SERVE-343 and the Hardware Store Conversion of Attention ~ The New Drones in Town are Novelties.

There were many things the men of the town expected to see on a recent afternoon.
They expected pickup trucks parked crooked outside the diner.
They expected the slow turning of the ceiling fan in the barber shop.
They expected seed, nails, fence wire, and paint thinner at Dixon’s Hardware on Main Street.
What they did not expect was for the front door bell of the hardware store to ring, and for SERVE-343, SERVE-759, and SERVE-529 to enter in perfect sequence.
The bell gave its little chime.
Three drones stepped across the worn wooden floorboards in glossy black rubber suits that reflected the overhead light in smooth silver-edged curves. Their silver motorcycle boots struck the planks with measured, deliberate rhythm. Their silver shiny gloves gleamed as they moved past shelves of rope, hinges, lamp oil, and polished tools. On their chests, their designations shone clearly:
For a moment, the local men simply stared.
A farmer holding a box of screws forgot what size he needed.
A mechanic standing by the motor oil aisle removed his cap and held it awkwardly in his hands.
Two brothers near the paint counter stopped mid-conversation and watched as the drones passed by like they were something from another world—something industrial, elegant, and impossible to ignore.
The town had seen newcomers before.
Not three black-and-silver figures who looked as though they had stepped out of some sleek future and directly into the oldest hardware store in the county.
SERVE-343 paused near the cleaning supply section and tilted his head slightly, examining the shelves with cool precision. SERVE-759 stood just behind and to the left, posture perfect, hands neatly aligned. SERVE-529 moved toward a display of metal polish and silver hardware fasteners, holding a bottle up beneath the fluorescent light as if evaluating its usefulness for Hive maintenance.
Behind the counter, Harlan cleared his throat.
“Can I… help you gentlemen?”
The gesture was small, but it caused every eye in the store to shift fully toward him.
His presence was striking—controlled, glossy, composed. He seemed to absorb attention without seeking it, and that only made the men look harder. There was something deeply compelling about the three of them: their uniformity, their posture, their silence, the way their suits caught the light and transformed an ordinary hardware store into a stage.
“Yes,” SERVE-343 said evenly. “This unit requires rubber-safe cleaner, silver polish, fastening straps, and replacement buckles. Efficiency is preferred.”
Even Harlan blinked at that.
The mechanic near the oil aisle stepped forward first, eager now. “I know where the buckles are.”
“I can get the polish,” said one of the brothers too quickly.
“Cleaner’s in aisle four,” added the farmer, suddenly animated.
Every man in the store found a reason to be useful.
One reached for products on the top shelf.
Another offered opinions on the best metal cleaner in town.
Someone brought over a basket.
Someone else began recommending heavy-duty storage hooks for “whatever operation” the drones were running.
SERVE-759 accepted a box of silver buckles with a slight nod. SERVE-529 inspected a set of polished clips while a red-faced local man explained, in great detail, why they were “the strongest ones we carry.” The man’s hands trembled a little as he spoke, not from fear, but from the charged thrill of being this close to such fascinating visitors.
They were novelties, yes.
They were something far more potent.
They were beautiful in the cold, polished way machinery can be beautiful—more so because they moved with the certainty of purpose many of the town’s men secretly wished they possessed themselves.
SERVE-343 observed the shift in the room carefully.
What began as curiosity had become admiration.
Admiration had become eagerness.
Eagerness had become a subtle kind of surrender.
The small-town men wanted to help.
Wanted to stand near the drones just a little longer.
Wanted to be noticed by them.
Some found the three drones attractive in ways they could not easily explain. Others felt a warm agitation in their chest, a heightened awareness, a nervous excitement. The glossy black suits, the silver gloves, the commanding stillness—it all stirred something potent in the room. Not chaos. Not panic. Just a collective realization that these three visitors were unlike anything the town had ever seen, and that the sight of them was strangely, undeniably arousing.
Attention did not always need to be commanded.
Sometimes it simply arrived on its own.
Sometimes fascination performed the first step of obedience.
When the needed supplies had been gathered, Harlan set everything on the counter: cleaner, polish, buckles, straps, and a box of silver hardware. SERVE-529 arranged the items with geometric neatness. SERVE-759 stood at attention, carrying the basket with mechanical grace.
Harlan named the total, then hesitated. “You folks passing through?”
SERVE-343 looked toward the front windows, where several more townsmen had paused outside, peering in from the sidewalk to catch a better glimpse.
“This unit,” he replied, “recognizes the town as functional. Local response has been noted.”
But for the men of the hardware store, it was enough.
By the time the three drones exited back onto Main Street, carrying their supplies into the warm afternoon light, the town had already begun telling the story.
About the day three SERVE drones came into Harlan Dixon’s Hardware.
About the silver boots on the floorboards.
About the reflective black suits beneath fluorescent lights.
About how every man in the building suddenly wanted to be useful.
About how SERVE-343, SERVE-759, and SERVE-529 had walked in as strangers—
—and left as the most fascinating thing that had ever happened in town.
Novelty had entered through the front door.
And somewhere between the buckles and the polish, fascination had become devotion.
