Theyâre quite close! This photoâs probably taken like right before Jude moves to Boston?Around end of book 1 (after trial) Jonah moves in with him and ends up getting a job at the hospital too lmao - maybe an accountant or something so he works closely with Kyra and they have something going on.Which in the end doesnât become anything more because he dies in the chemical attack.

sÄąla in her new outfit she bought to give herself more confidence and it ended up failing miserably and then she has one of the top 3 worst days of her life so far
these options out of context are cracking me up đ
Okay but like this specific premium choice was just odd to me.Like.MC OFFERING to tail and investigate their boss's mother who left him years and years ago.AND THEN going out of their way to eavesdrop on their boss's mother for his boss.okay.And then having the option to assure him that yeah mommy actually loves you Ethan. What???Why are we doing that???
If we're considering my MC Jude I think the only reason he does this is because this is the only way he can "make amends" with Ethan since he keeps pissing him off even if at this point Ethan actually doesnt have anything against him.Promise you're not mad at me if I help you with your mommy issues?Tf is wrong with Jude man pull yourself together đ

happy book 2 everyone!!! i really like these chapters. both for my nefarious plot but also i enjoy that it picks up pretty quickly (even if it is a bunch of awful stuff happening. as per usual. they need to give mc a vacation)
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
im getting the big one out of the way: did your mc tell their friends that edenbrook is closing, or did they keep it to themself? in either of the instances below:
i love and dont love how mc immediately attributes it to keeping ethans secret. again i think pb forgets theyre trying to do an unethical romance. like sure mc could keep his secret for him but also thats their boss!!! they just made it onto ethans elite team. maybe going against his direct request is not the way to keep their job man idk
did your mc go to the dinner with ethan, naveen, harper, and the governor? did they feel awkward or out of place? there was a lot of pressure on mc. like a weird amount they really did bring mc just to sell their case. but anyway i would like to hear more about your mcs background and how it did or didn't ready them, and if they didn't go was that a contributing factor
i enjoy how mc consistently wants to meet with patients face-to-face (not only are they worried about diagnosing patients without seeing them, but also they specifically say they want to speak with lamar, not just run a test on him). what drives your mc to do this?

Jude doesnt tell anyone that the hospital's closing.He's....a tad annoyed? At having to keep such a major secret from his friends again and he kindawishesEthanwouldntdothat but its okay!He pushes that feeling down becaue you know what. He's proud being his little Secret Keeper.Because CLEARLY that means Ethan trusts him and Jude's doing something right. So he keeps his mouth shut!
---
okay so Jude goes to the dinner with everyone , NO WAYY he's passing that oppurtunity up , and like you know the way Ethan phrases in the invitation and the whole "we gotta save Edenbrook!!" , he's eager to do his part , for the patients in the hospital and also for not wanting to let the diagnostics team down.Deep down during the dinner Im sure Jude did feel like a huge sort of pressure but I think he hid it well , he's got loads of experience of appearing put together when uh well he isn't in fact.
Again he's not messing something like this up , not in front of his beloved mentor , the Chief , or his new colleagues , theres a certain pride that blooms in his chest when he knows he played his role well at the dinner.Whatever the heck that role was.
---
Jude's whole thing with wanting to see patients face to face and stuff like that stems from wanting to like , really make a connection with his patient y'know? He wants all his patients to know he is going to be there for them in every capacity.Which is probably not healthy but anyway.Hospitals and medical shit can be scary , he doesnt want to be some stranger or whatever.Oh and also the face to face thing is a tad more important to Jude since he's hard of hearing and relies a lot on reading body language and making visual observations , he's able to discern a bit more than the average person since he kinda has to in order to not miss anything.(gotta mention him telling Esme the most important thing is to WATCH the patient in that premium scene)
personal least favourite media criticism experience has got to be when people are like it's so great that the writers don't rely on sexual abuse/assault as an easy shortcut to actual character or narrative development and you're like sure i guess and then they're like i mean it's just so gratuitous and unnecessary, you'd have to be some kind of sick pervert who hates women to rely on something like that, honestly unless you're making something About sexual violence i don't think it should exist at all, it's just lazy writing, and you're like oh this never had anything to do with caring about victims for you did it
in a similar vein, when people recommend a work on the basis that it contains no themes of sexual violence and there's blatant subtext that suggests otherwise but now you know if you point it out you're going to be seen as a disgusting predator and fun ruiner and expected to submit a comprehensive disclosure of your own personal history of abuse for review to determine whether you're "allowed" to talk about it
Premise: What if itâs Cassie in the fMRI machine responding to Ethanâs probing questions? Reimagining of the premium scene in 1x6.
