I am not the first person you loved. You are not the first person I looked at with a mouthful of forevers. We have both known loss like the sharp edges of a knife. We have both lived with lips more scar tissue than skin. Our love came unannounced in the middle of the night. Our love came when weād given up on asking love to come. I think that has to be part of its miracle. This is how we heal. I will kiss you like forgiveness. You will hold me like Iām hope. Our arms will bandage and we will press promises between us like flowers in a book. I will write sonnets to the salt of sweat on your skin. I will write novels to the scar of your nose. I will write a dictionary of all the words I have used trying to describe the way it feels to have finally, finally found you. And I will not be afraid of your scars. I know sometimes itās still hard to let me see you in all your cracked perfection, but please know: whether itās the days you burn more brilliant than the sun or the nights you collapse into my lap your body broken into a thousand questions, you are the most beautiful thing Iāve ever seen. I will love you when you are a still day. I will love you when you are a hurricane.

The happiest people are those who think the most interesting thoughts. Those who decide to use leisure as a means of mental development, who love good music, good books, good pictures, good company, good conversation, are the happiest people in the world. And they are not only happy in themselves, they are the cause of happiness in others.

āFor the past few days, peaceful Turkish citizens have been protesting the demolition of Taksim Gezi Park, one of the few green areas left in the center of Istanbul. The plan by the Erdogan-run AKP government is to build a large shopping center instead, benefitting his own interests and filling his own pockets. What started with a mere 100 protestors turned into tens of thousands over the course of a few days. People camped out in the park, sang songs, read books, danced. I was there yesterday and it was heartwarming. Prime Minister Erdogan made a public announcement two days ago stating, āWe have made up our mindsā, and that nothing will stop his plans to destroy the park. He subsequently ordered his police forces to attack protestors in the park using water cannons and tear gas without warning in the early hours of the morning. This has been happening for the past two days, and continues as I write these words. Tents were burned as people slept in them, innocent citizens were dragged away and had tear gas sprayed directly into their faces, kicked and punched where they were on the ground. Bystanders on their way to work also got sprayed. The center of Istanbul is now a war-zone.Ā Innocent people are being attacked, injured andĀ hospitalisedĀ There are unofficial reports of one person being dead with his ID confiscated by officials (an eerie replay of the May 1 attacks when an innocent young girl was put into a coma due to tear gas attacks. This girl was later labeled by the government as a terrorist) This has become a matter about more than just saving trees. This has always been about more than that. This is an āI can do whatever I damn well wantā, fascist mentality that not only heavilyĀ suppressesĀ but openly attacks its own people. To make matters worse, media channels are being censored so as not to display the news. #direngeziparki is now the 2nd worldwide trending topic on Twitter. As our friends overseas, we need your help. Send this message to everyone you know. Amnesty International has already announced it condemns the use of excessive force against the protestors, and has called on the Turkish police to stop the use of violence, and to respect the protestorsā rights of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression. But it hasnāt helped.Ā
The protests have and will continue despite the abuse but it needs all the attention it can get, especially considering Turkish news channels heavily alter and misrepresent the nature of what is actually occurring in the heart of Istanbul.Ā
Please create awareness internationally about our plight, or matters are going to get much, much worse. We want all international media channels - soclal and mass - to report this news.
Please help us to share this message and stop Erdoganās ruthless, inhumane acts. In aĀ never-endingĀ series of human rights abuses that haveĀ occurredĀ under his leadership, this is the last straw.āĀ

āAny ideas for the new park sculpture?ā
āHow about a giant, metallic octopus attacking a rook?ā
āPerfect.ā
That's ridiculous and beautiful all at the same time. Sculptor be gettin' his raise.
Because thatās still how the Irish are seen; as twinkly-eyed fuckers with a pig under their arm, high-stamping around the world going, āIāll paint your house now but watch out, I might steal the ladder.ā Which is only half true.

We donāt need to have just one favorite. We keep adding favorites. Our favorite book is always the book that speaks most directly to us at a particular stage in our lives. And our lives change. We have other favorites that give us what we most need at that particular time. But we never lose the old favorites. Theyāre always with us. We just sort of accumulate them.ā

But the 8-hour workday is too profitable for big business, not because of the amount of work people get done in eight hours (the average office worker gets less than three hours of actual work done in 8 hours) but because it makes for such a purchase-happy public. Keeping free time scarce means people pay a lot more for convenience, gratification, and any other relief they can buy. It keeps them watching television, and its commercials. It keeps them unambitious outside of work. Weāve been led into a culture that has been engineered to leave us tired, hungry for indulgence, willing to pay a lot for convenience and entertainment, and most importantly, vaguely dissatisfied with our lives so that we continue wanting things we donāt have. We buy so much because it always seems like something is still missing.

