dylan still has the dead boy's red hoodie — it was returned in a plastic bag along with a broken watch, ripped jeans, and a shirt full of holes ; his shoes were nowhere to be found. later, the kang would learn many things about the dead boy: how his family was drowning in debt and how his grandparents were selling their house so no one would come knocking. he moves to a small wooden house in the countryside where he shares a room with ness, who has a burn mark on her face and along the extention of her body , ending a promising child actress career . the dead boy stares in the reflection of dylan's mirror & he never smiles. as a teenager, he even washes the red hoodie, but it does not fit anymore. it shatters the illusion that someday he would be that boy again. he understands now — dead boy & broken family. disassociation comes next, the way he faces a disorder that poor kids were not allowed to have and had no way of treating: depersonalization & derealization. in the same way it disconnects him from the world and himself, it's what he needs to survive. dylan lives through most days being a shield for ness when debt collectors come to the house. it would be ideal to also protect his grandmother, but what can a scrawny kid do when their grandfather had a big mouth and provoked the criminals who sometimes even had the decency to look sorrowful for the blows to his back ? it was one of them, after watching how pitiful this situation had become and knowing that there were two innocent children in the house they kept visiting. one day, his grandfather vanished, and dylan got a letter saying, ' make something of yourself, or we'll be back. ' . and so he did.
attending an ivy league college with a full scholarship, he hadn't even finished the engineering degree before coming up with his first successful app. it was some nonsense about love guaranteed, but it became a hit amongst rich people who were willing to blow thousands of dollars to find a partner. and even though it might have seemed like a scam at first, the results only had a 2% error margin. when the chail group was formed, there was nothing flashy about it. it was simply a small office where he worked with han rim until the early hours of the morning, thinking about their next project, and in the meantime, grandma still insisted she could care for ness, whom he only saw about twice a month back then. the jackpot came when he started messing around with the idea of VR games. they hired more people, designers, coders, and even a PR team after moving to a bigger place. the first one, ' trip to wonderland,' was a success. the second ' poised apple ' an even a bigger hit. and they saw profits and shares value grow in record breaking patterns. eventually, the chail group ventured into other areas of revenue, with baek nam going to chail foods and doing a fantastic job launching their products. but dylan remained on the tech side of things. while ha rim was CFO of their branch, he became president of the group and acting CEO, seeing no pushback from board directors.
but of course, tragedy strikes every time you have something to lose. in spring grandma was diagnosed with stomach cancer, and he had to put his life on pause to be there for her. alice was always by his side when she could, but her career was beginning to take off; he wouldn't burden the woman with a problem that belonged just to his family. perhaps it was punishment for leaving ness and chasing such big dreams that he was not worthy of. he still had the dead boy's hoodie ; it did not fit anymore. but before he could burn it, he met emily. sweet, lovely emily, who wore floral dresses even in winter and a cross as a necklace that she never took off. dylan wasn't religious. his grandmother had been a buddhist, but since losing her son, she'd abandoned faith. while alice toured and sent messages at 4am, more than capable of making his heart race, dear emily packed lunches for his grandmother in the hospital and took ness to school even against the girl's wishes and tantrums. in a perfect world where the streets were filled with milk and honey, his best friend would be the one walking hand in hand with him, waving goodbye to the little girl while she sported a smile, unaware of the situation they were in. but dylan could not cage alice — he knows what it is like to live trapped by the ones you love ; he still has the dead boy's red hoodie.
thankfully, elizabeth managed to beat the disease years ago, and dylan was able to go back to work, buying an apartment where he and ness could live close to the elder woman. han rim was still on headquarters filling the the gap he left and that's when the illusion of emily shattered. a background check revealed her family had nearly nothing left, and his friend warned him that she was in it for his money, but it only made Dylan feel more relief. she was using him, and he was using her — it made things easier to digest. when she started talking about ' love, ' the situation became complicated, and when she left, he was at a loss. the CEO knew it wouldn't last ; her parents would have her marry him, and kang was fine with it. a deal is a deal. at least she wasn't trying to fix him. being confronted with the truth that she would forever be stuck by his side and all he could offer were black cards, expensive trips, and something akin to camaraderie must have given emily pause, and he almost felt bad — but he had made peace with the arrangement a long time ago. her parents were also great with ness, eager to become part of the family, and the little girl seemed to like them even better than her own grandmother, which dylan suspected to be the reason why she put up with his girlfriend, even if emily genuinely tried to make an effort. she wasn't a bad person by any means, materialistic maybe, but with his sports cars collecting dust in the garage, it wasn't his place to judge.
trapped in thoughts while she seemed to consider a way to not be blunt or too blunt, hurting his feelings by calling him a selfish son of a bitch —which alice would have no trouble doing were it anyone else — he was snapped back to the present when she brought up the wedding. ❝ i don't care for love, and i don't really think i deserve it. you just have a better impression of me than everyone else. ❞ he isn't sure of the reason for such a thing, even now. although his voice was soft, his eyes remained trained on the road, looking for a parking spot, and they might as well be discussing the weather. what good person who deserves the world is willing to rob someone of their happiness for such a futile reason ? but that was a parent's prerogative ; all he cares about is that someone will love ness and be by her side when she can't understand why he doesn't get out of bed. and for all their differences, emily has done a good job at that so far.
he puts the car in park and unbuckles his seatbelt. ❝ ness is still a kid. she doesn't understand that what she needs is a loud house, receiving love from her grandparents, and someone who can be her mother. what i want doesn't matter. ❞ throwing his head back, his eyes close momentarily, and he sighs heavily. ❝ what good is love anyway ? so you can leave the world with a bunch of debt to your name and make your poor mother pay it off ? that's what my parents had, endless hope and nothing else. were they happy ? they seemed so, but what did it matter in the end ? ❞ dylan regrets the quick rant almost immediately. he doesn't like talking about his parents or the back pain he's accumulated from the loan shark's hits. some things are better buried with the red hoodie from that dead boy. ❝ sorry, ❞ he says quickly, shaking his head as if getting rid of an angry and persistent fog. ❝ let's go get your tarts. it's still monday, so they shouldn't have sold out yet . . . i think. ❞ he raises an eyebrow in her direction, trying to bring back the light mood with a small smile. ❝ hold on. ❞ stepping out of the car, dylan walks until he is in front of her door and opens it for her. ❝ madam ? ❞ with a mock curtsy, he outstretches his hand so she can exit the car.