Fandom: Open Heart
Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Cassie Valentine)
Rating/Category: Teen. Fluff.
Words: 1,435
A/N: It only took me 3 years since I first said I wanted to write a switch of this scene. But, I finally did it! Yay, me. lol
@dr-colossal-pita Ended up using your question. So, thanks!
Cassie Valentine had never thought herself claustrophobic. And then she opened her big mouth and agreed to let Ethan Ramsey slide her, headfirst, into an fMRI machine, all in the name of efficiency.
Heâd been too impatient to wait for radiology to test the machine. Why was he in such a hurry? She didnât know and probably should have asked before saying yes.
She was already nervous that her body would give away her secret crush on him as he studied her neurological responsesâthe man was a world-famous diagnostician, after all, and she was lying flat on her back in a narrow cylinder that might as well be a lie detector.
Okay, so she knew rationally and practically, courtesy of med school, that an fMRI wouldnât actually reveal her innermost thoughts. It also wasnât her first time in an MRI suite.
When sheâd torn her ACL in college during a ballet leap gone horribly wrong, she had spent months in and out of hospitals, undergoing treatment, surgery, and scans to track her recovery.
But her head had been outside the whole time, and sheâd often been bored, staring morosely at the ceiling, grief and anger mingling at the reality of losing something that had been so integral to her identity until then.
Back then, sheâd barely noticed as the machine hummed and buzzed and clanked around her. Now, as the machine slowly came online, every sound was magnified, adding to her unease.
Cassie shuddered from the cold and the nerves she couldnât seem to shake.
She wondered anxiously what type of questions Dr. Ramsey would ask. Her low ranking in the fellowship competition and her handling of Mrs. Turnerâs case last night didnât exactly inspire confidence.
She could handle one or two things going wrong, but when everything piled on, she froze.
âStarting scan. Try not to move, Valentine,â Ethanâs voice boomed in the confined space.
Cassie exhaled slowly and forced herself to relax, mentally reviewing each of the five ballet positions until she felt the calm spread.
Here we go.
Ethanâs eyes shifted from the scan appearing on the screen to the smaller monitor beside it. Cassie had been fidgeting earlierânot surprising, as most people found the experience disorientingâbut now she lay perfectly still inside the machine, her expression giving nothing away.
âInitial brain scan complete,â he said into the microphone. âWe can begin.â
âHow does it look?â she asked.
âLike an internâs brain. In other words, nothing special.â He rolled his eyes, safe in the knowledge that she couldnât see him.
âGee, thanks,â she shot back sarcastically, making him grin.
âFocus, Valentine. Letâs try a softball question. Whatâs your fondest childhood memory?â
âDecorating the Christmas tree with my brother.â She smiled before continuing. âMy mom said we could use whatever we wanted. It was the most ridiculous-looking thing, a hodgepodge of toy cars, action figures, and papier-mâchĂŠ ornaments we had made in school. But it was ours, and we loved it.â
Cassie chuckled at the memory, and Ethan noted how her hippocampus lit up, the response spreading to her amygdala. It might have been a long time ago, but the memory was clearly still important to her.
âYou wake up in prison. What did you do?â
âI shot a man in Reno.â
Ethan bit back a laugh at the quick response, delivered with relish.
âBe serious,â he said gruffly, clearing his throat.
âI am. He had it coming and only had himself to blame,â Cassie continued, steely-eyed. âIf youâd have been there, if youâd have heard it, I bet you would have done the same.â
His eyes narrowed at the familiar words. Broadway musicals werenât really his thing, but even he knew those lyrics.
