This issue contains a scene a lot of you have probably seen:

Before we get into this particular scene let’s talk some good ol’ context

The issue start with Jason hearing some screaming “NOOOOOO!” from a building. Instinctively Jason swings into the building to help.

Jason is attacked by Felipe Garzona (remember him he’s important). Batman ends up having to step in when the fight becomes two on one. Obviously the dynamic duo win.

Jason checks the bedroom to find an abused woman who i believe is implied to have been raped by Garzona. They take her to the police station.

Unfortunately Felipe says the woman, Gloria Stanson, came of her own volition and got her injuries by tripping.

It’s a he said she said situation and Felipe’s father is a diplomat giving Felipe “diplomatic immunity” according to Commissioner Gordon.

This terrifies Gloria and pisses off Jason.

Batman and Robin still have cause to investigate Felipe as he is likely involved with cocaine selling or something. However this is a watch from the sidelines type deal as to catch him in the act, which further frustrates Jason.

They do manage to catch Felipe, but he surrenders so Jason can’t attack him.

Felipe’s lawyer springs him from custody but he will still have to go back to his home country. Not without calling Gloria.

The dark knight and his boy wonder go to check up on Gloria. Unfortunately, they arrive too late.

Jason confronts Felipe on Felipe’s balcony.

We do not see Jason push Felipe or see Felipe fall. In fact this is the panel right before the fall:

So comes the question: did Felipe fall…or was he pushed.

Now, I personally find it more likely that Jason pushed him, but at the same time find it hard to believe Jason would deliberately kill someone (well at this point).

Anyway Jason denies this and tells Batman “I guess I spooked him. He slipped.” Before swinging off.

Why I bring up all this context is because it makes it easier to see how this happened. Ive often seen or heard people refer to this seen as proof the Jason was a bad person, a bad Robin, a bad guy. That this is proof of him being too angry.

To that I say “fuck you and the horse you rode in on.”

Let’s say Jason did push Felipe. I’m not condoning murder but saying Jason didn’t have reason or wasn’t even a bit justified is bull. The dude was an abusive scumbag who Jason personally saw act.

Edit: I am condoning murder fuck this guy he deserves it.

Also Jason is a kid. Even though Bruce acknowledged he was to emotionally invested in the case he let Jason come along anyway. So Jason not only saw this woman be abused and traumatized, he even found her body after she took her own life.

That would fuck up any adult let alone a kid.

Lately I’ve been seeing a lot of posts to the effect that Tim deserted Dick once he became Batman. Tim should have let Robin go gracefully and become a Nightwing-like hero who could help Batman keep Gotham safe (or at least as safe as Gotham could ever be). The idea is that Tim could easily have stayed on and still become an independent hero.

[For the sake of argument, I’m going to ignore the fact that Morrison wanted Dick and Damian to be Batman and Robin for five years. To that end, Mr. Morrison basically arranged to have Tim put on a bus out of town, never to be seen again. Holding my nose at the utterly crappy way DC handled Damian becoming Robin, I’m going to stick to what actually ended up happening in cannon.]

The idea that Tim and Damian could peacefully co-exist in the same city, never mind the same house, was never going to happen. To understand just why, let’s go back a bit. Remember when Damian first came to Gotham? Tim did try to be nice to the kid.

Keep in mind that Damian was a literal child raised by his psycho mother and grandfather to be a killing machine. Expecting anything else out of him at this point was wishful thinking at best.

Despite Damian attempting to murder him, Tim helped Damian when he ran into trouble. When Tim once again tried to reach out Damian the kid thanked him by shoving Tim off the dinosaur, letting him fall to what Damian hoped would be his death.

Here we see basics of the early Tim/Damian dynamic at work. Remember that this Damian was still fresh from the League of Assassins: a murderous death cult where it was perfectly acceptable to lob off someone’s head if they cut you in the lunch line. A few weeks with Bruce and Alfred were not going to undo a lifetime of indoctrination.

If Tim had actually stayed in Gotham, after Bruce “died” it’s quite likely that Damian (when Tim inevitably ticked him off) would have tried to kill him again. Dick would then have been forced to choose between them (and does anyone else wonder what Dick would have done if Damian had managed to seriously injure or kill Tim?). Tim had good reason to believe that Dick would choose Damian over him. After all, from his point of view, Dick had done just that with the Robin mantle.

