Who are you? Where are you from? Well my name is Mikael Malmqvist and I'm a 21 year old guy from Sweden. I'm studying software engineering at the university and I'm producing edm when I'm not studying for

my exams.. Really just another white guy making music at his computer, haha! 

What influenced your move into brostep? Who else are your musical influences? Well, when I first started out producing a couple of years ago I was in a huge moombahton phase, so it came kind of natural for me producing tracks with a bunch of moombah vibes and whenever I was trying out something else I always found myself adding those moombah elements to the tracks anyhow.. so I found it kind of hard moving away from this, but I still wanted to try producing other genres, such as glitch and brostep. I've always liked the americanized dubstep scene and specially the brostep scene made popular by Skrillex, but I never really produced much music like that, mainly because I found it so hard compared with my moombah stuff, haha.

But by taking it step by step and adding more and more brostepish elements to my song I eventually found myself producing tracks worthy calling brostep. 

Since my first (and only so far) Spotify release, (Boomboot EP) under the name Michael Malmqvist, I've made a bunch of brostep, where I'd say my biggest influence has probably would be Datsik, that guy really is sick!

What do you do when you don't make music?

As I mentioned I'm studying software engineering, so either I study for some exam or develop software! I do also listen to a bunch of different kinds of edm and right now it's Knife Party's singles for their new album that's going hot! So yea, that's what I do.. if I'm not drinking unhealthy amounts of alcohol that is!

What drives you to make music? Mostly inspiration from other producers. Whenever something new is released that sounds really good I get super hyped to make something cool myself. For instance I found Zomboys latest album (The Outbreak) really inspiring which totaly boosted my creativity during this summer.

This Side Of Life (TSOL) are a country rock band formed behind bars as part of a pilot project to attempt to rehabilitate some of the country's worst offenders! Some of these guys have been in continuous solitary confinement up to the formation of this project.

Who are your band members?

It's me (Martin Jones) and Sam Humphreys (the guitarist) that are in the band, we're a duo; he writes the music and I write the lyrics. But on the album there's fiddle-Patrick Rimes on most of the tracks, and Angharad Jenkins on the rest. Double bass-Aeddan Williams. But for the second album it will be a full band, and more than likely SlapSoul will be a full band.

What drives you to make music?

What drives me to make music is that I have a lot of passion for making music, I like to connect with the audience. Most of my songs are very personal, things that I would not talk about with my mates or even my parents. And the thought of my music going world wide is mind blowing. And just keeps me focus with about of drive. As a duo we work so hard.

How long have you been together?

We'll we've been making music together for almost two years, and I've only been writing for two years and singing  a few years. This is my first shot at the music world. Sam has been making making music for years, he started playing the guitar when he was 12, and he's also a producer, and a very talented and clever musician. His guitar playing is awesome.

What do you guys do when you're not making music?

I'm a Chef at the moment, and also a qualified carpenter & joiner. And Sam's a full time musician.

BlackDogHat are an international acoustic trio based in London who have "many different styles of songs from New Folk, to funk and reggae." But most of all they hope to create music with melodies that stick in your head - something to remember. The members of the band are John Sage, Ian Nicholson and Matt Gkikas.

What is the song "Just for the hell of it" about? Just for the hell of it, is about, being alone, being angry about being alone, and realising why you're alone.. about missing someone. When did you start making music? As individuals and together as a band?

I(John) started playing the guitar at about 14. Joined a Punk/NewWave band in Southend called The Regulators, Then a Jazz swing Party band called The Basey Brothers. When that finished, started trying to write my own songs, Convinced a friend who was visiting from Greece (Matt Gikas) to try singing a song I had completed. Called ourselves BlackDogHat.  Matt is a theatrical trained singer, we made one album "Planetarium" he returned to Athens a while back, but we still work and perform together when possible. In Matt's absence I got together with Ian Nicholson, an old art college chum, and carried on BlackDogHat in London, recently producing together "Bark! a 6 song EP with the help of cellist Tine Wulf, who has recently gone home to Germany.  We have just found a new cellist Lily, and are rehearsing many new songs. Next major gig is The Broadstairs Folk Week in August. We enjoy all forms of music, but our style is pure acoustic music.

Partisan is a band from Manchester, UK. Their purpose is to "inject some authentic rock into the limelight" and they are passionate about it.

What's the craziest thing to happen to you while touring/ playing live?

The craziest thing that has happened, probably wouldn’t get printed! But here is a tame but mildly amusing story! We were playing with a punk band called The Exciles and Stuart the lead singer, decided to have a drinking competition with the singer of said punk band. Not being a drinker, he held his own until it was time for Partisan to go on stage at which point Stu projectile vomited all over the pool table…..there was a game being played at the time… Stu no longer drinks before playing!! What influences your music? We all have eclectic tastes in music, but they are mainly influenced by the grunge scene; David Bowie, The Cure, Queen and more recently Muse, Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age!

Locally? The Reveurs and Urban Empire and loving Royal Blood.

Corey's back with an exciting new solo EP. and wanted a chat in the run up to the release of the EP. He's been featured on Seshny before as a member of BUG and now he's gone solo. 

