It's time to meet yourself again.
Women in their 40βs venture out to find themselves. What is this all about? What does this mean? I Have had a long conversation with my new found precious friend Rebecca. She voices her thoughts simply making it easy to see and identify with. I think I understand what it means and the need for it. All her life a woman is known by the relationships she builds. Boxes she fits into roles she plays. A daughter, a mom,a wife,a daughter-in-law, a homemaker, a cleaner,a cook,an organiser etc etc. Over years all these relationships diminish one by one. Doesnβt mean she looses these relationships but the others involved in these relationships move on with their lives while she is left standing in a time warp. She is no more the obedient girl she once was, sheβs moved on from being a girlfriend, her husband gets busy with work, she gets used to being a daughter-in-law, her house works like clockwork thanks to her organisational skills and finally the last straw is wen her kids move out. Itβs doesnβt stop her from loving or giving but she has nothing more to explore, teach or learn. She has nothing to give that anyone needs from her anymore. She almost becomes redundant. She doesnβt have to teach tying laces, She doesnβt have to pack innovative lunch boxes, or revisit homework. She ceases to be an enthusiastic lover writing letters and planning anniversary dinners as they go unnoticed. She looses interest in dressing up or cooking new dishes because it goes unregistered. Suddenly no one seems to need her anymore as they used to. She almost becomes a part of the furniture, the once coveted beautiful rocking chair which now gets used to pile up clothes. The void starts caving in then. All relationships start fading like blurred words in her once rich book with innumerable stories. What sheβs left with is empty pages with no sense of being wanted. Taking away her sense of belonging. Thatβs when she has no option but to start investigating new means to give herself a sense of purpose. Menial things stop filling time and space, or the vacuum she experiences. She is forced to dig deep inside her to discover passions that have taken a back seat or have been left unexplored for too long. She is left with no choice but to find and Become her own person, much beyond roles she filled, because she has no audience left anymore. And Thatβs when she is left with the mammoth task of unearthing Her own self for her survival.
A lot of firsts. My first exhibition in Spain. My first performance art. And first time of writing, voicing, performing and painting all in one. Challenging the artist in me as a whole.
"Brown girl not yet in the ring."
1. As a rule, when alone, never go to a new place/hotel/ continent/country in the evening. And definitely not to settle. Its unsettling and extremely disorienting.Everything seems brighter, lighter, friendlier, welcoming and more manageable in the day. In the evening,it's dreary, overwhelming and alien. So first move wrong. I landed at my hotel in the evening, that too on a Sunday evening when everything was shut and silent. There were barely any people on the streets. These are not even streets they are by lanes. And it's dark and cold. 2. Never take a hotel in an isolated place. Always look for a hotel in a busy area. With shops, malls, main streets restaurants etc around it. My hotel is in a very quite isolated neighbourhood with nothing but houses around. Its intimidating and it's scary. 3. Do not ever book a room without a window. I hate confined rooms. They make me terribly claustrophobic.I don't care if it's a small room as long as it has a big window or small balcony or any opening from where I can see light and feel or at least breath some air. The room I've been given is a mouse hole with a 3 beds(wonder why?) against the wall,a chest of drawers and a matchbox of a bathroom. 4. Get a local number and SIM card as soon as you land. Or you feel even more disconnected from your close ones and terribly lonely. 5.Never stay too far from your workplace or school. At least not till you know the city and the roads and have figured out the transportation. My school is half an hour away and to reach it I need to take a cab(which is not economical.) or a train. Two trains actually. I have to walk 20 minutes to the metro station take a train till mid way, then change another train and then walk from the station to school. It's almost as long as my flight from india was. 6.Never ever land up for a course or a job just a day before starting. Reach the place 5/7days before the commencement date of your course or school or job. Settle in. Drive or walk or take your preferred mode of transport to ure school or work place to figure the time and distance. 