Walpurgis Night: The Witches’ Night and the Arrival of SpringWalpurgis Night, also known as Walpurgisnacht or Saint Walpurga’s Eve, is a traditional European festival celebrated on the night of April 30 and into May 1. It marks the transition from winter to spring and blends ancient pagan customs with Christian traditions. While it carries a reputation as the “Night of the Witches,” today it is largely a joyful celebration of the awakening of nature, filled with bonfires, music, and community gatherings.
en.wikipedia.orgOrigins and HistoryThe roots of Walpurgis Night go back to pre-Christian pagan festivals that celebrated fertility, the end of winter, and the coming of summer. In many parts of northern and central Europe, people lit bonfires on the eve of May 1 to purify the land, protect livestock, and drive away evil spirits. These customs are closely related to the Celtic festival of Beltane, which also falls around May 1 and focuses on fire, fertility, and the union of opposites.
britannica.comThe Christian layer was added later. The holiday takes its name from Saint Walpurga (also spelled Walburga or Walpurgis), an 8th-century Anglo-Saxon nun and abbess who worked as a missionary in what is now Germany. She was known for her healing powers and was invoked for protection against witchcraft, rabies, pests, and other afflictions. Her relics were moved to Eichstätt on May 1, 870, and this date became her feast day. Over time, the Church associated the existing pagan spring rites with the saint to ease the conversion of local populations.
en.wikipedia.orgIn German folklore, Walpurgis Night became known as Hexennacht (“Witches’ Night”). Legend says that witches from across the land would fly on broomsticks or goats to gather on the Brocken, the highest peak in the Harz Mountains, for a wild sabbath with dancing, feasting, and dark revelry. This dramatic image was later immortalized in literature, most famously in Goethe’s Faust.
en.wikipedia.orgTraditions and CelebrationsCustoms vary across countries, but several elements remain common:Bonfires: Large fires are lit to symbolize the warmth of spring, purify the air, and scare away evil spirits or witches. In some regions, people symbolically burn effigies of witches.
Noise and Protection: In Germany, people once made loud noises, rang bells, and played pranks to ward off malevolent forces. Blessed herbs or foliage were hung on houses and barns for protection.
Music and Dancing: In Sweden (where it is called Valborg), communities gather for choral singing of traditional spring songs, speeches welcoming the season, and bonfires.
Festive Atmosphere: In Finland, the celebration merges with May Day (Vappu) and includes picnics, balloons, mead (sima), and student parties. Costumes, flowers, and general merriment are common.
In modern times, Walpurgis Night is often a cheerful spring festival rather than a fearful one. People dress up, enjoy outdoor activities, and celebrate the longer days and blooming nature.
britannica.comWalpurgis Night vs. BeltaneAlthough Walpurgis Night and Beltane share the same seasonal timing and many fire-related customs, they are not identical:Beltane is the Gaelic (Celtic) festival focused primarily on fertility, the union of the God and Goddess, and the start of summer.
Walpurgis Night has stronger Germanic roots and a more pronounced association with witches and Christian saint veneration.
The two festivals have influenced each other over centuries, and in contemporary pagan and neopagan communities, they are sometimes celebrated together or seen as complementary.
ancient-origins.netCultural Significance TodayWalpurgis Night reminds us of Europe’s rich layered history — how ancient seasonal observances survived and transformed under Christian influence. It embodies the eternal human desire to mark the changing seasons, seek protection from unseen forces, and rejoice in the return of light and life.Whether viewed through the lens of folklore (as a night when the veil between worlds thins), history (as a Christian-pagan synthesis), or simple seasonal joy, Walpurgis Night continues to captivate with its blend of mystery, fire, and springtime renewal. In many places, especially the Harz Mountains in Germany, special events, guided tours, and theatrical performances still keep the old legends alive, inviting both locals and visitors to experience a touch of magic on the threshold of May. If you’re interested in modern ways to celebrate or the connection to other spring festivals, let me know — I can expand on specific traditions or rituals!

Sergei Rosen's Roads Through the Looking Glass.
In winter, the forest resembles a sentence,
Pronounced slowly and muffled.
Here, snow is not light, but a form of muteness,
And darkness is its only ear.
The trees stand tall, enduring the gap
Between themselves and the meaning of distance.
They retain the habit of not growing
Toward hopes and justifications.
The path meanders, like a thought in the night,
Seeking a way out, knowing it won't be found.
A step confirms: the body is still here,
But the echo is gone, and will not return.
Here, loneliness is not pain, not fear,
But a climate that has outlived man.
Breathing is possible, living is already difficult,
Like February, stretched out over a century.
The sky hangs like the ceiling of a prison,
Where time is taught to run slowly.
A star is just a dot on the wall,
A reminder of a past escape.
And if there is a way out, then
It coincides with the point of origin:
The same forest, the same crunch of footsteps,
And the darkness that promised nothing.

