This Garden Library Hideout in Zadní Třěbáň, Czech Republic was raised up for a dreamer, scientist and crazy philosopher. Twice built with passion, courage and resolve because of huge fire in 2012. Today, proudly stands and looks into the landscape.

There are only 3 things more depressing than this room. They are the sofa, carpet, and wallpaper in this room.

Will you talk to me about geckos? I'm very curious about them. Any and all species if you please
SURE THING let’s talk about a few TRUE GEMS
First is the Smith’s green-eyed gecko, Gekko smithii. I love this gecko. It’s a Big Dog, bigger than its cousin the tokay gecko (Gekko gekko) and has the string-of-pearls pupils that some suggest help camouflage it by disguising the eye a little bit.
Of course, the striking color of the gecko’s eyes perhaps blows that theory out of the water. It also has in my opinion the most beautiful eyes in the entire animal kingdom. The things I would do for a captive-bred Gekko smithii.
Another gecko that’s kind of unusual is the western banded gecko, Coleonyx variegatus. Despite looking like a leopard gecko (which is from central Asia), the western banded gecko is from the southwestern United States/northern Mexico.
It is disgustingly cute and shares many characteristics with leopard geckos, including general pattern and the true eyelids. They are also extremely badass. They can eat scorpions.
Another really great gecko is the vorax gecko, Gehyra vorax. Not to be confused with the similar Halmahera gecko, this is an extremely loud little critter. Like, small dog loud.
Sadly, this lovely creature is quite rare. There’s only one pair in the US, and they’re pretty elderly, so if you see a “vorax gecko” at a show, you’re buying a Halmahera. Sorry. You can distinguish them in a few different ways. The old standby is eye color; see how the eye up there is brown? A Halmahera will always have an eye color ranging from blue-green to jade green. Most voraxes will have gold-brown eyes. However, this isn’t always true; a halm can have a brown-gold eye sometimes, depending on locality. Really the best way to tell is the toes. Vorax toe pads are ENORMOUS when laid flat. In general, voraxes are much fatter than halms, too.
Then there’s this guy.
This is Nephrurus amyae, the rough knob-tailed gecko. I picked this knob-tailed gecko for two reasons. One, it’s the biggest of the knob-tailed geckos and I like big geckos. Two, its specific name refers to a herpetologist’s kid, and I’m a sucker for people naming species after their kids. The rough knob-tailed gecko has a truly wimpy tail; it is downright tiny, even for their genus. Here’s a few more knob-tailed geckos. I don’t particularly think any of them look like real animals.
Knob-tailed geckos are also important to the Superman mythos of all things; in the Lois and Clark continuity, an article about knob-tailed geckos is what got Clark Kent hired by the Daily Planet.
I hope you found this post about geckos somewhat informative!
