The Face Shop Lovely Me:ex Pink Powder Mask Review

Hey hey ^^

My first review on this blog! Yaaay. ouo I’m going to review The Face Shop’s Lovely Me:ex Pink Powder Mask. I’ve used this for a few weeks now, since the last week of June? I got it at The Face Shop in K-Town after I saw Block B in DC.

I do have to say the first thing that caught my eye was the packaging. >.< If it’s in a cute package I will most likely give in and buy it and that’s exactly what happened here, lol.

Front and side of the box...not gonna pretend like my Korean is good enough to read what this little comic says, lol. ( also sorry for my lack of good lighting/camera. Still working out the kinks here ;u; )

Directions, Ingredients, Description etc.

It comes with a seal to keep it fresh~The mask is a light pink color. When it dries it's even lighter! I didn't swatch it because it's so close to my skin color you can't tell it's there. Lol.

Price: I paid about $11 I think? For the amount of product it may be pricy for some people, but for me it’s not too bad. You don’t need a thick layer of this product, a little goes a long way!

Texture: The texture is jelly-like but also kinda powdery. You know when powder gets wet and it clumps together? It’s kind of like that kind of clump factor with the jelly texture mixed in. That’s the best way I know how to explain it. The texture makes it hard to spread, but once you rub it in it goes on evenly. I always rub it between the tips of my fingers before applying to make it easier.

Scent: The scent is a fresh floral. I usually don’t like floral scents but I don’t mind this one! ^^ I guess because it’s more on the fresh side?

Results: I really like this mask a lot! I usually do it before bed 1-2 times a week after toner, and I could tell a difference in my breakouts and skin the next morning. When you first apply it there’s a tingling feeling but after 2-3 minutes that fades. It’s really soothing and leaves my skin feeling soft. I can tell since I’ve been using this that I’ve actually had less breakouts!

tl;dr?

Pros: ♥ Cute packaging ♥ Affordable ♥ Clears and sooths the skin ♥ A little goes a long way!

Cons: ♥ Hard to spread

The Korean Skincare Routine

So one of the first things I noticed about a lot of idols, and most Koreans in general—they have amazing skin! Korean culture puts a lot into appearance, skincare especially, so it’s no wonder that they have a product or multiple products for any kind of skin problem imaginable. Before I dabbled much into the different kind of skin products that were out there, I was taught there were three major steps to skincare: cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. Occasionally for breakouts you use a spot treatment. That was basically it.

But then I thought, these k-idols have to be doing SOMETHING to make their skin that pretty ( besides plastic surgery…let’s not go there. ouo; ). I mean it’s probably some expensive treatment I can’t afford but hey, not everyone in Korea is rich right? What do they do?

Turns out, Koreans are way ahead of us when it comes to skincare—about 10-15 years! They have a huge assortment of products that they use daily, with skincare routines that have anywhere from 10-12 steps and more. Yeah. That’s a lot.

So here’s a breakdown of a typical Korean skincare routine.

Morning Routine

Step One: Cleanser

So everyone and their sassy grandma probably uses some type of cleanser. What type of cleanser you use will depend on your skin type and sensitivity. Right now I love foaming cleansers—it controls oil while being gentle on my face. Etude House’s Wonderpore Whipping Foam is amazing! I would avoid most gel cleansers, all of the ones I’ve tried have been way too harsh even for my oily skin. It would leave all kinds of dry patches, ew.

Step Two: Toner

So this is one product I can tell a HUGE difference between the Korean products and American. Korean toners are much more gentle. They balance your skin’s pH while keeping it hydrated. American toners are much stronger, and a lot of them are alcohol based which is very drying to your skin. They do clear breakouts faster, but it leaves the rest of your skin too dry. Besides, clearing breakouts really isn’t the main purpose of a toner.

This is the one product I would recommend splurging on. A good toner will go a long way! Just make sure it’s alcohol free.

