how did ruby turn?

during the fall of Beacon. The infection was manufactured by Adam as a reaction between dust and a strain of rabies. Essentially, anyone who gets it slowly turns into large dust crystals :). They're immune to it so it's basically of no combat-wise anymore. Instead of (I think Jaune?) the one that saved Ruby here was Qrow!

uhh ok so what happened to her?

Yang and Taiyang left after Ruby started turning. They didn't know she was conscious and assumed she'd try to kill them like all other infected. Yang insisted on taking her sister to Mistral even then, but Taiyang stopped her and they (for lack of a better expression) left her behind, where she later roamed and found herself on the outskirts of The Pine Farm, and met Oscar! After that, they teamed up to try and get to Mistral(where she assumed her family to be)

what about the others?

Everyone's somewhat fine physically. Yang and Taiyang don't really speak anymore, and Yang doesn't have her prosthetic because of the pandemic. Weiss is stressed, trying to find a way to take them to Atlas(where they figured it'd be the correct place to go). Blake is likely trying to help Yang but also being miss disassociation because of everything that happened.

Team JNPR are with them, they're also healthy but very taken aback by everything and especially the loss of Ruby. The one who took the harsher hit of her "death" and abandonment was Qrow. Taiyang and him spend a good chunk of the story at eachother's throat, they only subside when Ruby and ~someone else~ shows up.
