Wei Wuxian: 我曾經把你當做我畢生知己 / I had once thought that, in my lifetime, you would be the one who knew me.

Lan Wangji: 現在仍是 / I still am.

I’ve seen various translations of the phrase “畢生知己” as “lifelong confidante” or “soulmate,” and I’m always so torn because these are both fine translations but like, not quite there

But first off, I don’t think it’s out of character for Lan Wangji to “leave Wei Wuxian alone” when ppl are out there still who want to harm WWX because that’s? what LWJ has always been about? He’s there to support WWX and lend him his support, but he’s always respected WWX’s wishes. He never wanted to change WWX (even if WWX read some of his offers pre-death in this less kind way). He knows who WWX is and respects WWX’s free spirit, he never wanted to confine him. Or okay maybe for a hot second he did, but we’re well past the “come back to Gusu with me” point now, that was a whole lifetime ago.

Plus, WWX is capable of defending himself. He may not be as ridiculously strong as he was before, and he sure gets injured, but I think a lot of the times we see in present time are more cases where he gets injured because he’s not willing to go all-out and really fight the person who injures him, or there’s some other reason he has to hold back. He’s not a damsel in distress? So it’s not a matter of “how could LWJ leave him defenseless”; WWX made a choice, and it doesn’t happen to align with LWJ’s choice, but they both understand that because a core value they share is that crucial second part of their lantern promise - following their conscience.

I just feel like CQL writes a very good and actually very mature relationship with WangXian, where they’re individual people with individual lives and they each understand and respect that, and they’re continually choosing to come together and make their relationship work.

re: Lan Wangji staying to become Chief Cultivator… I don’t really think it’s a stretch, based on his CQL character arc. We know LWJ has very strong values and a strong sense of justice, but also a strong sense of responsibility. From a very young age, he was helping shoulder some of the burden of being Sect Leader with his brother. And with the cultivation world left in such turmoil as it was at the end of CQL, it… doesn’t not make sense to me that LWJ would step up. He’s not one to shirk responsibilities. (Plus I lowkey think he DOES make sense for the cultivation world to choose as Chief Cultivator, because for all of the talk about how his reputation as Hanguang-Jun would be besmirched by association with WWX, it… never really is? His reputation is a byproduct of his strength of character and a reflection of the strength of his values; it’s not something that he puts additional effort into cultivating (hah). As such, who else to turn to as a bastion of light and hope in a dark time?) This is where I wonder if it’s more a cultural point; I may not actively practice “collectivist culture” values, but I still feel like I get it, in that the needs of an individual do not outweigh the needs of a community.

I think I actually would have disliked it if LWJ *had* gone with WWX that first time; it would have left me unsatisfied because there’d be a sense of something unresolved with the world, of a duty left unfulfilled. Because they’re NOT retreating from the world; they’d still be living in it, and it doesn’t make sense to me that either of them would be satisfied leaving the cultivation world in turmoil and not trying to do anything to help. 

The bit that stuck to me though, as I have commented to the OP of that post, because I also do agree with them in a way, is the Man-Eating Ridge scene. LWJ reluctantly parting ways, and then waiting for WWX outside on the bridge after. It's mostly based on my 1st impression of the ending I guess, but when that happened, I kept thinking back to that scene, and it's basically a feeling I couldn't honestly shake off. But it's just a bit of the whole thing.