7.Try not to join a course/school in between the term. You are "The" new student, while all others know each other and are friends and have groups. They know the workings of the system they know their peers the teachers the way around school while you are struggling to find the toilet.Everyone else has all ready gotten their foothold while you are lost in the woods. They may not mean to,but you feel like an outsider and it takes much longer to regain your confidence when you are the most ignored and least informed person in class. 8.Oh and always and I mean always listen to your elders and carry theplas and masala tea packets. I used to laugh at all those who carried food and paid loads of money for excess baggage, but now I value theplas more than anything else. This hotel has no room service and the only place that would give me food in my room (slightly bigger room with a window.I changed my room.)is a sushi place. Tonight I had no interest in going down to the restaurant and again eat all alone,so I ordered in and my meal arrived cold and as dead as the fish. I dumped all of it and had masala tea(thanks to one of the kind waiters in the restaurant who lend me an electric kettle, and my mom who forced me to carry my tea packets and her homeopathy medicine.) in a bowl. That's right tea in a bowl with homeopathy pills as sweetner because there is no cup nor sugar in the room.(Mario, the kind waiter lend me a plate and bowl too.) Anyway I knew all of the above but I got it all wrong. My travel plan came about so last minute that there was no time nor availability of hotels or apartments at such a short notice. Today was my first day of school and I reached late because I hadn't accurately estimated the travel time. The school is very good, the teachers and staff are very helpful and supportive. The students almost ignore me and it's intimidating. I smile but I don't think they like me too much. Like I said, even if they don't intend to make me feel like an alien I can't help but feel like E.T. I am scared, nervous, out of place and even more out of sorts and worst still I am lonely. There's no joy in coming back to a cold and gloomy hotel room. I wasn't expecting it to be a cake walk, but I definitely didn't think my confidence and zest would start giving away so soon. I don't know how my kids did this. To come to a new place, not know anyone, not know the language, not know the place, be away from your friends and family, have no support system whatsoever and deal with the cold outside and even more inside yourself and yet be brave ,and confident and take it head on and succeed. Hats off to them really! My respect for them has grown manifolds. For now I am scared, nervous, out of place and even more out of sorts and worst still I am lonely. There's no joy in coming back to a cold and gloomy hotel room. I wasn't expecting it to be a cake walk, but I definitely didn't think my confidence and zest would start giving away so soon. I may be the outsider right now but I'm hoping to soon be 'Brown girl in the ring".
Pain......
Unannounced,it hits you, in your solar plexus with such force it awakens your dormant being. Pain....,. It's Infallible, unfaltering, unadulterated and pure. Embellished with craving and yearning. Anguish so mutant it caves into you. Pining carved on your insides. Covered with time, but indestructible, unmarred and intact. It's a concentrated emotion undiluted with experience. It's Abundant. Self sufficient and autonomous. Pain Needs no calling. No occasion nor excuse. A song,a place, a name,a face. It emerges out of nothing branding you. Undemanding of an alibi,It is Unapologetic. Shredding you in slivers. Knotting its gnarled fingers and wrenching your heart.Squeezing its dry of its capacity to feel anything else at all. And yet Descending like relief. It's Alive and palpable. Rattling every bone in your once alive carcass. Forced like a gush of blood throbbing through your veins. It's a welcome change from fake smiles And air kisses It's greedy. Guttural and feral. Unstoppable once it's tasted blood. Feeding on the unrequited Tasting destruction, relishing your ruins. Leaving you undone. It is selfish and demanding. Commanding absolute submission Taking what it rightfully owns. Consuming you whole. Ubiquitous and omnipresent. Unprecedented. Pain....... It never ceases to surprise me.