Step Three: Essence

Da heck is an essence?! Yeah, that’s what I thought too. This is a product that many don’t know about but is an amazing addition to any skincare routine. The best way for me to describe it is it’s kind of like a serum but the consistency is a bit thinner. Unlike serums which are widely known to be wrinkle treatments, essence products are used to treat a wide variety of skin problems. Dryness, oiliness, enlarged pores, blackheads, you name it! I recently got a sample of The Face Shop’s Core Seed Purifying Essence…I’m in love! I’ll definitely buy a full size bottle. It’s worked wonders in controlling oil.

Step Four: Emulsion

…Da heck is an emulsion?! I feel you. Basically it’s a lightweight moisturizer. Personally, it would be an optional thing that I would probably wait and use during winter months. But if you have really dry skin or live in a dry area I wouldn’t skip this step…it’s that extra layer of moisture you might need!

Step Five: Moisturizer

Even if you decide not to use an emulsion, moisturizers are still really important. Again this depends on climate, skin type, sensitivity etc. I always use an oil free gel based moisturizer because it doesn’t clog my pores. In the winter months I use a heavier moisturizer at night so my skin doesn’t get too dry, but I guess that’s where the emulsion comes in!

Steps 6-∞ : Primers, BB Cream, Applying makeup

After your moisturizer you continue with putting on your makeup. Primers, BB Cream or CC Cream, etc etc. Again this depends on what you like to plaster all over your face. c:

Night Routine

Step One: Two Step Cleansing

Yes…that reads two step cleansing. Koreans are all about making your skin ultra clean before applying any product. Step one is an oil based cleanser used to remove makeup. Some people use wipes, I personally use them, but I heard that the cleansers are better and less harsh. I have one coming in the mail, so we’ll see~ The second step in cleansing is the one you used in the morning. Some use a different cleanser at night but again, personal preference.

Step Two-Five+: Toner, Essence, Emulsion/Serums, and Moisturizers

Again, same as the morning, but you can use different products if you like depending on your skin needs. I would use a heavier moisturizer and maybe a different serum for the night time if you can spend the extra money. But if not, the morning one is just fine. ^^

Really the serums is where people get crazy. They buy all kinds of different serums for different things and apply them all at night so their skin heals while they sleep.

Step Five+ to ∞ : All The Extras

It’s really hard to put the night time steps in a particular order because skincare routines are always personalized. But this is when you would apply anything extra that you needed—acne spot treatments, eye cream, etc. As a rule of thumb, thinner products absorb easier, so always apply your products thin to thick in consistency during this step and during your serum step if you have more than one.

Weekly/Monthly Treatments: You thought we were done right? Nope! Koreans also have a regimen they do weekly and monthly.

Facial Scrub/Peel: Usually this is a once a week product that gets rid of all your dead skin cells. Scrubs never worked for me, they’re too harsh, but I’m really anxious to try a peel!

Face Masks: These come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Sheet masks, deep cleansing masks, and sleeping masks. These are used 1-2 times a week as well depending on your skin needs. I would recommend deep cleansing maybe once every other week or once a month because it dries out your skin. So make sure you use a heavier moisturizer after!

Extra Tips:

Another product I’ve seen a lot in Korean brands is a freshening mist. These are usually used throughout the day to freshen the skin. I’m fairly sure I’ve seen ones that help control oil too. This is a step I haven’t tried yet but wouldn’t mind, especially during summer months.

Products with SPF are HUGE right now. Make sure at least some of your products, especially your BB cream has SPF in it. It’s extra protection for your skin~

If you have redness or dark spots on your skin, try using products that have whitening. These can be bought in a serum or spot treatment.

Look at the ingredients. The more natural the better!

For me this was overwhelming to think about at first. It’s so time consuming and there’s so many products. But I’m introducing myself to it slowly and I can already tell a difference in my skin! It definitely feels softer and I’m less oily throughout the day. So far so good! I hope this helps. ^_^
