guys this is so dumb I canât lie đ Also I havenât thought through all the characters yet or really brought in the whole Captain Trips thing, so by all means, please chime in with more ideas if you have any! This au is deeply unserious, please have fun with it!
-
-So itâs Camp Boulder vs Camp Vegas
-Boulderâs like locally owned, funded by residents, a beloved place for many people. Small operation, but staff is hardworking and campers love it
-Vegas is owned by a big corporation. (Cough North Central Positronics if youâre a Dark Tower fan lol cough) Flagg, who works there, is so hyped to have âcreative control over this project,â which is to say he wants to make the worst camp ever and also kick out the Boulder camp so they can take Camp Boulderâs land (it has a slightly nicer lake)
Lloyd & Flagg:
-Lloyd is a criminal drifter who accidentally hits and kills his buddy Poke on Camp Vegas land. While trying to hide the body, he gets trapped in a cave where he starves for days. As heâs understandably freaking out over this situation, Flagg shows up, sets him free, and hides the body. This is his leverage for getting Lloyd to work there. If Lloyd slips up, Flagg will very easily reveal that heâs guilty of murder.Â
-So out of fear and also gratitude for saving his life, Lloyd allows Flagg to get away with some really awful shit (Flagg needed an employee that would allow this)
-It seriously disturbs him but heâs convinced himself that if he quits Flagg will take it out on the kidsâas if Lloyd hasnât been completely complacent with all the bad things Flagg is already doing to the kids
-Like Flagg has them physically fight, he wants to run his own little Lord of the Flies simulator or some shit this is hella fun for him
-Lloyd is a good counselor tho, the kids adore him. And he does manage to keep some semblance of order.Â
-When Flagg is finally arrested, Lloyd goes down with him
-In the epilogue, Flagg is given a plea deal + a lighter sentence for turning Lloyd in for killing Poke. Plus his company pays his bail and heâs basically allowed to walk free when all is said and done.
-Lloydâs campers visit him in jail tho which is sorta nice he supposes
-Idk man Iâd love for Lloyd to have a happy ending but it just doesnât seem true to his character to give him one đ
Larry:
-After getting one of his songs in the top 40, and also breaking up really badly with a girlfriend, Larry impulsively quit his job in LA and signed up to be the music counselor at some random summer camp where people will finally leave him alone
-Itâs a point of contention that heâs too selfish and impatient to work with others so heâs all like âfuck you watch me become a bunch of kidsâ favorite counselor eat my damn shortsâ
-And then he gets there and hates it until the kids start to grow on him. By the end, he cares more about directing the kidsâ band than he does about his own musical career, and is sorta shocked when he remembers that heâs actually lowkey famous outside of this camp in the middle of nowhere
-Lucyâs a nice, girl next door type counselor who he initially dismisses, but then discovers sheâs actually really fun to work with and eventually grows pretty smittenÂ
Franny:Â
-Working here to hide from her ex Jesse and also her mother
-Used to go to a different camp every summer, so itâs very nostalgic and allows her to imagine some normalcy while sheâs dealing with being pregnant and single and all.
-Harold is her friendâs kid brother who signed up as a junior counselor just because he heard she was. He follows her around a lot, making her pretty goddamn uncomfortable
-She hides from Harold in the camp wood shop where Stu works, and they hang out
-She also becomes pretty close to Lucy and Larry. She refuses to believe Larry is The Famous Larry Underwood though, which is mostly just to ragebait him
Nick:
-Started out as an on-site odd jobs/handyman type, sorta accidentally right-place-right-timed his way into being a head counselor and is generally not sure how he got here, much like how he was deputized so fast in the bookÂ
-Heâs awesome at it though. Heâs great at connecting with people, which is ironic considering his condition, but true.
-Heâs also one of the ones more initially riled up by Flagg and Camp Vegas. Everyone else is like âYo thatâs not a big deal man they canât actually get rid of us. Chillax.â And then Flagg gets Harold and Nadine to damage camp property and Nick ends up with a broken arm and is extremely vindicatedÂ
-He fills a whole notebook with âI TOLD YOU SOâ printed in all caps
-Nick also gets Tom Cullen a job at camp
Nadine:
-Worked at Camp Boulder for a long time before her boyfriend convinced her to work at his place insteadÂ
-Flagg manipulates her a lot and is generally The Worst. He fucks things up in the system so that it seems like everyone in Boulder hates Nadine when they very much donâtâlike setting it up so she works alone, sheâs always doing jobs no one else wants, it just generally seems on her end like sheâs being majorly excludedÂ
-Nadine tries to tell Larry about all the confusing stuff thatâs happening to her, but he tells her he canât handle it + she rejected him recently so she canât just play around like thatÂ
-So feeling isolated and confused, Nadine agrees to help Harold ruin everyone elseâs funÂ
-Once sheâs in Camp Vegas, sheâs technically co-director, but this is just a title. Mostly Flagg just has her hang out and do nothing, maybe read books to the kids. As she realizes how awful he is, she tries to resign, but Flagg wonât let her. She ends up unearthing the murder problem, which she uses as leverage to force him to finally give in and fire her
-Lloyd actually got along with her really well until finding out that she did that, and in feeling betrayed by her, heâs drawn closer to Flagg
-
Anyway thatâs all Iâve got for nowâIâd have to reread the book again to come up with more detailed ideas, but as it is, this au is so open and if you have an idea just add it!! Thereâs definitely parts of the book Iâve overlooked here that Iâd love to touch on, like Dayna, Trashcan Man, plenty of other main characters, and more.