Happy Valentines Day
Happy Valentines Day!!!! Yeah, yeah,I know it was 2 days ago.π But Why pick just one day in the entire year to express love is beyond me. π€ Was nauseous almost with the "Happy Valentine Day" messages, red roses, chocolate bouquets, pink hearts and frivolous cards. π¬ So I did some research to find out about this day which is an official occasion to distribute copious amounts of love in various forms. This is what I found...... "Valentine's Day is an old tradition thought to have originated from a Roman Festival known as Lupercalia, according to History.com.It was held on February 15 as a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture.During the celebrations boys would draw names of girls from a box and the pair would be partners during the festival. These matches often led to marriage. The festival survived the initial rise of Christianity but was outlawed at the end of the 5th century when Pope Gelasius declared February 14 St Valentine's Day." Ok so the romans celebrated agriculture and fertility and the christians celebrated a holiday. What has that got to do with us.π We have our own Baisakhi and Gandhi Jayanti.π€ Wow!!!!! Doesn't sound that romantic. Does it?!!π€π€π€π€ No I'm not a cynic and I'm a hardcore, die hard romantic,πbut I just don't get the logic. All year you can ignore, fight, sulk, complain and suddenly on the 14th of Feb you decide to fire and rekindle your lost love?Really?????πWhy??? And why not on the 14th/15th16th of Feb,March,January and all 365 days a year. I too used to be a part of this circus.πMaking cards, buying absolutely useless gifts which would gather dust somewhere along the year, writing poems(They were useful I could use them repeatedly for various people. First boyfriend, mom, husband and maid too.)Gifting obnoxiously expensive RED roses, and assorted chocolates(which I regret not eating on my own.) Teddy bears (which accumulate so much dust they can give you an asthma attack.)π·Candle light dinners.( I love candle light, everyone looks beautiful and one can't see the spinach stuck in your teeth.)Wine.(wine is good anytime love or no loveπ.But I mostly screw up the cork!!!!π No don't read deeper into itπ‘! I mean I screw up opening the cork n then I ve to sieve the wine through a chai ka channi!πNow that mustn't seem very romantic π€π). Sexy outfits! Oh I've tried that. So some years ago to celebrate this much hyped day I lit candles in our bedroom chilled a champagne and wore sexy negligee ( which I had last worn on our honeymoon.)awaiting my husband. He came home gave one look at me and said- Vipul- Sorry I got delayed let's leave. Me-Leave?????π³To go where? Vipul-Out for dinner? Me-Out??????π³π‘π‘π‘π‘π‘(I was sprawled seductively on the bed in my sexy black nightie.)? Vipul- You are all dressed up so I thought we are going out!π€ I blew out the candles, changed into my pyjamas, threw him out of the room and drank up the champagne on my own. π‘π‘π‘π‘π‘π‘π‘So much for celebrating Valentine's Day. The pressure a day like this puts on us is unfair. Be sweet,be romantic,be passionate,be loving, hold hands,go on a long drive singing or at least listening to love songs.phewπ° basically behave outta your natural grain. But then one day is better than trying to pretend for 365 days. Make up for all the grievances and complaints in one day. Is it instant coffee or maggi noodles. There's no quick fix for love it's ongoing hard work. All of us feel it but we just forget to express it and that's where the trouble starts. No amount of gifts can makeup for the emptiness of years. But one gift I received on 14th Feb 2003 changed my life forever. It's the best and I mean BEST gift anyone could ever get. On 14th Feb 2003 I was blessed with my little baby! And he is absolutely a valentine baby. He's loving, caring, affectionate, expressive,a smooth talker,an absolute charmer, naughty eyes and has such a gorgeous pout he could give Kim Kardashian a complex. And he is my love and life. Perfect example of "love at first sight." Even if he was born on any other day it would still be a Valentine's Day for me.So I too celebrate Valentine's Day and have ever since each day because of my precious baby valentine!!!!!

Our baby has arrived!