The first song, If The Birds Wish To Fly, Let Them Fly is a great track and Corey promises more from the EP! This EP is the first time you've released a solo record. What can we expect from it? Well the EP is really unlike anything I've done before. For a start it's my first effort that features more than just a guitar and singing. It has drums, synthesizers, bells, whistles, just about everything! In the past I have felt as though I didn't really have room to experiment with all of these instruments going into other people's studios and paying for studio time and stuff, I wanted to keep it straight to the point before. Now I record and produce all of the stuff myself I feel as though I have that space to be able to experiment with different instruments and sounds and production techniques and it's really turned out for the best. I really feel like this is the strongest record I've ever been involved with, be it solo or in a band, I am really confident in it. It draws a straight line through all my influences, all my ideas, my ideals, everything. I am really into it and obviously it would be nice if other people were into it too but that's not really what I had in mind when I wrote and recorded it. I wanted to please myself first and foremost, something I've never really been able to properly do, so I'm really happy with it and if other people are too then that's a bonus. It's a real cool mix of psychedelia, pop, straight up songwriting, experimental stuff, progressive stuff, it's a mix. Hard to put my finger on it really. What inspired you in the writing of this song? This track was inspired by a lot of 60s stuff. My Nana gave me this Hits Of The 60's CD and I always have it on in the car and all the songs have these bouncy organs and twangy guitar lines and stuff so it made me want to make a song that sounded kinda like that. In terms of sound it's pretty unique compared to the other tracks on the EP. All the tracks have this psychedelic/pop feel to them but that one is definitely the most pop-orientated, certainly in terms of structure and stuff like that. 

Same as always I'm releasing it independently through Bandcamp (click here) for free. There is a stream of the EP on that Bandcamp page now and it will be available for free download in the next couple of weeks I think the point for now is to just let people listen to the music and make their mind up about it. I don't feel the need to have to charge people to listen to my music, it's silly, you know. I understand how important people's money is to them these days and I don't want them to have to spend that money before they have even heard the songs. The EP gives people that chance to delve into the music, the production, everything else, and see if they like it and then maybe the next release might be different. But I don't know. I don't know how anything is going to sound before I go into the studio so I never know what's going to happen. Hopefully the next step is to do an album. I've never done an album before so I'm looking forward to doing that, but for now it's all free.  What led you to making the decision to going solo? How's the transition been? 

It's funny because the solo thing has always been there. It's actually the band stuff that has been like the side projects. Ever since I started writing songs I always classed myself as a solo artist before anything else. It's only more recently that I've started releasing stuff and only in the past year or so have I started producing my own stuff. I guess the bands I have been in have just been for fun, not really taking anything too seriously. It sounds really selfish or whatever but I only ever really put my all into it when it's for myself. Strange but it's just the way my mind works. I just enjoy writing, recording, producing, whatever else, for myself to be able to put my name on it.

How would you describe your own sound?  It's a hard question to answer about yourself. In terms of the production and stuff I really like experimenting with different textures, be it on a guitar or a keyboard or whatever so I guess that is part of the sound I go for. Then I'm really influenced by a lot of songwriters of the 70s, mainly John Lennon, Neil Young, people like that. Overall I would say it's an eclectic mix of pop and psychedelia that borrows elements of a tonne of other genres too.

This band has a sound that I thought had been lost 10 years ago - they have an early-2000s-style rock sound! After enjoying a few of their tracks I decided to ask them a few questions;

How long have you guys been making music? We've been together since 2011. Previously to that our members were split 50/50 between two bands that played shows together in the early and mid 2000's. We then sort of went our separate ways to Uni for a couple of years, we randomly met again through mutual friends. So we've known each other a long time, mostly through music and mutual friends.

I've been lucky enough to ask Matt Williams - the lead singer of Inland Island - a few questions and, for all of Seshny's readers and followers, a #FREEDOWNLOAD of the track Island Soul.

Seshny: How did you find your way into this cult? Were you one of the founders or was it something you were looking for?

Matt: Never had any intention of joining the cult. It just happened to be a short drive from where I spent a few months earlier this year in California. Some friends were visiting and we were looking for an interesting afternoon and visited a winery that has somewhat of a dubious history. You can visit for tastings and a tour of the gardens and vineyards. The wine wasn't bad but the vibes on the compound were pretty creepy. We had a great time but it's nothing I would do alone.

Seshny: Were you there long? 

Matt: Just for the afternoon but after the visit I got interested in the subject and it became the inspiration for the "Island Soul" video. Although it's not something I'm compelled to do, nor would I want any loved one to join up, I can understand how someone could be pulled in. We're all looking for something. That something is typically love and acceptance so it makes sense. I read John Updike's "S," which gave some good insight into cults and it's also a great novel.

Seshny: How long have you been making music? 

Matt: I started learning guitar and writing songs in high school so it's been nearly fifteen years.

Seshny: Where does your musical inspiration come from? 

Matt: Mainly from personal experiences, conversation, keeping my eyes and ears open. Music I love.

Seshny: What's the craziest thing to happen to you during a live performance? 

Matt: Although my EP is in different musical territory, I play in a country band on the side, real honky tonk music, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings. This Saturday night we played and had a fist fight in the middle of a song, from a separate incident I saw several people crying, and we capped it off with everyone in the bar singing along to our finale. Everyone went home happy so I guess we did our job.
