Title: Plastic is Fantastic

Artist Statement: My artwork explores the theme of how plastic surgery is fantastic. Plastic surgery is on the rise. The public chooses surgical methods over quick fixes that fail to deliver promised results. It has also been proven that beauty can be recreated. People are skin-deep. My work explores images overlapping each other. A human face is superimposed over a Barbie dollâs face to create depth and dimension to show that behind that pretty face, there is a Barbie, where people are driven by superficial needs. My work uses the digital medium. The title itself influences the finished artwork. The glossy textured paper and the shades of colours, together with the surgical knife, head towards a clinical yet glamorous feel.

Artist Statement: My artwork explores the way a series of connection links two or more items in a particular object, a Dream Catcher. Dream catchers originated from the Native Americans, and are used as charms to rid away nightmares. It consists of a hoop that wove a web and is decorated with feathers and beads. The concept of my work is inspired by Giuseppe Arcimboldo. His works use optical illusions, where he beautifully arranged compositions of objects to create stunning portraits. My work explores the different perspectives of a dream catcher and the scale of the items found on the object. This allows me to construct the dream catchers as facial features for my portraiture. My work uses a mixed medium of watercolour, colour pencils and ink. The dream catcher itself influences the finished artwork, where the tinted textured paper and the colours head towards a neutral tone that is enhanced with ink.
