Chan had always been the person who noticed the little things.
It was something everyone knew about him.
He noticed when you got quieter than usual. He noticed when people’s laughter sounded forced. He noticed when the boys were tired but insisted they were fine. He noticed the tiny changes in the people he loved because caring about someone meant paying attention.
But there was one thing he wished he didn’t notice.
Your smile.
It wasn’t that he didn’t love it.

And Chan hated that he understood why, hated the way he thought about it, about you.

When you laughed, his eyes still flickered there; when you smiled in pictures, he still focused on your mouth.
And every time he did, he hated himself a little more.

It was almost annoying how good he was at it.
It took a lot for him to react; his face was always a well-composed mask, hiding what he was really thinking and feeling, it was something he learned early on in his time as a trainee.

But the truth was that Lee Know cared, almost too much.
He just didn’t always know how to express it.
And that was why he noticed you.

He opened the car door for you before getting in on the other side. You didn't mention your change of wardrobe, just pulled up the direction to the event, and chatted about your day.
And somehow that made him feel worse.
He wondered how you could love him more than he loved himself, because the person he wanted to stand tall for…
was the same person who made him feel small, and where was the pride in that?
Hyunjin:
Hyunjin had always been surrounded by beauty.

The thought always made him feel sick because he didn’t want a different version of you.

He loved your laugh, your voice, the way you cared about him, the way you remembered little things about him that even he forgot.

But sometimes, his mind betrayed him.
And he was terrified that meant something about his heart.

Hyunjin hummed as he watched you watch yourself.

There was always this palpable tension between you and Gunil. It could be felt the second the two of you were in the same room. Almost visible in the glances you shared. The moment you two lock eyes? Something piercing flashes.
Tonight isn’t any different. You’re at Jiseok’s New Years Eve Bash. It’s more of a small house party, but Jiseok insists on keeping the name, “For the vibes.”
Presently you’re standing in a corner with Hyeongjun and a Christmas tree that Jiseok is yet to take down. You take a sip of your questionable apple cider. Questionable because it tastes like there is something else mixed in there, but it’s subtle enough that you can’t tell if it’s some kind of alcohol or just expired. Knowing Jiseok you wouldn’t be surprised if it was leftover from last year’s party.
The rim of the cup is resting against your lips, now room temperature liquid rushing down your throat when Gunil and some of his other friends (read Jungsu and Seungmin) entered the room. Your eyes manage to catch Gunil’s as you sip. An invisible arrow pieces through the room. Across the line of sight you and Gunil are sharing. You lower the cup and avert your eyes with an annoyed look on your face, letting out a distasteful hum too.
Hyeongjun noticed this small interaction too. It was hard not to. The tension between you and Gunil was so evident. Many other party-goers' heads were also turning at the sudden shift in the room.
“What is your deal with Gunil? I just realized that I never asked,” Hyeongjun questioned. You inhale a breath and let it out, shoulders moving up and back down as you do so.
“That’s the thing,” you begin and take a glance over at where Gunil stands on the other side of the room. “Nothing has ever really happened between us,” you say.
“Huh?” Hyeongjun's face contorted into one full of confusion.
“Yeah.” You rock back and forth on your feet. “I don’t really have a reason for not liking him. In fact some one could describe him as a…good guy.” The pause you took made it sound like you had to force those last two words out and frankly you did. “And that wouldn’t be wrong, but for me,” you emphasized, placing one hand over your chest. “I just really want to punch him in his face,” you state.
Hyeongjun chuckled, “So you just don’t get along with him?” he summed up.
“Pretty much, but you don’t get along with everyone,” you shrugged.
“There’s just so much tension between the two of you that it seems like something must’ve happened to cause it,” he said.
You shrugged again. “Maybe we were enemies in a past life and that hatred rolled over into this one.”
“Somehow that is more logical than you wanting to punch him in his face for no reason,” Hyeongjun remarks with a bit of humor.
Midnight was nearing and all the couple of the party paired up together and ran off somewhere where they could share a special moment when the clock strikes twelve. Leaving their single friends to group together to rein in the new year. Unfortunately this led you to being in the same group as Gunil, since you shared many mutual friends.
“Maybe we should make Gunil and y/n hug when it hits midnight,” Jooyeon suggested.
“As if,” you scoffed. “What are you even saying?” Jooyeon held his hands up in defense.
“I’m just saying maybe if you two started the year off with a hug you two could finally get along,” he says. In the background you can hear someone chorusing about it being one minute left till midnight.
“Jooyeon, Gunil and I have not got along in all the years we’ve known each other. I doubt that a hug would fix anything,” you voice.
“You never know,” Seungmin chimed in. Again you scoff.
“Don’t support his stupid idea,” you tell Seungmin.
“It’s not stupid!” Jooyeon defended.
“Yes it is!” you refuted.
Now it’s only ten seconds till midnight and right when you think you're about to bring in the new year by arguing over with Jooyeon there’s a forceful yank at your wrist. Next thing you know you’re stumbling into Gunil’s chest.
“What are you doing?” You placed your hands on his chest, ready to push him away. However he grabs your wrist, locking you in place against him.
“Giving you a reason to punch me,” he says while leaning in. Then without missing a beat he connected his lips to yours right as the clock struck midnight. It felt like all that tension that was simmering between the two of you finally boiled over. Especially when you found yourself pressing your lips back against his.
You just reined in the new year by kissing Gunil and you’re not sure if that makes you want to punch him or kiss him again.
