Jenna's ears perk up, pointing toward the stranger. She doesn't know this person, nor their scent โโ but the human is clearly talking to her โโ and her voice sounds nice. It has that soft, inviting pitch that most humans use to indicate it's safe to approach. PRETTY GIRL. Jenna recognizes that name ; Rosie's mother often uses it around her. She knows this means : a friend. A gentle soul.
Jenna looks behind her, then beside her, and, finally, tentatively, she takes a few steps toward the other. She wags her curled tail, gently but shyly, as she approaches. When she is close enough, she leans forward, giving the others' forearm a sniff. The human smells unfamiliar, but not unpleasant. She's not from home. Full of adventure, perhaps โโ like she's often operating metal over mountains? Jenna's never smelled this scent before. Wagging her tail again, she wants to indicate reciprocal friendliness anyhow, and she pins her ears slightly to make her eyes more visible. Looking up, she gazes into the others' , as if to say: hello; who are you?

Jenna tilts her head to the side, gently, watching the other. From her scent, and her appearance, it's obvious that Peg is expecting a puppy. Perhaps even a litter. Jenna's glad that she's found this warm place. โ I'm Jenna. It's lovely to meet you, Peg. Here. Please; you should stay warm. โ
Moving toward Peg, Jenna lowers her head, allowing her scarf to fall to the floor. She then picks it up with her mouth and drapes it over Peg's shoulders.

Jenna can't help but let a genuine laugh out at her friend's ruffled response ; it's soft, but it comes from her center. She feels badly for asking it, but she needed to know. She'd never want anything to get in the way of spending time with her best friend. ESPECIALLY NOT STEELE.

through my discussions with @wolfpackmuses , zombie's steele and just ... my general feelings on the characters, i really think it adds some interesting depth / more layers to the film to have the idea that perhaps steele and jenna were friends at some point. perhaps before balto lived in the area, or before jenna knew balto, and when they were right out of their teenage years. perhaps jenna and steele had a moment of possible romance. but then steele just. kinda. keeps going downhill ; he gets more and more arrogant as time goes on and as he wins, immerses himself in his musher / team, and starts seeking endless glory. i think there is a part of jenna that knows steele ; she knows when he's lying, she knows he's full of narcissism and rage, and she's disappointed in what he's become, and that place of knowing could be deeper than she's just a perceptive, empathetic individual ; maybe she was, once, also his friend.
the film doesn't touch on it, of course, but another interesting thing to think about is that those sled dogs lived a harsh and brutal existence most of the time, and it makes a lot of sense that steele would have grown up bitter, violent, and narcissistic. the dogs were often trained with fear and abuse tactics, and the leads kept the other dogs in line by use of force. they had to remain the alpha to remain the leader. there was no room for weakness or sensitivity ; they were ready to be challenged always because they needed to be ready. jenna, of course, is not a sled dog, and so she's valued for her companionship and emotional sensitivity. steele, on the other hand, would not have been. and so, he's playing his part for the humans, and playing it well, and so is she. and in that, they can't ever relate to each other. any friendship they had would have been doomed from the start.
Oh. That was sad.
Charlie gave her a sympathetic look, his gaze soft. โOh, wellโฆ sorry to hear itโฆโ
He glanced away, uncertain of how to react. He wasnโt a big fan of humans, but this was a child, and if she was illโฆ
This poor husky was a kind soul. That much was clear in an instant. There werenโt many of her nature left in the world- to him, at least- and he wasnโt about to let her go home empty-pawed.
Plus, he felt guilty for only thinking about her looks until now. She was more than just a pretty face.
So, Charlie looked back up at her. โListen, uhโฆ I canโฆ give ya a little somethinโ to help out, if ya want. Thereโs some extra cash aโ mine thatโs kept upstairs for, uh, safekeepinโ, anโ I donโt need it right now.โ
He felt a little embarrassed, too, and chuckled sheepishly as he rubbed his neck. โHeh, so, yeahโฆ I-I can go grab it, if ya want it. Thatโs probโly easier than you havinโ โta earn money, yโknow?โ
Charlie got down from his seat and waited for her to join him. โUnless youโre in a hurry, I can show ya around, too- just in case ya ever wanna come back, heh.โ
โ Oh! โ Jenna's taken by surprise for a moment ; she hadn't meant to garner sympathy or make him feel any sort of obligation to her by telling her story ; she had simply wanted to talk to someone . . . perhaps feel a bit less . . . alone. But this is so sweet. She's touched at his extremely kind offer, and, after a moment of shock at his immediate willingness to give, her mouth falls into a soft smile, releasing an exhale with it. She places a paw on his arm softly.
โ That's very kind of you, but I couldn't possibly โโ I . . . I wouldn't want to just take your . . . โ
When he gets down from his seat, she stops . . . hesitates for a moment ; she knows following him might indicate she had accepted the money. She's not ready to do that, kind as he's being. However, meeting his eyes, her own soft and luminous with a gentle warmth and thankfulness, she offers an alternative, instead.
โ Perhaps, instead of the money, you might give me some pointers on how to win? If that's allowed, of course. โ
Finally getting down from her own chair, she begins to follow him.
โ I'd love that. And who do I have the pleasure of calling my tour guide? โ

From a younger Steele for a younger Jenna? Had the brainrot set in of having a more fun and relaxed Steele after what we talked about, so-
โ Why? You mean because of the race? โ Jenna knows it will be Steele's first one next week ; he hasn't been able to stop talking about it, in fact. This is the first time he's said something so vulnerable, though, and it's caught her off guard. Usually, he's joking, bragging, or playing it up for his team. Jenna's not used to a vulnerable Steele.
Over the past few months, they've become friends, somewhat, and she likes him well enough ; he's a joker โโ a bit of a hothead, perhaps, but she suspects he'll grow out of it โโ a lingering bit from puppyhood, perhaps โโ and Jenna knows he's more than just what his musher wants. More than the athletic, useful CHAMPION sled dog he so desperately wants to emulate. At least, Jenna thinks he is. She hopes he is.
Steele, however . . . sometimes, truthfully, she doubts lately if he thinks he's more.
Taking a tentative step toward him, she frowns. She nudges his shoulder gently with her own. โ You won't. And I'm sure your human will understand if you don't win. โ She smiles, shyly, meeting his eyes. โ Humans understand. โ