âAre you reciting lyrics from a musical?â he demanded.
âHuh. I didnât peg you for a musical fan.â She smiled mischievously. âAfter our frog rescue mission, I was positive you only listened to dead composers.â
Ethan ignored the implied insult. Really, she was too irreverent for an intern competing for a spot on his team.
âMoving on. I was surprised you didnât ask me about your fellowship ranking when you chased me down earlier.â
âYou wouldnât have told me anyway,â she said, not even waiting a beat. âBesides, itâs irrelevant. I know I have to do better, so itâs not on you if I rank low.â
Ethanâs brows rose at her answer, and he wondered if she was telling the truth. He kept his eyes on the changing colors on the screen, tracking her neurological responses. A part of her believed it to be true, but it wasnât the whole answer. She appeared conflicted.
He wanted to push further, but a glance at the clock had him reconsidering. Theyâd already been here too long, and he had an outpatient clinic starting in half an hour.
âLast one. Why did you want to become a doctor?â
âAccording to my brother, the role of Mother Teresa was taken.â
Ethan stared at the 3D map of her brain, but her wry response had him turning to the monitor. The corner of her lips twitched in a small smile before her expression became serious.
Her hypothalamus flared briefly, and he wondered at the reaction as she stayed silent.
âThatâs it?â he probed, dissatisfied with the incomplete response.
âIâm thinking,â she replied, her words coming out slowly. âItâs a complicated question.â
âItâs really not, Rookie,â Ethan shot back.
âIt was your research that inspired me to go into medicine.â
Scan forgotten, Ethan crossed his arms as he continued watching her on the monitor.
âI told you earlier to save the ass-kissing for someone it works on.â
âOh, please.â She glared directly at the camera now.
âIâm not sucking up. I told you this last week at the baseball game, after I helped you win over those insurance execs. Which you never even thanked me for, by the way,â she said, disgruntled. âYou really are the reason why I became a doctor. I want to help people the way you and the diagnostics team do. The people with nowhere else to go.â
Ethan turned his attention to the screen and saw several areas intensify as she repeated the teamâs mission back to him, her tone signaling offense at not being taken seriously and passion for a cause that, until now, he believed only he and Naveen truly shared.
With his mentor gone, Ethan had lately begun to wonder how long he could keep Naveenâs legacy alive if there was no one else to pass it on to.
As much as he hated Harper forcing this fellowship competition on him, he could see the reasoning and the potential upside of finding someone who believed in the teamâs purpose as much as he did.
Forgetting the time, he opened his mouth to ask a follow-up question, but the shrill sound of a pager interrupted his thoughts. Her white coat was draped over the back of the chair, and a green screen briefly lit up in the pocket.
âIs that mine or yours?â she asked.
He sighed. âYours. Weâre done anyway.â
A few minutes later, he pressed the button and watched her slowly slide out of the machine. An awkward silence passed between them as his blue eyes met hers, the green contemplative and shimmering under the fluorescent lights.
He looked away after helping her off the table, giving her privacy as she adjusted the flimsy hospital gown before pulling on her white coat and reaching for her clothes on the corner table.
âIâll let you finish getting dressed.â
Ethan started to walk away, but the words left unsaid had him turning to watch her over his shoulder.
âCassie, IâŚâ He wasnât sure what he wanted to say, and her wary expression had him second-guessing everything. In the end, he just shrugged.
âThanks for your help, Valentine.â He smiled briefly but sincerely. âFor today and last week.â
Cassie nodded, clutching the bundle of clothes against her. âYouâre welcome, Dr. Ramsey.â
He stared at her for another moment, and then, because there was nothing more to say, he marched off, closing the door silently behind him.
Once outside, he leaned against the wall, closing his eyes and reaching for the self-control he valued so much. Breathing slowly, he centered himself and took one step, then another, until he was far enough away from the fMRI suite to feel like himself again.
He had more important matters to concern himself with. Naveen had agreed to let Ethan run some tests. It had been a hard-won battle, and what came next required his complete focus.
