In early April I’ll be travelling to the USA for three months and as such BCH will be on indefinite hiatus, however while I’m over there I’ll be doing some blogging. A big part of the reasoning behind this trip is to meet up with folks who I’ve met through this blog over the years, check out local music scenes, and document my experience. I’ll be converting my old inspiration Tumblr Up The Line into a quasi-live music/travel blog for the duration.

Indian plant physiologist and physicist, Sir Jagadis Chandra Bose documented a lifetime of research and study into the responses plants have to a variety of environments and stimuli and found that plants are sensitive not only to light, but to cold, heat and noise. From 1962, a number of studies were undertaken by Dr T. C. Singh to specifically find the effect of music on plant growth. He found that when exposed to music, balsam plants had an accelerated growth of 20% in height and 72% in biomass. His experiments were repeated on crops in open fields with a gramophone and loudspeakers. The size of the crops grew between 25%-60% above the regional average. T.C Singh also found that if seeds exposed to music were later germinated, they would produce plants of a greater size and with more leaves than those that hadn’t been exposed.

Playing music to plants to boost growth is believed in and practiced today. DeMorgenzon wine estate in Stellenbosch, South Africa and the Paradiso di Frassinain vineyard in Tuscany, Italy, both play music to their plants to reap positive results. Not only are the vibrations in music used to boost the ripening process, but they also help to encourage beneficial fungi and bacteria in the soil, making for a better and stronger root development and overall better produce.

So what kinds of music do plants enjoy most?

Jazz

It has been found that plants exposed to jazz produce better quality and more abundant growth.

Classical

T.C Singh first experimented with classical music and gained positive results. Classical is also the preferred genre of music played to the aforementioned vineyards. Overall, T.C Singh concluded that violin is one of the most effective musical instruments for plant growth.

Barefoot Dancing

T.C Singh also experimented on the effects of vibrations caused by barefoot dancing and saw several flowering plants such as marigolds and petunias flowering two weeks earlier than plants in the control group.

Folk

While the effect of folk music on plants hasn’t been researched as extensively, it hasn’t been shown to have any negative effects on plants - unlike rock music which creates detrimental growth patterns in plants and caused marigolds to die prematurely in T.C Singh’s experiments.

Perhaps indigenous singer Gina Williams will be able to provide a more gentle, ethereal vibe for your garden. Coincidentally, “boordah” in Nyungar language translates into “seeds”.
