The duality in this work by Beauford Delaney parallels his personal life. As a modernist painter remembered for his influence during the Harlem Renaissance, Delaney faced prejudices as a Black, gay man who lived in Tennessee, New York and France throughout his lifetime.

In this painting, a Fang reliquary figure, associated with African rituals that honor ancestors in order to ensure continuity between the living and the dead, is inserted into a modernist still-life composition. Perhaps a sign of Delaney’s interest in the ideas of philosopher Alain Locke, such as Pan Africanism, which encouraged African American artists to turn away from European convention and take inspiration from their African roots.

Today, Delaney’s legacy continues through the work of younger artists—some of whom are Black or part of the #LGBTQ+ community—and draw on their identity and heritage in their own art. #Pride
