Mental illnesses have been spiking at an alarming rate since 1955 so I really can't believe it's the internet. The thing is Schizophrenia and depression used to be self-limited and had bouts of six month or so long episodes, but recently that's changed and the effects have become more chronic. A lot of people presume this is because therapists have moved from 'talk therapy' to just pushing drugs. And that's because psychology has moved to believing that these illnesses are because of chemical imbalances in the brain and instead they think messing with that balance will help the situation. I honestly don't take medicine and I haven't kept up with the research to know if that actually is working for majority but seeing how people are becoming worse, well..
I do believe that the internet is very triggering but I think that there's become more of an awareness and comfortability to having disorders as well. There's also no tone on the net to where people that have anxiety or disorders that keep them on edge can deduce from. So I think people perpetually have this high guard and they're ready to snap at people. NOW I completely disagree that gives anyone a viable reason to yell at people or fight. Just because you have a condition does not mean you are excused from treating others the way you want to be treated.
To be completely honest, reading this made me personally feel bad. Which I know was not the intention of this post in any way!! Yes I do agree and there are studies that show relying on social media can make others feel jealous or have a bad effect. That's totally undeniable. But I don't think true mental disorders like personality disorders can be caused by the internet. I think it can heighten people's emotions though, but that goes back to people and their social actions. There's no tone on the internet (so personally for me, when people use emoticons it makes it sooo much easier), and things like the anon button. I don't think it should be taken away but the fact that people can really use it to send hate is disgusting.
Anyways, I hope you can understand where I'm coming from. I just would never want anyone to think that BPD for me came from the internet. It actually comes from a variable of reasons internet not included and I would hate for people to say I don't belong on the internet because of it. I don't want to be depressed from things people say--I don't want to take things people say the wrong way, or use my disability as a crutch. Honestly, until this account, I've never admitted to having it. I just want to have fun with others. I feel very horrible lately because of all this hate everywhere, but I don't want to post about it. I don't want to feed into the negativity. I truly want to have fun.
ALL IN ALL I typed far too much, but I really wanted to comment on this because I was scared people would think the internet is a primary biases for people's symptoms. ALSO I KNOW YOU DIDN'T SAY ANY OF THOSE THINGS! I should totally add that--Last thing I want to do is put words in your mouth!! I was just covering what people might have thought.
