I know a lot of the things we have done in human sight are impossible to believe.”

Construction of the Empire State Building was one of the most remarkable feats of the 20th century. It took only 410 days to build, by 3,400 workers, many of them desperate for work at the height of the Depression. The work force was made up largely of immigrants, along with hundreds of Mohawk Indian iron workers.’ 1931.

In January 1973, Edmund Kemper picked up a hitchhiker and murdered her, then drove her body back home, hid it in his bedroom closet, and went to sleep. The next morning, after his mother left for work, he removed the corpse, had sex with it, then placed it in his bathtub and dismembered it with a Buck knife and axe.

The ringleader, Lt. Michael Smith, who had been previously been accused of brutality on at least four occasions, was charged with murder. Two other guards, 43-year-old Matthew Davidson and 31-year-old Joseph Sanders, were also charged.

Christopher Dankovich, at age 15, stabbed his mother 111 times to death on April 24, 2005. He was sentenced to 25 to 37 years in 2006.

On 14 February 1929, St Valentine’s Day, four men disguised as police walked into a garage on North Clark Street, Chicago, lined up the seven people inside against the wall and shot them dead. At the height of the 1920s - the era of Prohibition, which was dominated by gangsters - the murder of seven men stunned the nation. It was later revealed that Chicago mobster Al Capone ordered the ‘hit’ but that the real target, mob leader George ‘Bugs’ Moran, escaped the carnage. Ultimately, the St Valentine’s Day Massacre turned the American public against urban folk heroes like Al Capone and ushered in a new era - the Depression.

Aileen Wuornos (born February 29, 1956) was an American serial killer. The movie “Monster” is supposed to be based on her life. Her father, Leo Arthur Pittman, was a child molester who served time in Kansas and Michigan mental hospitals. He died by hanging while in prison in 1969. Wuornos’ mother abandoned Aileen and her brother in 1960 and left them in the care of their maternal grandparents. Wuornos claimed that her grandfather physically and sexually abused her as a child and that her grandmother was an alcoholic. She also said to have had sex with several partners upon the age of 12, including her brother Keith. Wuornos became pregnant at the age of 14 and delivered her son at a Detroit maternity home on March 23, 1971. The child was put up for adoption soon after. Wuornos began to work as a prostitute while still in school. She soon dropped out of school to work the streets full-time, earning her way as a teenage hooker and drifted across the country.In May 1974 Wuornos was jailed in Colorado for drunk driving and firing a gun from a moving vehicle. In 1976 she married 76-year-old yacht club president Lewis Gratz Fell. They were divorced six weeks later. From 1977 to 1989 Wuornos was arrested several times, used different names and made her way to Florida. Wuornos’ first victim was store owner Richard Mallory in Palm Harbor, Florida. According to Wuornos Mallory had sexually assaulted her on November 30 in 1989 after tying her to the car. She killed six more men between June 1990 and November 1990. After being identified and put in custody she made a full confession and cited self-defense for Mallory’s murder. She was convicted of his murder in January 1992. Although it was later uncovered that Mallory had served 10 years for violent rape in another state, Wuornos was never given a re-trial. Wuornos received six death sentences for the other murders. On October 9, 2002 she was executed.

It is believed that as many as 20 young boys lost their lives at the hands of Gordon Stewart Northcott on the infamous ‘Murder Farm’ in Riverside County, South Carolina. From 1926, Northcott, with the assistance of his mother and nephew, would abduct boys, hide them on his farm and then rent them out to local pedophiles. When Northcott was done with his victims they were murdered and their flesh was then dissolved in quick lime. Northcott’s sadistic crimes went on until he was arrested in 1928.

Pamela Bass was Jeffrey Dahmer’s neighbor at the Oxford apartments in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Bass described Jeffrey as a very nice neighbor, always sharing things with others and overall friendly. He once gave Bass his old red couch. After Dahmer’s arrest, people went to Bass’s house and offered to pay her $50 to sit on the couch once owned by Dahmer.

“He just stood there and grinned. I shooed him out of the room and took the implements back down to the kitchen and told my mother about it. I remember thinking at the time that I was the only one who thought it was strange. Nobody did anything.”

Caylee Marie Anthony (August 9, 2005 – 2008) was a two-year-old American girl who lived in Orlando, Florida with her mother, Casey Marie Anthony, and her maternal grandparents, George and Cindy Anthony. On July 15, 2008, she was reported missing by Cindy, who said she had not seen Caylee for 31 days. Her remains were discovered Dec. 11, 2008. Casey was charged with first degree murder and found not guilty.