Tim simply wasn’t safe around Damian. Yes, Tim had a barnful of mental health issues at that point. Those issues were made worse by living in an atmosphere when Tim could never let his guard down. Tim had no other option but to leave.

Before anyone says that it’s not true, that Tim would’ve been just fine at the manor, let’s remember that Damian tried to kill him after Tim got back from his Quest-For-Bruce. Damian was angry that he was included on the “Hit-List.” Despite having grown emotionally while working with Dick’s Batman, Damian fell back on his League training without blinking an eye.

You can’t really blame Damian for behaving like this. His childhood with Talia was one long, unending trauma of horrific abuse. This was how Damian survived long enough to come to Gotham, by removing those he considered a threat to his position. That said, it’s also not hard to understand why Tim couldn’t stay around waiting for Damian to stop making attempts on his life.

It was inevitable that either Damian or Tim would have to leave. Dick didn’t want to push Tim out, just the opposite. He was worried about Tim. Ideally Dick wanted to bring Tim home and work everything out.

Despite what fannon likes to imagine, Dick never suggested that Tim be put in Arkham. Dick wanted Tim to see a therapist in Metropolis. Grieving Bruce’s loss, Dick was desperately trying to keep what was left of his family together. He couldn’t see that having Tim and Damian in close proximity was a recipe for disaster.

Why was Tim the one to leave and not Damian? The answer again, lies in an abusive childhood. Tim spent years being emotionally neglected by his parents. He was constantly being pushed aside for something or someone deemed by his parents to be more important than he was. Tim was used to be the one left behind, the one who always came second (or third or fourth). If anyone in the family was expendable in a search for Bruce, Tim knew it was him.

Tim and Damian still don’t get along very well but they have settled into an uneasy acceptance of one another in the Rebirth continuity.

The bottom line is that these two will never be best buddies and that’s okay. Not not all siblings end up as good friends. That they can manage to stay under the same roof without bloodshed is a vast improvement over what they used to be like. Could that have happened when Damian first became Robin? Oh hell no. 

It starts one evening when Bruce is off-world and Alfred has invited (ordered) everyone to the manor for a cup of tea. Predictably, this soon devolves into bickering which somehow morphs into all the kids sharing stories about their time in the manor, trying to out-do each other. Here, Alfred starts telling them stories about the people who have lived in this house before; generations of Waynes long gone. One in particular, he tells them, a young woman called Catherine, suffered terribly through her life and died at the hands of a scorned lover in this very house. Sometimes, Alfred claims, you can hear her ghost wandering through the halls, singing sorrowfully or weeping.  

Damian scoffs at this and says that it’s “clearly nonsense”.

And that’s when it truly starts, with one of the kids having the idea that “a few weird noises here, a fluttering curtain there… it should be doable to convince my pseudo-siblings that there’s a ghost.” Except this is the batfamily who are all complete trolls so it’s not one of the kids. It’s all of them. Even Damian figures that “Drake is gullible” and it would be worth the trouble to scare the shit out of Tim.

And so the great ghost-campaign of 2012 begins. Tim and Steph quickly pair up for maximum effect; with Tim putting speakers in the vents that plays a track he found online called “ethereal crying” and Steph taking on the role as “Catherine”, sweeping down the halls in a wig and a floaty gown and fake crying into a handkerchief.

Damian, being tiny, crawls through the vents, playing recordings of a woman crying near wherever Tim is at the moment (doing this he actually manages to break one of Tim’s speakers. He doesn’t notice). When Tim is caught without airpods and actually hears Damian’s recording, he thinks Steph must really be working overtime on the ghost thing.

Dick spends hours crouched on top of beams and chandeliers making sniffling noises, and leaves silk gloves with the initials “C.W.” embroidered on them on everyone’s pillows. Damian is the only one who notices, since only he and Tim actually sleep at the Manor and Tim is always way too sleep-deprived to either take note of or care about what’s on his pillow.

Damian decides that Tim’s the one who left the glove and vows to double his efforts. Tim remains oblivious to the crusade against him.

Jason sneaks into the Manor at night to leave fake blood on the floor outside the west wing. Cass finds him and convinces him that fake blood won’t cut it and they both get way too involved and end up “donating” their own blood to the cause. The blood is mopped up by Alfred before any other sibling can find it.

