Shiki had always loved Valentineâs Day. The fun, lovey-dovey imagery, the candy sales! The idea of a day to celebrate love, to show someone how much you really cared about them. Sheâd heard others claim one shouldnât need a holiday to express their truest feelings, and while that was true, this Valentineâs day was special, because it was a day she could express her adoration, having been unable to for the last three years. This year, she was going to spend it with him.
She enters the little coffee shop, spotting his stark orange hair among the crowd and behind the counter right away. She lets the customers in front of her finish their business, and sheâs face to face with him, feigning a pouty look. âMaking you work on Valentineâs Day? Donât the managers know who your girlfriend is?â she rolls her eyes dramatically, concluding with a smile. After a moment, her gaze falls to an article in front of her; a little gift box. She puts two-and-two together. âIs this⌠for me?âÂ
After a moment, a fingertip pulls at the ribbons and she gently tears the festive paper to reveal a box. Opening the top, a set of chocolates are arranged carefully inside. They had a darling sort of home-made charm about them, and it made her heart well as she realized; heâd gone out of his way to make chocolates for her. She wastes no time, taking a choice heart-shaped chocolate lump with a little cherry on top and popping it in her mouth; as she imagined, it was as sweet as the boy who made it.
âTheyâre perfect.âThe hue of her cheeks shifted towards the color of ardency, âThank you, Neku,â she wanted to smother him with hugs and kisses and his adorably cutesy pet name, but⌠he was still on the clock. She wished she couldâve spent the whole day with him, but she knew the downs of having to work for a living. In fact, she should probably do her part, then be on her way.
She shifts to reach into the little handbag sheâd been carrying. âI⌠made you something, too.â It wasnât a lot, and given the amount of money sheâd made these days, she couldâve gone all out in buying him just about anything he couldâve wanted, but insteadâŚ
She holds out her hands and in them two dolls of their likenesses, quite like the ones sheâd made those three years ago, though markedly different in that their appearances reflected their current ages and fashion styles⌠(though they were still cute!) An older âNekkunâ and âShiichanâ, or perhaps these two were simply just âNekuâ and âShikiâ.
âBut, this time,â she starts, setting the plush of her likeness in front of him, and pulling his plush back to cradle him against her heart. âI want to keep Neku.â
She pops another chocolate in her mouth and cuddles her beloved fluff boyfriend against her chest. An ardent flush shows on her face, and sheâs so happy she gets to see her important person on this important day, for the first time in three years. âHappy Valentineâs Day, Neku.â
Time always seemed to be passing too quickly nowadays, what with how used to its absence heâd gotten while away, but today it almost seemed as if it were standing still as he waited, anxiously tapping his fingers on the counter as other customers came and went. Every few seconds heâd check the timestamp on his phone, wondering how long itâd been since heâd messaged her. Slowly but surely the minutes passed until finally a familiar face walked in, her beautiful radiance easily setting her apart from the rest of the light crowd.
He opened his mouth to explain that his shift was over, now, but choked on whatever words were meant to come out as she asked if the carefully wrapped box in front of him was for her. Suddenly, all he could manage in response was a small, nervous nod. He hadnât been to school in years, so why did he suddenly feel like a shy gradeschooler trying to confess to their crush?
Neku had always been nervous at how others would perceive his art, but this was so much more than that. Even when he was commissioned to draw something for someone, he didnât put nearly as much love into that art as he did for his more personal works. This was the first time in a long time heâd put so much of himself into something that was for someone else. He let out a breath he hadnât realised heâd been holding when she thanked him for the gift. Sheâd called them perfect, but that wasnât the part he cared about. He was just glad she liked them at all.
ââŚYouâre welcome.â He would have said more, had she not continued. Neku raised an eyebrow as she retrieved her own gift. Part of him wanted to insist that she hadnât had to do anything, but the same could be said about the effort Neku had put into his gift, as well. Besides, he was honoured, in a way. She had so much less time now than sheâd used to, and sheâd still put the effort into making him something. And what a something it was. His eyes widened with surprise as he saw the perfectly adorned little dolls. He held the one he was handed close and carefully, as if he were worried it might break if he looked at it too hard.
âHappy Valentines day, Shiki.â He took in a quick breath to reassure himself before leaning over the counter and planting a small kiss on her lips. He drew back almost immediately, but only so he could jump the counter between them (instead of exiting normally). Once he was over, he held the doll of his partnerâs likeness up to the one Shiki held, pretending as if the dolls were kissing as well.
