Rising R&B star Shan Poo better known as BOYSLASHFRIEND just dropped his debut album Low Key on Jillionaire’s Feel Up Records. Following her debut Cut 4 Me LP on Fade to Mind, Kelela is ready to drop the sophomore Hallucinogen EP via Warp and her own Cherry Coffee Music. Ahead of the release, which comes out on October 9th, she shared the second single today entitled “Rewind,” which features her delicate, sultry pipes against an up-tempo, Miami-bass inspired beat that’s perfect for headphones, your next road trip, or your next club set. Mind of Genius knows a thing or two about musical genius. Aside from signing Grammy-nominated artist Zhu, the L.A.-based imprint also scooped up fellow west-coast artist Gallant. The latest release from Crooker’s CIAO Records imprint comes from CIAO/Luckybeard mainstay Dilligas in the form of the “What’s Good” double single. Sometimes the best labels are born out of the best nights, and AC Slater’s buzzing Night Bass party is a prime example of this natural progression from good vibes to great imprint. Galcher Lustwerk is one of Brooklyn’s best kept secrets. However, with the recent launch of his own label Lustwerk Music, and it’s Pitchfork approved debut release, it’s not long until he’s a household name (no pun-intended). Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Lustwerk first made serious waves upon releasing his 100% Galcher mixtape a couple years ago, which included the title track of his latest release ‘Parlay,’ in addition to “Kaint,” “Dockside,” and a bonus dub mix. Now granted it takes awhile for most artist’s music to reach the masses, it seems especially important in dance music to proliferate an extensive catalog with haste owing to the exponential saturation of the genre and it’s fleeting trends. Yet somehow, Lustwerk’s tracks seal in a timeless freshness that refuses to expire, regardless of how popular (or unpopular) “deep house” may become. Whether it’s his relaxed and funky, hip-house vocals, his dreamy sound design, or his effortlessly groovy drums, the sounds of Lustwerk will hypnotize you, and are no doubt here to stay. Compilations are a great medium to showcase a variety of up-and-coming talent. But for Safer at Night, their debut compilation Nyctophilia is much more than merely a collection of cool, DJ-friendly beats. Instead, Nyctophilia plays more like a collaborative album. Fresh off the heels of their debut, self-tilted LP, Florida indie-pop duo Priest promptly return with six remixes of select songs from the record. Onra’s third album ‘Fundamentals’ almost sounds like it could be his first. It’s no secret that the sounds of the UK underground have recently crept into the realms of global pop music over the last few years. Between Kanye’s salute to grime at the Brit awards, Route 94, Secondcity, and MK’s chart-topping UK house hits, and the surplus of top-40, US rap songs riffing on the classic retro house organ, it’s officially cool to sound UK again. This resurgence of celebrated styles seems to have seeped back into the underground too as garage & bassline are making their way back into many DJ’s sets. Bassline in particular is one of those microcosm genres that never really left our crates, but is now seeing some much deserved rewinds on the decks and reinterpretations in the studio thanks in part to parties like AC Slater’s roaming Night Bass and his growing imprint Party Like Us. His latest signee Holy Goof champion this sound in style on their new four track Midland Line EP while paying homage to their hometown. The tracks have already received support from tastemakers like My Nu Leng, Crookers, Flava D, Craze, Hybrid Theory, Shorterz, Sinden, and many more, so you know these jams are in prime shape for club play! Ta-ku is one of those producers that doesn’t really need an introduction. But, incase you still haven’t heard of the Australian beat-machine, now is definitely the time to get learned. Born Reggie Matthews, the Perth-based producer grew up on his Dad’s records cherishing the music of the Jackson 5, Chicago, Commodores, James Brown, Creedence, and more. What started as a vinyl collection lead to buying turntables which lead to DJing which lead to (you guessed it) production. Fast-forward to today and Ta-Ku is now one of the most hyped names in electronic music and the latest artist to join the Fool’s Gold Records catalog with his forthcoming LP entitled ‘Songs To Make Up To.’ The heartfelt collection of R&B-inspired beats follows the more introspective and somber ‘Songs To Break Up To’ which dropped a couple years back on Huh, What, & Where (a label that’s now a proud member of the Seed fam). He’s already dropped the first single entitled “Love Again” - a soulful, intoxicating, grand-piano driven number featuring Detroit-bred singer/song-writer JMSN and Soulection’s Sango.