The real impact of AI at university level that I've watched in real time is how so many students come onto courses now - including Masters level - who straight up don't know how to analyse/evaluate things anymore. They just accept whatever they first read/hear completely uncritically. Every time you point it out you have to coax them into Actually Thinking.
I've spotted a huge decline over the last two years. What's upsetting is how so many of our current third years have declined since their first year. I did a seminar with them the other day, on the topic of the environmental impacts of different diets. One guy told me confidently that there would be no additional agricultural lands if we all went vegetarian.
"Cool," I said. "What's your source for that?"
"I'm sure I read it," he said.
"Fair," said I, "go and look it up. Find an academic source, let's assess it to see if it's robust."
The first thing he did was go to Google, and then read the AI summary.
"That's not a source," I said. "Find me a source."
Five minutes later, he happily tells me that a Guardian article says so, and mentions the World Economic Forum.
"Okay," I said. "Neither of those are academic sources, and the WEF is secondary anyway. Go to Google Scholar, and find a journal article."
Ten minutes later, he tells me he can only find articles that say it's a very complex issue in spite of pop cultural received wisdom, and we don't actually know.
A THIRD YEAR. This man has a dissertation due in THREE MONTHS. This is a skill we taught him in first year, and it's all dribbled out of his ears in the quest for easy summaries from an autocomplete algorithm. And I dearly wish I could say he's an exception, but Jesus Christ, that would be a lie.
I'm currently writing a lecture for the second years for their research methods module, and I normally wouldn't need to do this. But I'm having to re-introduce them to the basic concepts of how to actually analyse findings rather than lazily take whatever they seem to say at face value. I'm trying to find a good paper that had Surprising findings, because I want to show them a research question and a set of results and then get them to speculate and research on why they found something so different, but that's a difficult thing to search for.
Ngh. Yelling at the choir here, I know, but NNNNGH
Basically it doesn't matter what religion it is, some people in it are going to be really kind and compassionate, and some people are going to be the worst fuckos on the planet. You just gotta learn to expect that range no matter which religion you're thinking of.
âItâs photoshoppedâ honestly in the age of AI that has a homey sort of nostalgia to it. Remember when people used to put effort into faking things?
oh gurl, you don't know the half of it. I remember 90s tabloid with headline my new neighbour is from Chernobyl and her baby has a tail! It was a poorly assembled collage of a baby's body with an ape's face and a lemur's tail all xeroxed into -100 contrast, people put effort of cutting clippings (granted with a rusty pair of scissors) but it counts

saw something about patricia possibly being a descendant of one of the witches and thatâs why the spell book came to her and i need a storyline of that immediately
Was driving with my grandmother and in broken English she says âno eyes⌠no nose⌠no face. Donât trust.â To which I looked around wildly in search of this omen of ill portend.

truly and genuinely the spider-noir show feels like they genetically engineered the spider-man spin-off equivalent of crack cocaine in a lab for me personally. It's the 1930s. nicolas cage is 60 years old. he's a private investigator. He's a weird little freak. He's cracking bones you didn't even know existed. He watches movies to figure out how to be more normal. He is always getting knocked on his ass. it gets actually freaky and nasty with the spider bite symptoms. The suit is So Many Textures. It's the closest we've ever been to body horror. It's live action and in black and white AND the black and white looks good. this is doing the same shit to me the tom hardy venom films did