OUR BABY HAS ARRIVED!!!ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ» No I wasn't expecting nor have I delivered but my baby sister just did. Which means our entire family did.ππππππππππ Yes that's exactly how it is. Whenever someone close to you is expecting or delivers a baby the lives of everyone around get filled with magic. Nothing short of a miracle. The excitement of a new life, small hand, little feet, soft skin and rosy lips. Baby names pouring in.Influx of gibberish baby words. Miniature clothes and booties, sweaters and baby blankets made by mom and mama. Sleepless nights. Traffic of well intended but imposing advice. Guessing games of who the baby looks like. A replay of labour stories. And of course landmarks proudly shared and documented, from the first potty to the first sound to the first smile. And the blinding but strong urge awakened in each mom to have yet another little one. It's priceless. It takes me right back to 5th of January 2002. I had been in labour for 24 hours and I had yet another 24 to go. The wait was long because though I had, in my Gynac's words-"Beautiful contractions" (Beautiful???π) But I wasn't dialated enough. On the 5th night My water bag gave way at moms. Dad mom and me rushed to the hospital. Forgetting almost to call Vipul.(he was at home which was the other end of the country. πAlmostπ.) I was in excruciating pain and yet the little one showed no signs of appearing. Worst still the baby was going into distress because he hadπ poopedπ). Now I knew what it meant to be "Full of shit!".π¬ I've come to realize that some of the most ridiculously funny conversations happen in stressful situations. My Delivery is a treasure trove such insane conversations. Anyway Meera aunty my gynecologist kept checking if I'd dialated,so much so that at a point of time I told her " If you push any further your hand is going to come out of my throat".ππ‘ Anyway through the night I kept pacing, pausing in between to deal with the contractions. To everyones surprise I was extremely calm, tolerant and strong through out my labour. No sound escaped me except a mumble of "Oh God! oh God!Oh God!" At every contraction which was five minutes apart,After hearing my mumbling a number of times my mom,who is very religious, couldn't contain herself. And she finally blurted. Mom-Take Ganpati Bappas name, Hanumanjis name why "Oh God???" π Me- Mom are you seriously being non-secular at this moment?π‘ Mom-No! Not at all. It just sounds ambiguous.π€ Me- Ambiguous or catholic?π Mom- No,no! Non-specific. Besides Mahim church is too far I doubt Jesus will make it in time?π Me-πππππ After this conversations we both suddenly realised,we were so busy calling on all the Gods we had forgotten to call the man who was responsible for my state.π So finally mom called him. He reached in no time. Benefits of delivering in the middle of the nightπ.If it was day he'd probably have reached on the kidos first birthday.π Anyway,he rushed into the room had one look at me and his blood pressure plummeted. So much for being strong.π! I was too much in pain to care for the father to be. And it was decided to leave him out of the operation theatre. No one had time to attend to a tall fainted man.π Finally after much waiting, and constantly monitoring Meera aunty decided to perform a c-section,while I was hell bent on having a normal delivery(the romance of motherhood!π). When she was prepping for the delivery my mom went to her with tea and biscuitsπ€. Out of concern of course. Because she was a mom and no one is supposed to work empty stomach, and definitely not miss breakfast.ππππ Everyone, from my husband to mom, dad,my mom in law everyone had tea and cookies π€€While I was starving to death and ready to kill.π‘π‘π‘ Women in labour should surely be allowed a couple of murders!π€π€π€π€ After much debate I walked into the OT. Still refusing to take epidural for the c-section. Meera aunty was very understanding and decided to indulge me one last time. Meera aunt- We'll try one last time, two pushes and if it's(didn't know the gender.) not out I will do the c-section. I agreed and gathered all my strength which had long abandoned me in the last 48 hoursπ₯π°πΆand pushedπ€. Me-(after the first push) Is it out?π° Meera aunt- Not yet! π Me- But I felt something escape me.π¦ Meera aunt-Gas!βΊοΈ Me-π Meera aunt- Breathe. Me- I can't the babies stuck in my lungsπ‘π‘π‘π‘ Meera aunt you- One deep breath and push......βΊοΈπ Me with whatever I was left with took a deep breath and pushed like my life depended on it. And lo behold his first cry....the most beautiful sound I had ever heard. I am getting goosebumps even as I write this. My neonatal pediac got my little slimy "Life" cradled in her arms. He had stopped crying and stared at me pointedly as I soaked in his entirety through my teary eyes. He was the most magnificent magic I had ever seen. He looked straight out of national geographic. Tall, thin,HUGE sunken eyes, mammoth ears on a big wobbly head delicately placed on a frail body and pink feet. He looked exactly like a chimpanzee's baby. And he was the most beautiful sight I ever laid eyes on. A year later I went through all of it again. 48 hours of labour, the anxiety the tension the prayers and equally mental conversations and yet again I saw The most beautiful sight ever. I Held him in my arms admiring my marshmallow. My arms and heart full of two magical beings.I was finally complete. As we are yet again today...... Blessed by our "Small Miracles."
