successes like these should feel celebratory — but like most days, freeing another widow came with its own wave of guilt and pain. yelena had to stand there and bare witness to how their world came crashing down on them, watch their faces crumble as they began to piece together all they’d endure and been forced to do. it was unpleasant as fuck to witness and she still didn’t feel like she was doing enough to help them all.

now, hours later, the exhausted blonde into a humble abode, wincing with each step she took. freeing the widows didn’t come without its challenge and the biggest was their unrelenting drive to kill anything in their path. even their sisters. yelena was definitely going to feel the pain of three forceful kicks to the ribs for days, perhaps weeks, to come.

“ hey. ” she grunted out as she limped into the kitchen, her eyes zeroing in on alexei. the focus didn’t last on the man long. instead, she made a beeline towards the refrigerator, pulling it open with a laborious huff before collecting what she so craved: a bottle of beer. by passing any tools, she instead slammed the neck against the kitchen counter, hardly flinching at the noise as the top broke away.

she brought the drink to her lips, chugging eagerly as she slumped against the fridge. “ — where’s mama ? ”

a two-note whistle. it was once a calling card of sorts: one to signify an arrival, a welcome back, an i’ll see you soon. . . now, it felt like an incomplete lullaby. like a puzzle with a missing piece. an action that once served to remind yelena that she wasn’t alone was now the very same that reminded her of all she’d lost.

“ какая гребаная шутка. ” the blonde muttered to herself, bracing the granite tombstone between her manicured fingertips as she spoke. perhaps it was crude of her to exchange curses at her sister’s grave but she’d like to think that nat would get a big laugh out of it, wherever the hell people went after death.

her head pressed against the cool surface of the stone as silence danced through the air. she forced herself to control her shaky breaths, stubbornly squeezing her eyes shut so that warm tears wouldn’t threaten to spill. pain only makes us stronger. yelena repeated her mother’s words like a broken record. but even then, she wasn’t sure if she could find it in her heart to believe it.

a low whine escaped from her dog, perched by the tree as her sad eyes watched her owner. the sound was enough to break her from her reverie. pulling her head away, yelena dabbed at the tears with the back of her wrist, sniffling as she stood to her feet. jeweled fingers drummed against the top of the grave for a moment before retracting for a moment. a silent goodbye of sorts.

“ c’mon, fanny. ” yelena spoke through her thick accent. “ time to go home. ”
