I’ve seen the name “Shinhwa” here and there ever since I got into K-Pop (which was 2008 or 2009). There was a joke that I had seen reblogged a few times that reads something like:

Manager: “Don’t do that! You’ll ruin your image!”

K-Pop Group: “Sorry”

Super Junior: “What image?”

Shinhwa: “Im…age…?”

So I had always been a little curious about them. I never looked them up though because I had been trying to keep my K-Pop obsession under control.

ANYWAYS.

I started out as an only girl groups kind of fan. Then I got curious about Super Junior because I saw their name everywhere. And I started watching all of the Super Junior to figure out what the appeal was. By the time I found out it was too late. I loved Super Junior and only Super Junior.

Fast forward a few years.

I had started to see clips around the time they released “Sexy, Free and Single” and the repackaged version “Spy” of Super Junior on this show with these older entertainers. I didn’t know the name of the show and had the hardest time finding out. But I saw a clip here, a clip there. Then May 2014 I finally discovered the full episodes that SuJu appeared on. By the end of the episode I didn’t even remember that Super Junior was guesting on the show. The six funny, weird, silly, ridiculous members of the show had completely stolen my attention. I had to find out who they were. And when I found the answer I was like

“Oh. Oh no. Nonononono. This is Shinhwa? The Shinhwa I’ve seen brief mention of throughout my K-Pop fandom. Nonononono. Oh damn.” and then “I’m lost. I’ve fallen overboard. I’m beyond saving. Just abandon me here.”

I watched ALL of Shinhwa Broadcast within a week. And wasn’t satisfied so I watched it all again. And then downloaded and listened to “The Return” and “The Classic”. And wasn’t satisfied so I put them on repeat. Then I spent weeks tracking down every show and appearance and music video and album so I could watch and listen to more Shinhwa. And then because the gods love me, Eric was cast in a new drama and I got to watch more Shinhwa. And then Dongwan put out a solo album that was absolutely fantastic. And then they started working on their new album “We” and I waited with decreasing patience for more new Shinhwa. And then I got it. Lots of it. And it’s still not enough. I’m like a voracious wild beast with an insatiable appetite for Shinhwa.

Over the last year and a bit that I have been hopelessly in love with this group I’ve only changed biases once, I’ve watched every episode of Shinhwa Broadcast at least five times, and I have completely forgotten who Super Junior is. They’re those kids that sing “Growl” right? (j/k!).
