There were a lot of things about life that Sebastian Vora had learned from an early age. You don’t always get what you want, patience is a virtue, and most importantly, you should never trust your father. Born in Providence Peak, Colorado to Ankita Vora and Steven Flynn as the younger of the two Flynn boys, it didn’t take long for their family of four to shift into a smaller family of three. Seemingly overnight, only a few days after Sebastian was saying his first words, Steven served Ankita divorce papers and fled town to the farthest place he could reach. Ironically, to Denver, where he stayed for several years and harbored no interest in seeing his children. Ankita Flynn became Ankita Vora and had full custody of her sons, who she was insistent on raising properly. She wanted them to be kind, to be soft and polite to others in a way that their father never was. Thankfully, Sebastian received minimal influence from Steven during his most formative years.
The first time Sebastian clearly remembered seeing his father was in the parking lot of Below Zero when he was six years old, where Ankita had taken him — along with his brother, Hunter — to meet Steven properly over a bowl of ice cream. Steven had suddenly felt as though he deserved to see his children, undoubtedly a result of yet another one of his fickle relationships he’d had since his divorce crashing and burning.
Not long afterwards, there was a straining renegotiation process which granted Steven partial custody of both boys. Sebastian and Hunter visited Denver every other weekend to spend a few days with their father — otherwise known as locking themselves in the guest bedroom that Steven had called ‘theirs’ and playing video games until their mother came to pick them up again. Every other weekend slowly trickled down to once a month, and various cancellations lead them directly into the same position they’d originally been in: living with Ankita. Sebastian never had a problem with that. He loved his mother more than anyone in the world, right next to Hunter who he looked up to the most. The three of them as a family unit turned out to be a tad bit unconventional, but they were much better off on their own without Steven in the picture.
Neither of them could have predicted how drastically their lives would change, then. After a sudden illness took Ankita’s life, the Flynn boys were thrust into the care of their father in Denver full time — who was not only ill-prepared to look after children to begin with, but angered by the hand he’d been dealt. He’d thought it to be unfair; he moved to Denver to get away from the life he had shared with Ankita, to get away from his boys, and instead the life he had came back to him when he hadn’t wanted it to. As unjustified as it was, he took out the brunt of his anger on Sebastian and Hunter whenever he had the chance. The once kind, soft and polite boys had grown to be tougher. Quickly, they adapted and learned how to survive, forming a hard shell around themselves to help them endure. Looking back, Sebastian realized that a lot of his ability to endure was owed to Hunter. Hunter was always sticking up for his little brother, taking the brunt of Steven’s force in order to protect him. Even though he never should have had to in the first place, Hunter grew up for Sebastian.
And without Hunter, Sebastian never would have seen himself coming out of that situation alive.
It was his eighteenth birthday, practically down to the minute, when he moved out of Steven’s home and into a small, one bedroom apartment in Providence Peak that Hunter had been saving up for. Having snuck a majority of his belongings there secretly without Steven’s knowledge, by the time he was a legal adult, most of the hard work had been done. The rest was relatively easy — grabbing any necessary documents, changing his name to become untraceable and going no contact with his father.
Hunter and Sebastian had cake on their kitchen island that same night to celebrate more than one occasion. With the both of them out, the rest of their lives could officially start.
Sebastian lived with Hunter for nearly a decade, saving up very little in that time before it was evident that he was slowly starting to get pushed towards better things. Hunter never explicitly stated that he had to move out, but it was becoming more and more apparent that it would be the smarter choice for the both of them. Thus, he started browsing Craigslist in search of ads for a new roommate. However, instead of a new apartment, Sebastian found fighting.
Joining an underground fighting club had not been something that Sebastian ever would have seen in his future, but he couldn’t deny his own curiosity after stumbling upon the advertisement and he found himself falling in love with the concept the very first time he laid eyes on the fighters. Even just standing by, watching the fights as they happened — it was exhilarating, and he wanted to be a part of it. It helped that there always seemed to be a hefty wad of money attached to the winner of each fight, and Sebastian had been in a position where he was strapped for cash.
From that point on, Sebastian started looking into what it would take to become a fighter. He studied all sorts of professional matches, split whatever free time he had between the gym and yoga, and became the best version of himself physically that he could possibly be. It took a long time before Sebastian actually participated, and even longer for him to win, but it was easy to say that he got hooked on the feeling once he finally had.
Hunter never saw fighting as the best idea for Sebastian — after all, he always wanted what was best for him, and working on his fashion design skills had seemed to be where his heart really was instead, but the former also made his brother happy, so it was difficult to complain too much. Besides, Sebastian was never one to listen all that well anyway, and soon enough was moving in with new roommates Downtown after searching on Craigslist a second time. More than excited for this new chapter of his life to begin, he brought his pets along with him and hoped for the best.
