Growing up, I wasn't really on Twitter or any platform besides Instagram or YouTube. I find now that I missed out on a lot of culture and community that was being created or hosted on platforms, such as "Black Twitter". From #MCO335, I learned that a lot of the words, memes, and adopted language I use today originated from that side of the internet. In doing my own research, I found a lot of popular hashtags and their meaning. For example, #OnlyInTheGhetto refers to things that would happen in a predominantly-black neighborhood, or that the #PaulaDeenBestDishes hashtag emerged after celebrity chef Paula Deen admitted to using the N-word. However, Black Twitter isn’t just jokes and trends, but strong political stances and movements, like #ICantBreathe and #SayHerName, emerging during the Black Lives Matter movement. It’s interesting to take a holistic view of something that is becoming second-nature, but truly diving into what and where this online culture came from.
