This robot is for a very sick little boy who suffers from eosinophilic esophagitis and anaphylactic shock syndrome. His obesity is a symptom and unrelated to why he must send a robot to school.Â
If there are even tiny particles of milk or peanuts in the air, he will end up in the emergency room. He is basically allergic to life and has been in intensive care twice in the last 2 years. This robot allows him to go to school. He can learn, interact with students and teachers, and make friends that arenât nurses and doctors.Â
Sometimes when I tell people I have to work from bed most days, they respond with, âI wish I could do that.â or âThat sounds awesome.â
I know this is an easy and obvious joke to make, and I am not admonishing anyone who has made that kind of joke. But I would like people to know that it is hurtful. One of the more hurtful things that is said to me, if Iâm being honest. Because I want nothing more than to get out of this bed. And I think this kid would like to play with his friends in real life rather than sending his robot to school. Our lives are not ideal, but we adapt them to make the best out of a bad situation.Â

The mistake people make when they talk about not being able to trust Wikipedia is in the implicit assumption that we could trust encyclopedias as infallible sources before Wikipedia. I like Wikipedia because I know it could be wrong. Regular encyclopedias can be wrong, too, but my guard was never up in the same way with them as it is with Wikipedia. I like Internet media specifically for the reason that Aaron Sorkin doesnât like it: because it makes it that much more difficult for me to have any illusions about the fact that the burden of critical thought is on me. I donât automatically trust bloggers because a group of people Iâve never met decided to give them a badge that says âreporterâ on it. I donât turn off my critical thinking because theyâve gotten to be some sort of âprofessionalâ. I have to judge them on the merits of their writing and history of thoughtfulness or thoughtlessness alone. That is a feature, not a bug, because we should never trust any news media outlet implicitly.

the worst part about finals is that it's a very convenient and totally understandable excuse to not deal with anything stressful or emotionally draining. Speeding ticket? I'll deal with that after finals. Parents talking about moving again? I'll deal with that after finals. Feeling really low-self-esteem and body hatred? I'll deal with that after finals. Relationship talking needs to happen? After finals.
well here i am less than 24 hours away from After Finals and all of that is going to hit me all at once when, demoralized (because that's how i come out of final exams), I finish my programming final and drive home in rush hour traffic.Â
I could really use a klonopin right now but I also need to finish fixing this lemon of a laptop and I'm going to need to actually complete some REM cycles tonight.Â
I just need everything to go away and my whole life to pick itself up and function at least a little bit.
