic and sexualized narrative that is present throughout her work. Her grotesque, hybrid sculptures demonstrate the animalistic side of human nature, underscoring her repeated feminist theme. View more of Kris Lemsalu’s work on our website, www.shin-gallery.com.

In the process of creating “Harlem Gold," Hyon Gyon first created intricate, sculptural images and patterns which were then masked in an opaque coating. What remains is outlines and allusions to what was once there under a facade of abstract patches of black paint and a vast covering of gold leaf. A selection of three of this series are exhibited at “Emotional Drought” at Shin Gallery. These works are a commentary on leaving her native Korea for Japan and America, touching on the cultural divide and glorification of modern culture and ignorance towards the tragic realities that occur throughout the world daily.

The large painting, "Twice Born" (2016), depicts a nude female figure, her face painted in a grotesque manner, reflected throughout Hyon Gyon’s “Emotional Drought." About her are numerous charms and trinkets in the form of faces and pop culture icons, with crashing waves and other textures, such as feathers and silky hair, patterning the image’s background.

With this show, "Emotional Drought" Hyon Gyon hopes to enact a form of change in how our generation deals with these issues, causing us to reflect on the harshness of reality and what may be done in response. This exhibit is open to the public 10:30-6:30, Wednesday-Sunday.
