Megs and Fury walked towards the S.H.I.E.L.D. Analytical room. “Dad, what are you going to tell the World Security Council?” She asked.
Fury turned and looked at her, he was proud of how far she had come within S.H.I.E.L.D. However, being his daughter, he knew that he could confide in her more than any other agent. She was a force to be reckoned with, and she kept a few people close to her, Mel and Phil to be exact. Granted he knew that she was close with his right hand agent, Hill. Plus whatever they talked about, he knew that she didn’t tell anyone else.
“That we are at war.” He answered.
They got to the doors and stopped. “The Avengers Initiative?”
He nodded and headed into the room. Soon he was facing several large monitors as he started the conference with members of the World Security Council. And it didn’t take long before things were starting to get heated.
“This is out of line, Director. You’re dealing with forces you can’t control.” The first one stated.
Fury looked at him. “You ever been in a war, Councilman? In a firefight? Did you feel an overabundance of control?”
“You saying that this Asgard has declared war on our planet?”
Fury shook his head. “Not Asgard. Loki.” He stated.
The second Councilman spoke. “He can’t be working alone. What about the other one? His brother.”
“Our intelligence says, Thor is not a hostile. But he’s worlds away; we can’t depend on him to help. It’s up to us.”
The first Councilman spoke again. “Which is why you should be focusing on Phase 2, it was designed for exactly…”
Fury interrupted him. “Phase 2 isn’t ready, our enemy is. We need a response team.”
“The Avengers Initiative was shut down.” The first Councilman barked.
Fury was starting to get a little angry. “This isn’t about the Avengers.”
“We’re running the world’s greatest covert security network and you’re gonna leave the fate of the human race to a handful of freaks.”
“I’m not leaving anything to anyone.” Fury stated. “We need a response team. These people may be isolated, unbalanced even, but I believe with the right push they can be exactly what we need.”
The second Councilman shook his head. “You believe?”
“War isn’t won by sentiment, Director.” The first one stated.
“No.” Fury answered. “It’s won by soldiers.” He said and walked out.
Once outside the office Megs looked at him, “Went well I take it?”
Fury started walking down the hall, “Come with me.”
Megs caught up to him and sighed, “Where we going?”
“Out.”
---
Soon Megs found herself and Fury walking up to an old, almost WW2-esque boxing gym. Megs looked at Fury as they watched the first Avenger, Steve Rogers pummeling a punching bag. With every swing, it was getting harder.
Megs looked back up at her Dad, “That’s the Capsicle we pulled into P.E.G.A.S.U.S.?” She asked.
Fury watched as Steve’s rage kept building as he punched the bag.
“We found him when we found the Tesseract.” Fury answered.
Steve closed his eyes as he punched and punched the bag.
Megs couldn’t help but watch, “You think it's a good idea to bring him in, Dad?”
Fury looked down at her a gave a small smile. “We can use all of the Avengers.”
Steve punched the bag so hard that it opened up, tearing off its chain and spilling out the sand. He stood there, breathing hard, letting out over 70 years of pent up repressed feelings. After he took a couple breathers, he went over and picked up another punching bag, which was laying next to over a dozen other bags. He hooked the bag up and started punching all over again.
“Trouble sleeping?” Fury asked as he and his daughter walked towards Steve.
Steve didn’t miss a beat while punching. “I slept for seventy years, sir. I think I’ve had my fill.”
Megs stood at attention a step behind her father as he spoke. “Then you should be out, celebrating, seeing the world.”
Steve finally stopped punching the bag and walked over to the bench. He sat down as he started to take the tape off his hands. “I went under, the world was at war, I wake up, they say we won. They didn’t say what we lost.”
Fury and Megs walk a little closer to him. “We’ve made some mistakes along the way. Some very recently.” Fury replied.
“You here with a mission, sir?” Steve asked.
Fury nodded. “I am.”
“Trying to get me back in the world?”
Megs took her chance, “Trying to save it.” She stated. She walked over to Steve and handed him a file on the Tesseract, along with other files on Hydra’s projects.
Steve looked at the files. “Hydra’s secret weapon.” He simply stated.
“Howard Stark fished that out of the ocean when he was looking for you.” Fury explained. “He thought what we think, the Tesseract could be the key to unlimited sustainable energy. That’s something the world sorely needs.”
Steve looked up from the files, “Who took it from you?” He asked.
“He’s called Loki.” Fury answered. “He’s not from around here. There’s a lot we’ll have to bring you up to speed on if you’re in. The world has gotten even stranger than you already know.”
“At this point.” Steve stated handing the files back to Megs. “I doubt anything would surprise me.”
“Ten bucks says you’re wrong.” Fury bet.
“There’s a debriefing package waiting for you back at your apartment.” Megs added.
Steve turned and picked up a punching bag. He placed it on his shoulder and started walking out of the gym.
“Is there anything you can tell us about the Tesseract that we ought to know now?” Fury asked.
“You should have left it in the ocean.” Steve answered over his shoulder as he walked out.
Megs turned and looked up at Fury, “Well that's a lot of comfort from the guy that’s been frozen over 70 years.”
