TL;DR
Abandoned at birth due to his appearance, the baby was left in the maternity ward until he started getting too big for the hospital cot.
This is where he got his ‘name’, a shortened version of ‘the baby in incubator number seven’.
He was almost a ‘mascot’ to the nurses, but no-one wanted to take him in.
Abandoned a second time, Seven ended up in a shallow tub of water, left outside a veterinary office.
He spent a couple of years at the vets. He ended up hiding out in the back, only ever surfacing late at night but finally getting to see some of the outside world.
Sending Seven off to Nathaniel Essex’s home for mutants was actually a very difficult decision, but the thought it would be for the best. Let him have a normal life.
Seven did not have a normal life.
FULL HISTORY
Seven was never properly named. Seven was never properly loved.
Seven’s mother was horrified at the thing she’d given birth too. His father wanted it dead. Not knowing what to do, they left the baby at the hospital, running away in the middle of the night refusing to give it anything. Not even their names on it’s birth certificate.
The nurses also didn’t know what to do with it either. One nurse, Nurse Weathers, was the only reason the baby ever survived past infancy and the first to finally call it something other than it. He was called ‘the mistake’, ‘the oddity’ and most kindly ‘the baby in incubator number seven’.
A bit of a mouthful so it eventually turned into simply calling him ‘Seven’. It stuck and was even nearly said with fondness.
He spent a couple of years as an oddity in the hospital until he grew too big to be get in a small box. He was almost a ‘mascot’ to the nurses, but no-one wanted to take him in when admin and hospital higher ups said they had to figure out what to do with ‘Seven’.
Abandoned for a second time, Seven ended up in a shallow tub of water, left outside a veterinary office, except this time he at least had a name in the water logged letter left with him.
He spent a couple of years at the vets, another oddity, another ‘mascot’. He ended up hiding out in the back, only ever surfacing late at night but finally getting to see some of the outside world. It was here that the learned to read and write, and shocked everyone when he spoke quite eloquently. Seven became quite knowledgeable in animal anatomy and medicine, a free extra hand around the place and an absolute favourite amongst the cats.
When one of the staff at the veterinary office heard about the orphanage set up by Nathaniel Essex, she called the hotline immediately. They all agreed Seven could finally have a good life. Finally be accepted and looked after in a way she could never manage.
His early years turned into a haze because of the treatment and experimentation he suffered at the hands of Nathaniel Essex. He was lonely and unused to a large amount of human interaction and he was considered a low-risk around the facility.
He was pliable, he knew nothing besides pain and suffering and saying ‘thank you’ for his awful treatment. Seven was one of the few mutants who could walk freely around the facility (under supervision) and ultimately, he helped facilitate the great escape.
It was never made clear to Seven exactly how old he was or when he was born. No-one was expecting him to speak, let alone show human level intelligence so it simply never came up. Nathaniel Essex ended up making an ‘educated’ guess but it was difficult to place as they couldn’t judge his growth by any normal standards. His stunted social and emotional growth made him almost childlike in his naivete but his physical build makes him appear much older (beneath the scales). Essex used this kindly nature and desperate need for approval to his advantage —and it’s something the other Essex escapees also took advantage of.