Her optimism was undaunted, belief unwavered with experience. Scattering her faith generously...... Naive yet fearless,Callous and careless. Failure denied,Logic defied. Collecting shards of memories, Creating a mosaic of what could be. Cloak of romance, shredded with dejection. Futile yet flourishing,Despite abjection. Scattered pledges,Frayed at the edges. Ravenously unraveled, Yet Ravishingly tasselled Like a Phoenix m,from ashes rising, I'm a woman and I have wings!
Sinister Studio.
After much thinking I finally opened my own studio space.ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππ»ππππ!!! But when I suggested this idea to my family, there was contemplation, discussions, debate and conflict that took place. π€π³π²π±ππ‘ Questions galore!π Why do you need a separate place to work?π Why can't you just be at home and paint or write?π€ Will you go there every day?π³ What will you do there?π‘ What time to what time do you intend being there?π Why can't you work from office, help Vipul in the production.π Blah! Blah! Blah And not one of of these questions came from my husband. ππ» They came from my mom,my mom in law,my sister even some of my so called liberated friends.π‘π‘π‘ I had no clue I was going to be scrutinisedπ. I almost felt like I was applying for a work permit in USA under the reign of Trump!π All I wanted was a place, where I was just an artist, with my creative space and calm.πEvery creative person needs that kind of calm and I don't think it needs justification. My family is not exactly orthodox,at least not anymore after living with me for years.πOr rather dealing with a rule breaker for years and still they just couldn't wrap their heads around this idea. It was as ludicrous as having a child out of wedlock.ππ± Absolutely blasphemous!!π‘π‘π‘ I don't remember them asking Their husbands or sons once or brothers why they needed an office space. Or why couldn't the men just work/write from home. Or did they need to go to their own space everyday. And what did they achieve after being out for 8hours.π€ But me,I am different. Yes you guessed right. I am a woman, and a woman who doesn't do a proper job (read-banker,doctor,lawyer,ca etc.)π I am a housewife(an occasional actor)whose place is at home. Painting, writing, palmistry, tarrot reading, ikebana, gift packing etc are not real jobs, they're just hobbies and hobbies don't deserve a separate sanctuary do they?π I am 43years old, liberated, independent, educated, strong, unorthodox, sensible and a feisty new age woman and yet I have to answer these questions. π‘π‘ Not just these, when I come back from the studio everyday I'm asked "So what did you paint/write today?"π Do I look like a printing machine??π€ And if I'm blaze' enough to say I did nothing(read-stared at a blank canvas,or doodled on pages) π,Then there's this look of disbelief and disappointment.πππ Going by this my husband should be writing 350 scripts a yearπ And its not like I'm shying away from any of my responsibilities. My home still runs like clock work, staff or no staff. I cook if the cooks on a leave and clean if the maids taken an off and manage my kids lives across oceans and buy groceries and host a party at a short notice of an hour. BUT I go to a place I call a studio and stare at a canvas because I have nothing better to do. πObviously that's ridiculous. I'm not angry,I'm just baffled. My husband has no issues whatsoever with my decision but the women are bewildered at my thinking and I am at theirs. It's mutual.π³π³ And we talk of equality. That I'm starting afresh in new directions and being productive is hardly of consequence.βΉοΈ Had I been home watching back to back serials,I'd have been taken more seriously. Only if I knew what was happening between which "Saas Bahu" I'd probably be respected.π€π€π€π€
Trap the improbability...... Sieve the possibility.... Brush me like a flaming feather...... Ablaze in infallibility, Treasure me like the Dream catcher...........
