Alkalious/Alkalizate
alkalious/alkalizate – (al.ka'li.ous/al'ka.li.zate) – alkaline.
The 1828 dictionary defines alkalizate as, “alkaline; impregnated with alkali.”
The -ous portion of this word originates with the Latin suffix -osus, meaning, “full of, overly prone to”.
Mr. Webster's dictionary notes that alkalizate is considered obsolete. Conversely, Wiktionary declares that alkalious is considered obsolete.

alkaline-earth metals – (al'ka.line-earth' met'als) – the group of chemical elements comprising calcium, strontium, barium, and sometimes, beryllium, magnesium, and radium.
This term is not in the 1828 dictionary.
The metal portion of this word originates with the Ancient Greek term μέταλλον, which means, “a mine, quarry, or salt pit”, and, “metal”.
Wiktionary defines alkaline-earth metal as, “any of the elements of group II of the periodic table; they are low-density metals that react readily with water to form strongly basic hydroxides, and with many acides to form salts”.
Traipsing Through the Dictionary: Alkaline Earths
alkaline earths – (al'ka.line. Earths) – the oxides of the alkaline-earth metals.
This term is not in the 1828 dictionary.
The earth portion of this phrase originates with Proto-West Germanic erþu, meaning, “earth, world”, as well as, “earth, soil”.
Wiktionary defines alkaline earths as, “any oxide of the elements of group II of the periodic table; they are not as basic as the alkalis, and not so soluble in water”.
Traipsing Through the Dictionary: Alkaline
alkaline – (al'ka.line) – pertaining to an alkali; having the properties of or containing alkali.

Traipsing Through the Dictionary: Alkalimetry
alkalimetry – (al.ka.lim'e.try) – the process of determing the strength of alkalis or the amount of alkali present in any mixture.
This word is not in 1828 dictionary.
The -metry portion of this term originates with the Ancient Greek word -μετρία, which “forms nouns pertaining to measurement”.
Alkalimetry is directly opposite of acidimetry.
Traipsing Through the Dictionary: Alkalimetric/Alkalimetrical
alkalimetric/alkalimetrical – (al''ka.li.met'ric/al''ka.li.met'ric.al) – pertaining to alkalimetry.
This term is not in the 1828 dictionary.
The -metric portion of this word comes from the Latin term metricus, meaning, “metrical (of or pertaining to measurement”, “(poetry) metrical, (of or pertaining to poetic metre)”, as well as, “metric (of or pertaining to the metric system”.
Wiktionary defines alkalimetric as, “describing a titration in which the titrant is an alkali.”

The 1828 dictionary defines this word as, “an instrument for ascertaining the strength of alkalies, or the quality of alkali in potash and soda.”
The -meter portion of this term comes from the Ancient Greek word μέτρον, which means, “something used to measure: measure, rule, weight”, “length, width, breadth”, and “(music, poetry) metre”.
Alkalimeters can be used for a variety of purposes, including cheese making and gardening.
Traipsing Through the Dictionary: Alkaligenous
alkaligenous – (al.ka.lig'e.nous) – producing an alkali.
The 1828 dictionary defines this word as, “producing or generating alkali.”
The -genous portion of this term comes from a combination of the Ancient Greek suffix -γενής, which means, “born in a certain place or condition”, and, “of a kind”, as well as the Latin suffix -osus, which means, “full of, overly prone to”.
The two main alkaligenous processes seem to be the Leblanc process and the ammonia-soda process.
Traipsing Through the Dictionary: Alkalify
alkalify – (al'ka.li.fy) – 1) to form or convert into an alkali 2) to become an alkali.
The 1828 dictionary contains definitions identical to the ones listed above.
The -fy portion of this term originates with the Latin word facio, meaning, “to do”, “to make, construct, fashion, frame, build, erect”, to make, produce, compose”, and “to appoint”.
The method to alkalify a substance involves adding a base, such as sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydroxide. I do this at work quite often!

Alkali metals are extremely reactive with water, a feature many science teachers have used for very fun science lessons.