Imbolc: The Pagan Festival of Light and Renewal
Celebrated on February 1st or 2nd in the Northern Hemisphere, Imbolc is a pagan festival deeply rooted in the Celtic wheel of the year. It marks the midpoint between the winter solstice (Yule) and the spring equinox (Ostara), a time when the first, subtle signs of spring begin to stir beneath the mantle of winter. The name "Imbolc" is believed to derive from the Old Irish i mbolc, meaning "in the belly," a poignant reference to the pregnancy of ewes and the imminent lambing season. This association with new life, nourishment, and the returning strength of the sun forms the core of the festival’s symbolism.
Historical Roots and Goddess Brigid
Imbolc’s origins are pre-Christian, tied to the Celtic goddess Brigid (or Bríg). Brigid was a multifaceted deity of fire, hearth, poetry, healing, smithcraft, and fertility. She was the keeper of the sacred flame, a symbol of the sun’s returning power and the creative spark of inspiration. As a protector of homes, livestock, and the vital arts of civilization, her blessing was sought for the health of the land and the prosperity of the household.
With the advent of Christianity in Ireland, the goddess Brigid was seamlessly syncretized with Saint Brigid of Kildare, one of Ireland’s patron saints. Many of the goddess’s attributes, including her connection to fire and healing, were transferred to the saint. February 1st became Saint Brigid’s Day, and the ancient pagan practices were woven into a Christian tapestry. This blending ensured the survival of Imbolc’s traditions for centuries. The modern secular celebration of Groundhog Day in North America also finds distant echoes in the weather divination customs of this cross-quarter day.
Themes and Symbolism
Imbolc is a festival of purification, light, and hopeful anticipation. Its primary themes include:
· The Returning Light: The most evident sign is the lengthening days. Imbolc celebrates the sun’s growing strength and the promise that winter will not last forever.
· Purification and Cleansing: After the introspection and confinement of deep winter, Imbolc is a time for "spring cleaning" in both a literal and spiritual sense. It’s an opportunity to cleanse the home, clear out the old, and prepare the mind and spirit for new growth.
· Kindling and Fire: Fire is central to Imbolc rites. Candles are lit in every window to honor the sun and welcome Brigid. In some traditions, a Brigid’s Cross, woven from rushes or straw, is crafted and hung over doorways to invite her protection and blessings for the coming year.
· The First Stirrings of Life: Though the land may still be frozen, Imbolc honors the latent life force—the "fire in the belly" of the earth, the swelling buds on trees, and the first snowdrops piercing the cold soil.
Modern Celebrations
For contemporary Pagans, Wiccans, and many nature-based spiritual practitioners, Imbolc is a quiet, reflective, yet potent holy day. Common practices include:
· Candle Rituals: Lighting candles, holding candlelit processions, or blessing the year’s supply of candles.
· Creating a Brigid’s Altar: Dedicating a space with symbols of the season: white flowers (especially snowdrops), a bowl of milk or seeds, a small anvil or hammer (for smithcraft), poetry, and handmade Brigid’s Crosses.
· Divination: Particularly weather divination, as the day’s weather was once seen as an omen for the coming season ("If Imbolc be fair and bright, winter will have another flight...").
· Planning and Preparing: Using the inward energy of winter to plan gardens, start seeds indoors, and set intentions for the projects of the coming spring.
· Feasting: Sharing meals that include dairy products (in honor of the lactating ewes), seeds, spiced wines, and breads.
Imbolc is ultimately a festival of hope. In the deepest cold, it reminds us that the wheel is ever-turning. It is a gentle but persistent call to awaken from winter’s slumber, to cleanse our inner and outer spaces, and to nurture the first sparks of inspiration and new beginnings that will flourish in the brighter days ahead. It honors the enduring strength of the hearth, the vital power of creativity, and the ever-present promise of renewal in the natural world.

Sergei Rosen's Roads Through the Looking Glass - The Raven...
⚜️ Nigredo (Latin Nigredo, literally «blackness») — the first stage of the Magnum Opus in the alchemical tradition. For me, this is not merely a beautiful symbol, but a moment of direct confrontation with the unconscious and one’s own Shadow.
The Shadow here encompasses everything that one did not want to see for years: repressed impulses, feelings, desires, and truths about oneself that once failed to fit into the previous conscious framework. At this stage, the old must «rot» to the point of disintegration — otherwise the stalled process will not move forward, and there will be no space for the new to emerge.
When experiencing nigredo, a person seems to lose inner supports: familiar meanings no longer hold, landmarks dissolve, and within rises emptiness, disgust, melancholy, and heavy despondency. Along with this, corresponding images emerge — the black raven, death, corpses, worms, destruction, decay, decline, darkness, everything underground, damp, and unpleasant.
For the one who walks into the night, Nigredo is a natural practice through which a person accepts all elements of the self and opens the realm of the Shadows of the World.
