What are seed bombs?
Your little balls of dirt contain a mixture of clay, soil, and wildflower seeds native to southern California! You can use them to beautify empty lots, dying lawns, or use them to regenerate the soil in areas where you’ve been gardening. Seed bombing is a popular guerrilla gardening tactic used to spread natural biodiversity and invite pollinators in areas where the land has been overworked, or invasive and non-native species have been planted.
To use them, simply crumble them up, smoosh them, or throw them (with force!) where you want them to grow. Use your seed bombs sooner than later to prevent seedlings from sprouting inside the bombs! Now is the perfect time to use them since it’s the beginning of the rainy season, and wildflowers love the rain. The rain will help break apart the bombs and nourish the seeds inside. Wildflowers and grasses are pretty hardy and need little tending to in order to grow.
My hope is that not only will you have fun throwing, smooshings, and planting your seed bombs, but that you’ll share my seed bomb recipe with friends and family and spread the joy of guerrilla gardening. That way, we can get back to healing our local ecosystem one dirt ball at a time. :) Bombs away!
