Ok but imagine McGonagall in cat form prowling around the castle, in strategically chosen places so that Umbridge will come across her.

Umbridge takes the cat back to her office and feeds it a little saucer of milk. The cat starts coming back to Umbridge’s office around the same time every night, until eventually Umbridge gets into a little routine of setting out a saucer of milk for the cat before bed. McGonagall now has all the best secrets on Umbridge, all of the results of the evaluations, and most importantly, is in a perfect position to spy on the ministry for the Order of the Phoenix.

All because Umbridge is obsessed with cats.

I was discussing representation of gender in fiction and I was thinking about how the ‘dead wife’ and ‘dead mom’ tropes are way too common in fiction and there was a big imbalance in killing prominently female characters.

But instead of articulating that point I just said “More husbands need to die.”

I have this theory that Neville is supposed to represent everything that Peter could have been. You know, both of them were the weak link in the friend group, the guy easily influenced. But instead, Rowling made Neville weak to prove the two paths an individual could take. How each of our weaknesses manifest in different ways. Peter’s weakness made him a villain, ultimately worse than Voldemort because he betrayed his friends, while Neville’s weakness made him work harder and in the end made him Harry’s strongest ally.

You will notice that none of the six from the old generation survived. The kids each have traits from the old generation but they’re here to fix the past, and thus must survive the series to metaphorically right the past. If you went with Harry to the Ministry of Magic in book 5, you mattered beyond just backing him up against Voldemort. This core six represented the loss and failure of the Marauders generation, and the hopes of a post-Voldemort future.

Okay, this is what I loved about this movie.

Joy was working so hard to keep Sadness out of the way so Riley could be happy.. But this movie clearly shows the negative effects on your psyche if you keep your sadness bottled up. Yes, Joy is a wonderful sensation and we’d love to feel it all the time.. but Sadness is also a necessity. Bottling up feelings CAN do damage.. (I would know, as I’m sure a lot of us would..)

We do deserve to be happy, but we need to experience sadness, too. It only makes the joyous occasions even brighter and more special. If you ARE sad, let it out, don’t bottle it up. Once you’re done with that.. Treat yourself to something like a cookie or donut, enjoy a hot bath, watch a funny video of kittens trying to fit into a shoe .. Or, if the sadness is too much … Talk to a (SUPPORTIVE) family member, a friend, or look into possibly seeing a therapist. There are people that love you and want to stay by your side, in joy and in sadness.

Let’s also remember that our capacity for sympathy and empathy requires us to feel sad. Without sadness, we wouldn’t be able to relate to others; we would rather try to force happiness on people who are upset and tell them simply “don’t be sad” instead of trying to understand what’s causing them pain, which is why Sadness was able to help Bing Bong when Joy couldn’t.
