Qingming 2018. Each year, families turn up to ‘sweep’ the tombs and make offerings to their dearly departed. . I must confess that I haven’t been the most devout grandson... this being my first visit back since my grandma passed in 1988. . All three generations worth of us walked through the cemetery, past a line of enterprising vendors who set up makeshift drink stalls out of the back of their cars. In the background, there was a constant surreal chiming of the Paddle Pop ice cream tune (from the ice cream guy on a motorcycle). . The sun seared: a good reason for folks to bring umbrellas and even tents to take shelter under. Graves were de-weeded, tombstones were repainted, dirt was brushed away. . Offerings of food were laid out. My dad, uncle and cousin lit a cigarette each for grandma. Yes, she was a heavy smoker! The box they lugged along contained paper models of stuff we wanted to send to her in the afterlife. There was apparently even a ‘MacBook’ in there! Burning it signified sending the stuff to wherever she was. Hope she loves iOS as much as I do. . We finished, bought bottles of ice cold tangy nutmeg juice and went to visit grandpa at the columbarium (he was cremated, not buried). The day ended with cendol and beef kway teow. . Look around fences in Singapore for these flowers. The clitoria ternatea aka blue pea flower is used as a food coloring for Nonya kueh (cakes), rice, soaked as a drink and even a botanical in gin. Singapore Afterglow. From the URA on Singapore’s shophouses. ‘Shophouses—a historical source of delight and nostalgia—are a prevalent building type in Singapore’s architectural and built heritage. They are also commonly found throughout the historic cities of South East Asia. They are narrow, small terraced houses, with a sheltered ‘five foot’ pedestrian way at the front. These buildings can be used for both business and living. Constructed between the 1840s and the 1960s, these shophouses formed the majority of the pre-WW2 urban fabric of the old city centre as well as several other parts of Singapore.’ These ones are found along Telok Ayer St and most now house restaurants, bars, offices...with a few still clinging on to their old trades.

Nangqên, Qinghai was in the middle of caterpillar fungus season 🐛! Known as Yartsu gunbu in Tibetan, cordyceps in English and 冬虫夏草 in Chinese, these are caterpillar which have been infected by a fungal parasite. The parasite eventually takes over its host, mummifying it and sprouting a grass-like stall from its body. The Chinese prize these mummified caterpillars for its purported variety of health benefits (though the FDA has regulated its sales in the US)...and in some instances cost more than black truffle. Come summer, the hills around Tibet and Qinghai come alive with villagers scouting the grass for these valuable, erm, delicacies. (at Nangqên)
