SF Zine Fest is thrilled to announce that our Guest of Honor for the 2018 fest is Bay Area-based Indian-American cartoonist and writer Nidhi Chanani, a 2012 Champion of Change honoree by the Obama administration. Nidhi's exceptional debut graphic novel Pashmina, a tale about the hardship and self-discovery that is born from juggling two cultures and two worlds, has received glowing reviews from numerous publications. Her second graphic novel, Jukebox, about two Muslim-American cousins, Shaheen and Tannaz in San Francisco, is slated to release in 2020. We're looking forward to Nidhi sharing her work with us during our annual Thinking Captions Zine Reading at San Francisco Public Library on August 28 and at SFZF2018 on September 2. Another surprise in our PO box today: a fat stack of the first in-color graffiti publication, @cancontrol! These issues date back to 1993 (back when they'd already been printing for seven years), which means they'll be some of the oldest pieces in our zine archive! An interview with Liz Mayorga

Where do you live?

Oakland, CA

How would you describe your work in 10 words?

I write stories inspired by my family, especially the incredibly strong women in my family. My zines and comics are slice of life stories that revolve around identity, history, and interpersonal relationships. I like mixing all of this with popular cultural references such as music, film, and art.

Why did you start making zines and how long have you been making them?

I started making zines because I wanted to do creative work again. I had stopped doing anything creative for a long, long time, and I especially wanted to practice my storytelling, using both words and images.

What are you most excited to have on your table this year?

Hopefully, I'll debut the first issue of my comic, Bread & Butter. If not, I'll be excited to share my last zine, Temastían.

Why do you like zines?

They are accessible to both creators and their audience, they allow creative freedom, and they have more of a personal touch.