WE ARE IMPERISHABLE!
On the 31st of december 2016, a shameful act humiliated not only women but every person who bears a conscience. Am I late to write about this? No! I didn't want to write about this when there was so much written about it already. So many voices raised. So much disdain expressed. Everything I felt too. I write about it today because even after 12 days, I still haven't forgotten and I never will. Like Many other humiliations women world over have experienced, being a woman, this hurt too I will carry on myself. I speak as a woman who has, like all other women, encountered such shameful behavior, at some point of time in life. When I did Monsoon Wedding I met so many women who accepted that they too have been subjected to inappropriate behavior, a wrong touch, nauseating words, filthy looks. Abuse, whether in word, touch,or look is still an abuse. The magnitude may vary but it's an insult still the same. It doesn't become less hurtful or less humiliating just because it's a whistle or a catcall. It's as demeaning and insulting. It's trespassing of our privacy and Violation of our respect. It's intrusion of the most offensive kind. And yet we women shrug it like a blemish. Yes,you heard it right. Blemish. I will give it no more importance than that. I refuse to give any more importance to the animals who did it,or the brutes who chose to justify it instead of condemning it. They are not worth it and neither does the savage act deserve another word wasted on it.Enough has been said about the perpetrators and their atrocities. Instead I write this to applaud women world over, who have been assaulted or attacked.Wheather as a child,as a teenager,as a girl or as a woman. No matter the damage we still come out unscathed. Not because we didn't hurt but because we know how to heal and rise above it. Every time anyone attacks us, they don't just violate a woman, they dishonor humanity. Those who inflict such barbarity, and a community that allows or silently witnesses such horror,THEY deserve to be ashamed NOT US! They can attack our bodies but our mind is untouchable, our spirit unbreakable, and our soul inextinguishable. WE ARE IMPERISHABLE!!!

Conjoined Me!
Being a mom to two kids is like being a Conjoined twin. And being a mom to two boys is like being a Conjoined twin with a split personality disorder. Two bodies, diverse minds, different choices,a la Jekyll and Hyde with one organ that conjoins them, the heart, and thats me. Itβs a constant tug of war. With two not so little humans, attached with umbilical cords to one body, running a marathon in opposite directionsπ°.Pulling the blessed but stretched out rubber band of a mom.π€ When my baby was 3months old I was expecting again. And I was sure I was going ahead with it. I was warned of the pitfalls but my brain was in postpartum ecstasyππ. I have many such interesting and entertaining proofs but That would take chronicles spread over 15 years. Theirs is not a Luv-Kush relationship itβs more of a love hate one. It started since the second one was born and it continues till date. They fought recently. I tried mediating between them but and after being unsuccessful and exasperated I suggested we split them. And move them to two different schools, academies ,and ideally different continents. Just until they find a different planet that supports life. And suddenly from being the "Stretched Rubber band momβ I was βWretched Gabbar bad momβ and they Jai and Veeru. I have to admit, that even a mere mention of separating them, unites them. If anyone (even me)says or does anything against either one they take up for each other and become a team. Strong, solid, supportive, unbreakable and unified. They Conjoin To complete me!

Theirs is not a Luv-Kush relationship it's more of a love hate one. It started since the second one was born and it continues till date. They fought recently. I tried mediating between them but and after being unsuccessful and exasperated I suggested we split them. And move them to two different schools, academies ,and ideally different continents. Just until they find a different planet that supports life. And suddenly from being the "Stretched Rubber band mom" I was "Wretched Gabbar bad mom" and they Jai and Veeru. I have to admit, that even a mere mention of separating them, unites them. If anyone (even me)says or does anything against either one they take up for each other and become a team. Strong, solid, supportive, unbreakable and unified. They Conjoin To complete me!