They told me the big black Labās name was Reggie, as I looked at him lying in his pen. The shelter was clean, no-kill, and the people really friendly. Iād only been in the area for six months, but everywhere I went in the small college town, people were welcoming and open. Everyone waves when you pass them on the street.
But something was still missing as I attempted to settle in to my new life here, and I thought a dog couldnāt hurt. Give me someone to talk to. And I had just seen Reggieās advertisement on the local news. The shelter said they had received numerous calls right after, but they said the people who had come down to see him just didnāt look like āLab people,ā whatever that meant. They mustāve thought I did. But at first, I thought the shelter had misjudged me in giving me Reggie and his things, which consisted of a dog pad, bag of toys almost all of which were brand new tennis balls, his dishes and a sealed letter from his previous owner. See, Reggie and I didnāt really hit it off when we got home. We struggled for two weeks (which is how long the shelter told me to give him to adjust to his new home). Maybe it was the fact that I was trying to adjust, too. Maybe we were too much alike. I saw the sealed envelope. I had completely forgotten about that. āOkay, Reggie,ā I said out loud, āletās see if your previous owner has any advice.ā ____________ _________ _________ _________ To Whomever Gets My Dog: Well, I canāt say that Iām happy youāre reading this, a letter I told the shelter could only be opened by Reggieās new owner. Iām not even happy writing it. He knew something was different. So let me tell you about my Lab in the hopes that it will help you bond with him and he with you. First, he loves tennis balls. The more the merrier. Sometimes I think heās part squirrel, the way he hoards them. He usually always has two in his mouth, and he tries to get a third in there. Hasnāt done it yet. Doesnāt matter where you throw them, heāll bound after them, so be careful. Donāt do it by any roads. Next, commands. Reggie knows the obvious ones ā-āsit,ā āstay,ā ācome,ā āheel.ā He knows hand signals, too: He knows āballā and āfoodā and āboneā and ātreatā like nobodyās business. Feeding schedule: twice a day, regular store-bought stuff; the shelter has the brand. Heās up on his shots. Be forewarned: Reggie hates the vet. Good luck getting him in the car. I donāt know how he knows when itās time to go to the vet, but he knows. Finally, give him some time. Itās only been Reggie and me for his whole life. Heās gone everywhere with me, so please include him on your daily car rides if you can. He sits well in the backseat, and he doesnāt bark or complain. He just loves to be around people, and me most especially. And thatās why I need to share one more bit of info with youā¦His nameās not Reggie. Heās a smart dog, heāll get used to it and will respond to it, of that I have no doubt. But I just couldnāt bear to give them his real name. But if someone is reading this ⦠well it means that his new owner should know his real name. His real name is āTank.ā Because, that is what I drive. I told the shelter that they couldnāt make āReggieā available for adoption until they received word from my company commander. You see, my parents are gone, I have no siblings, no one I couldāve left Tank with .. and it was my only real request of the Army upon my deployment to Iraq, that they make one phone call to the shelter ⦠in the āeventā ⦠to tell them that Tank could be put up for adoption. Luckily, my CO is a dog-guy, too, and he knew where my platoon was headed. He said heād do it personally. And if youāre reading this, then he made good on his word. Tank has been my family for the last six years, almost as long as the Army has been my family. And now I hope and pray that you make him part of your family, too, and that he will adjust and come to love you the same way he loved me. If I have to give up Tank to keep those terrible people from coming to the US I am glad to have done so. He is my example of service and of love. I hope I honored him by my service to my country and comrades. All right, thatās enough. I deploy this evening and have to drop this letter off at the shelter. Maybe Iāll peek in on him and see if he finally got that third tennis ball in his mouth. Good luck with Tank. Give him a good home, and give him an extra kiss goodnight - every night - from me. Thank you, Paul Mallory ____________ _________ _________ _______ I folded the letter and slipped it back in the envelope. Sure, I had heard of Paul Mallory, everyone in town knew him, even new people like me. Local kid, killed in Iraq a few months ago and posthumously earning the Silver Star when he gave his life to save three buddies. Flags had been at half-mast all summer. I leaned forward in my chair and rested my elbows on my knees, staring at the dog. āHey, Tank,ā I said quietly. The dogās head whipped up, his ears cocked and his eyes bright. āCāmere boy.ā He was instantly on his feet, his nails clicking on the hardwood floor. He sat in front of me, his head tilted, searching for the name he hadnāt heard in months. āTank,ā I whispered. His tail swished. I kept whispering his name, over and over, and each time, his ears lowered, his eyes softened, and his posture relaxed as a wave of contentment just seemed to flood him. I stroked his ears, rubbed his shoulders, buried my face into his scruff and hugged him. āItās me now, Tank, just you and me. Your old pal gave you to me.ā Tank reached up and licked my cheek. āSo whatdaya say we play some ball?ā His ears perked again. āYeah? Ball? You like that? Ball?ā Tank tore from my hands and disappeared into the next room. And when he came back, he had three tennis balls in his mouth.ā
