So you wanna make a content pack? (Windows, TTR)
(Note: My microphone wasn't working properly so the guide will have to be in the form of a text post, sorry. If need be and I can get my microphone to work, then I will create a video too that follows this guide.)
A while back, I wanted to make a content pack for Toontown Rewritten. However, I had no idea how. So I asked around for like a month. No one wanted to tell me how. So I got pissed off and figured it out myself. BUT LUCKY FOR EVERYONE ELSE, I'm here to help you out. It may sound a lil' difficult but it's actually really really simple! There's just a LOT to cover. However, I'm sorry to say that this guide only applies to Windows users.
Image Editing Software (Photoshop, Gimp, Paint.NET, etc.)
VLC Media Player (To listen to TTR's .ogg files) (link)
Your computer's user name.
PART 1: Getting the Files in the First Place
This part is pretty simple, but it's also time consuming and essential to the entire process. Create a new folder on your desktop name it "a" (you can name it whatever you want but for the purpose of this guide it would be much easier to just follow me.) This will be your phase folder.
Keep that open, then open another folder and go to the Toontown Rewritten directory (Usually it is at C:\Program Files (x86)\Toontown Rewritten), copy all of the phase files, and paste them into the phase folder.
Now, go to the Panda3D directory (Usually at C:\Panda3D-1.8.1), click the bin folder, copy multify.exe, and paste that into your phase folder as well.
Alrighty, now that you've got your folder all set up, you're ready to start extracting the phase files. To do this, you need to open up the command prompt. With Windows 8, I use the charms sidebar, go to search, type cmd, then press enter. It's pretty much the same in all Windows OS's. You can also find it by going to Run, typing cmd, and pressing enter.
This is the command prompt. If you have something like this you're going in the right direction. Hurray. (For the record, if you didn't know your computer's user name, it should be right on the command prompt, where it says C:\Users\ followed by your user name. In my case it's Trevor.)
Now, in the command prompt, type the following, pressing enter after each line:
cd..
cd..
cd Users\[your user name]\Desktop\[your folder's name]
Obviously, replace the bracketed parts with your information. In my case, I would have to type "cd Users\Trevor\Desktop\a"
What this does is set the command prompt to do commands within your phase folder. Now, type the following then press enter:
If you are watching your phase folder while you do this, you'll notice that a subfolder will appear called "phase_3." The command above extracted the phase files so that you can view and edit them. Now, you need to retype that command for every other phase file. (They count up from 3 to 13, but don't forget about 3.5 and 5.5 as well.) Make sure you give it time to extract. It will act like it's frozen for a moment but it's just doing it's thing. The command prompt can only do one command at a time.
Once you extract the rest of the phase files, you're ready for Part 2!!
PART 2: Let's Insert Some Music
So by now your phase folder should look a lot like this. If you haven't peeked already, each of those folders contains various subfolders that have all of the game's files in it. Whoa cool huh. And you have the power to manipulate all that.
But right now, you're going to learn how to edit music. Toontown Rewritten's music files are different compared to Toontown Online's music files. When Disney was in charge, the music was all in that archaic .MIDI format which limited content pack creators their musical choices. But we're past those dark times now because Toontown Rewritten's music file's are in the .ogg format. Which is pretty much just like an .mp3 but better.
You need something that isn't Windows Media Player to listen to the .ogg files though. I use VLC Media Player (I even linked it above because it's just a general step up and I recommend it.)
Anyway, onto inserting your own music. Now, I'm sure you all have your music in .mp3 format or something that isn't .ogg. But worry not, because there is a simple solution. media.io is a website that will convert all your music files into .ogg (or .mp3, .wav, and .wma).
If you're fixing to get a song off of YouTube I suggest youtube-mp3.org. Both of these websites are virus-free and will not get you in trouble, I promise.
The background music in phase files are in the bgm subfolder of the audio folder. Some phase files don't have bgm and are just for sound effects. If you want to replace music in a phase file, you have to be sure that the music you're inserting has the exact same file name as what you want to replace it with.
So, for example, say I want to make the main theme of my content pack "Staying Alive" by The Bee Gees. I'd download it off of YouTube, convert it to .ogg, then go to the phase_3 folder, then the audio folder, then the bgm folder and rename the .ogg of Staying Alive to "ttr_theme" like it is in the phase files, paste it into the folder, and say yes to the new file overwriting the old one.
Pretty straight forward. Get your music, convert, replace with the correct file name. Sound effects work the exact same way. Moving on.
PART 3: Inserting Your Own Textures? SURE.
Now this part I'm not QUITE familiar with because it's been a while. Textures are found in the maps subfolder of each phase file. Most are in .jpg format (yeah what a shame but we have to deal with it.) The ones that aren't in .jpg format are another, really weird file type called .rgb and are always counterparts to another texture (usually with the same file name.)
I'm not too familiar with the .rgb files, so forgive me if I'm wrong. The best way I can describe them is they're for textures that have transparency, such as the trees we see in the playgrounds and streets, some interface stuff, etc. These .rgb files determine what parts are transparent and what parts aren't, since a normal .jpg doesn't do transparency. The .rgb files are exactly like the .jpg counterpart's texture, except that everything that should appear on screen is a solid white and anything you want to be transparent is a solid black.
Above is basket2.jpg from phase_3.5.
And this is the .rgb counterpart to basket2.jpg. Notice the space between the handle and the basket is black, meaning that it will be transparent in game.
Basically .rgb's are just white-on-black silhouettes.
White = Parts of the picture that will show
Black = Parts of the picture that will NO.
Pardon me I'm trying to be clever to keep your attention. Anyway...
To replace textures in the phase files with your own, it's similar to replacing music. Just make sure it's the correct file type (.jpg or .rgb) and it has the correct file name and just paste them into the phase files. Don't forget to edit the .rgb's to match your .jpg picture or it will turn out really wonky looking.
I think I did a good job explaining this part? Moving on to the final step.
PART 4: Putting Your Beautiful Work Into Toontown Rewritten.
You're almost done, this is the final stretch and it's an easy stretch.
Once you're done editing the phase files, open your command prompt back up. If you've exited since extracting, you will need to retype the following commands:
cd..
cd..
cd Users\[your user name]\Desktop\[your folder's name]
Again, insert the necessary information in the brackets. Now, for each phase file you edited, type in the following:
multify -c -f phase_x.mf "phase_x"
(Note: Make sure you replace both x's with the number of the phase file!)
You won't see much happening in your phase folder, but what it's doing is creating a phase.mf file in place of the old ones you extracted at the beginning of this process.
Once you're done typing in the multify command for each of your edited phase files, copy the phase.mf files (NOT THE FOLDERS.)
With the phase.mf files on your clipboard, go back to the Toontown Rewritten directory (Again, usually at C:\Program Files (x86)\Toontown Rewritten) and paste the phase.mf files into the resource folder within the Toontown Rewritten directory. If there is no resource folder, just create one. Make sure you name it as resource, in all lower case.
And with you pasting those phase files into that resource folder, you are DONE!!
Once you log into Toontown Rewritten it should have your content pack's textures and music. If you have any questions or trouble understanding, please let me know! I will be trying to get my microphone to work so I can make a video too, but in the mean time I will do my best to help you out in the form of words and screenshots.