Damian places portable air-conditioners on the coldest setting over Tim’s favorite spots in the Cave and Library. Tim starts wearing scarfs.

Dick dresses up as a Victorian Lady and stalks the halls of the manor, lamenting “her” fate. In the dark, a been-awake-for-48-hours and high-on-caffeine Tim mistakes him for Stephanie and greets him way too loudly with “diD You GeT A nEW DResS?” This freaks Dick out entirely and he falls out of the open window he had been sadly mourning his death in front of.

Jason and Cass get really stuck on the whole blood thing and leaves a torn-up, bloodied white dress on a hook in the library. Stephanie takes one look at it and thinks that someone has stolen HER dress and ruined it, and takes it as proof for a later date.

Damian, slightly departing from the “ghost persona” in favour of torturing Tim, starts leaving thorny roses where Tim will step on them with bare feet, which is mostly in the shower.

Tim starts questioning his sleeping-schedule and resolves to maybe dial back on energy drinks. He also puts everyones shoes in the freezer when they come over and return them to the hall before they leave, so they’ll think a cold chill has just passed along the floor.

On the whole, they’re all too busy to actually notice what everyone else is up to -or get frightened by it. Bruce however, is not.

Newly returned from off-world, he starts noticing things. Voices in the vents, drafts in the cave, blood on the floor outside the west wing (that he has Alfred mop up). All the kids are fine, but obviously someone is breaking into his house. Obviously.

This leads him to scour the cctv footage where he sees a strange, crying woman meandering through the halls at night. When he investigates the blood, the camera shows him a shadowy figure standing right where the blood was (Cass, geared up because both she and Jason takes this way, way, too seriously). 

His paranoia now fully woken from its (very light) slumber, he tries to find the hole in the Manor’s defenses. Late one evening, when he’s coming back from patrolling the grounds, he sees a victorian woman fall from a second story window with a scream and land in a heap of skirts. When he gets there, she’s gone (Dick made himself scarce, not wanting to be discovered by Tim), but a few days later, he thinks he sees a bloodied, ripped dress on one of the cameras in the library. When he gets there, it’s gone. Meanwhile, Titus keeps bringing him silk gloves with strange initals on them and he hears sniffling cries and singing everywhere. Finally, he reaches a logical explanation.

“I have seen stranger things” he tries to comfort himself, even as he’s putting up fifty new cctv cameras and lines the corridors with salt for good measure. “aliens. demons. the Court of Owls.” He researches ghost-prevention techniques and contemplates whether martial arts would have an effect on a non-entity. He buys iron and re-watches Ghost Busters. Finally, he believes himself both well-equipped enough to handle the threat, and well-informed enough to accurately decide what it is exactly (a ghost born of tradegy, not vengeful but possibly dangerous if crossed).

Damian’s family name on his mother’s side is literally “al ghoul”. He will never be afraid of ghosts (side-effect of having Ra’s as a grandfather). He would believe in a ghost, but only if he met it and performed innumerable tests to be sure.

YES! They’re all little drama babies, but the drama is strong with this one, and Jason would definitely monologue about it. On the inside, sure, but probably out loud at least a couple times.

Barbara would ensure there was photo and video evidence aplenty.

Dick would not be able to get over how cute little kid Bruce is, and he too would ensure he had plenty of things to hold over Bruce for forever. “Hey Bruce, you know, when you were a little kid again you said we should absolutely get another dog so…”

Cass? Obviously little Bruce is the cutest. She enjoys getting him to start rambling about something he’s excited about. She’s already planning how to get him to do that as an adult again because it’s fun.

Steph encourages the consumption of way more amounts of sugar than adult Bruce would ever eat. She claims it’s to combat the brooding of adult Bruce.

Tim? Somehow got stuck with being responsible for feeding Bruce for a day. Did not understand why Bruce didn’t want all the healthy food he prepared. Tim didn’t exactly have kid food as a kid, so has no idea what to feed another kid.

Duke? Loves how many questions Bruce has about his powers and happily answers every single one as Bruce follows him around like a little puppy.

Damian? Horrified when little kid Bruce trips and scrapes his knee and starts crying. He has no idea what to do in this situation, so he imitates Dick as best he can and that seems to work. Also kid Bruce choosing the Superman bandaids over every other kind is not something he’ll be letting his dad forget ever.

