The Future Of Sex Revealed | Durex #Connect
Yesterday I was watching a bunch Conan OāBrien videos on YouTube. Since the videos were on a playlist I did not bother getting up an clicking the ads away. Eventually I came across this ad.
Durex has launched an online campaign urging couples to disconnect from technology to connect with each other in the bedroom.
The #connect campaign follows a spoof announcement from Durex last week when the condom brand announced the imminent launch of new smartphone technology in partnership with Siren Mobile to improve peopleās sex lives.
I actually started watching this ad after a minute it started playing and I honestly thought this video was about why people are so connected with their phones. Then it started to pull me in. Like the couples in the video, I started to wonder āhow can smartphone improve coupleā sex life when it seems to be the culprit behind the the disconnectednessĀ between humans. As it turns out, the secret to improving your sex life is to simply...turn off your phone...
Like... OH MY GOODNESS! IT MAKES SO MUCH SENSE! I mean unless you have some weird kinks or something, most people put away their phone during sex. Right? I literally had to paused the video and had a good long laugh before I continued watching this video. Itās a brilliant ad and definitely WOM worthy.
Which now leads us to this weeks content marketing concept of the week fromĀ Jonah Bergerās Contagious: Why Things Catch On. One of the six principle of why things catch on; Principle 6: STORIES.
Social Currency
Triggers
Emotion
Public
Practical Value
Stories
What makes this a great ad in my opinion is the storyĀ and how this ad was executed.
According to Berger, stories are like vessels. Pack full of information, engagement and entertainment. Facts alone can be really boring but when combine with creative story telling, people are most likely going talk and remember your product or content.
What content marketer should do is build a Trojan horse. By that I mean, donāt just tell people about your brand and expect them to buy from you. Create a narrative that people will share, while talking about the product or idea along the way.
When telling a story, it is important to remember to link and connect the story with the brand because at the end of it all, you want people to know about your brand! The goal is to have the brand or product beĀ integralĀ the story, so that its so deeply woven in the story you canāt tell the story without it.
With this Durex ad, throughout the whole video, no one ever mentions, how great their products are or make any claims that their product will lead to better sex. How they get people to buy their products is linked to the idea that people should turn off their phones and spend some time with their lovers. It doesnāt have to be sex BUT if people are engaging in safe sex, thereās DUREX!
āSex sellā. The use of sex appeal in advertising to sell products and etc. For this ad, thereās no half naked men or barely dress women or anything like that. However, because of the nature of this company, I felt that it plays on peopleās curiosity about sex and itās enjoyment. Durex chose YouTube as one its advertising platform, so they were aware of the ad skip button when they were making this ad. So within the first few seconds viewers would see this
After seeing this, most people would ask, āHOW?ā (And no, itās not the vibrating feature on the smartphone.) To find out you either watch on or look up the information. Either way Durex benefits from this, because they have raised a question people were not thinking about and they already have the answer to this question.Ā
The question itself really peaks people interested. If an individual is comfortable with talking about sex with others I believe that this topic will generate a lot of WOM. Itās a intimate topic so our course most people will talk about it with their friends and family . Of course most of us donāt spontaneously talk about sex, but the story that Durex created involves smartphone. Since people are so attached to their mobile devicesĀ whenever they look at their smartphone or when they are turning off their devices, it might trigger them to talk about this ad.Ā
I personally think this ad is also a joke disguised as an advertisement within a story. The quickest way to tell other people about this ad is by saying, ā Do you know how your smartphone could lead to amazing sex?ā And the punch line is, āYou simply turn it off!āĀ Maybe people can get some social currency from this.
Aside from the story from this ad, I also like the emotional aspect in the later half of the ad. Itās always something content should have. What kind of emotion are we trying to invoke with our content? And How will the customer feel about our brand after the video is over?Ā
I find the diversity of couples very interesting. I didnāt know this until I finish watching the video, it turns out March 28th is Earth Hour from 8:30pm to 9:30pm.Ā
Earth Hour started in 2007 as a lights-off event to raise awareness about climate change. We have grown to engage more than 162 countries and territories worldwide.
Ok...I see what you are implying Durex...āTurnOffToTurnOnā. Another reason why this ad is very well thought out, the timing is right and itās being subtle yet suggesting a whole lot to consumer.Ā