Dick bought one of those kids Halloween batman costumes to dress Bruce in. He’s in full baby fever. Actively arguing with Jason because he’s “hogging” Bruce all day. Jason always replies “I’m sorry that i’m the favourite now.” 

Tim and Damian are left to babysit Bruce as everyone e. se does some shopping for the little guy. It is absolute chaos even though they both are trying their best. Bruce somehow got batcow into the house and is riding her. He’s playing pretend that he’s batman. Tim points out Batman doesn’t ride batcow into battle. This greatly upsets Bruce. 

Kid Bruce gives so many compliments all the time, because he has no filter, Stephine makes him repeat them and records it. With Barbara’s help they make the recordings everyone’s ring and text tones. 

Bruce is not only more verbally affectionate, but he’s extremely physically affectionate. Jason reading to Bruce, he cuddles him as he listens. Dick is so jealous. Tim is making 7 step plans to get Bruce to hug him, meanwhile Cass just crouches down with arms open and Bruce practically throws himself at her. Duke plays Hide and Seek with Bruce, and is totally cheating with his powers because otherwise Bruce is way too good at hiding. 

No one tells Jason for 2 days, just introducing Bruce as “Batkid”. He tries to be standoffish, but the kid flocks to him like bee to flowers. He puts it together by dinner, when Damian slips up and calls him Father. 

Soooo, I have seen a lot of people comparing the way that Bruce replaced Dick with Jason versus the way that Dick replaced Tim with Damian. (This happened some on my Batfam Replacement Montage post [x], which is what first brought it to my attention.) For some reason, a lot of people come out of this comparison thinking that Dick was not only just as bad and insensitive as Bruce (if they even think Bruce was in the wrong at all that is) but even that Dick is somehow worse. This legitimately confused the heck out of me. I don’t know if people are reading the same comics as me (though honestly with all the retcons and nonsense going on maybe we aren’t reading the same comics), so I’m just going to break each replacement down for you here and maybe you’ll see where I’m coming from when I think that is completely out of left field. 

Let’s start with Bruce. These panels have Dick (as Nightwing) recounting how things between him and Bruce went down (I’ve rewritten the text just below the image if it is blurry): 

Batman #416 

So while I was still laid up in bed, you dropped the bad news on me. No ifs, ands, or buts…I wasn’t to play Robin anymore. You couldn’t continue to assume the responsibility for a child fighting crime. For six years you trained me to be a crimefighter, then denied me that role. Of course, you assured me that it was for my own good. I lay there with a bandaged shoulder and my life in ruins. You smiled. Kicked a great big hole in my life, then walked out of the room. 

Following an encounter with the Joker, Dick is shot in the shoulder and nearly dies. Instead of comforting Dick, Bruce decides to follow up this traumatic event by firing Dick from Robin immediately. Bruce calls Dick a child, disregarding all the time Dick spent training to become Robin and Dick’s own agency, and basically attempts to kick him out of crimefighting all together. This may not be clear because of the image quality, but Dick literally starts crying in that last panel. But it doesn’t stop there: 

I don’t see what option I had, other than to split. Alfred tried to talk me out of it. It was Alfred who forced money on me so I’d have something to live on. You couldn’t even be bothered to say goodbye. 

Despite his concern for Dick being the motivating factor behind the firing, Bruce doesn’t even seem to be aware that Dick is leaving, and so Alfred is the one that tries to convince Dick to stay in Bruce’s stead. And where is Bruce during all this you may ask??

Sorry, he was busy working on a case at the time. And people wonder why Dick didn’t realize Bruce was doing this out of concern rather than distrust of his capabilities. Anyway, Dick leaves, eventually joins the Titans, and becomes Nightwing. Eighteen whole months pass–a freaking year and a half–and not once does Bruce try to get in touch with Dick to sort things out. Then, Dick finds out about his replacement in the newspaper: 

Bruce fired Dick because he didn’t want a child sidekick. Then he goes out and gets a freaking child sidekick, and, even better, makes him Robin. Robin isn’t just a costume to Dick. In many comics, Dick refers to the Robin role as meaning family, and that’s because Dick specifically crafted Robin as a way to remember his parents. 

Robin Annual #4 and The Titans #16

It doesn’t get much more personal than using your dead mother’s nickname for you and your family’s colors (which across comics are pretty consistently some combo of yellow/green/red) as your hero persona. And Bruce, despite knowing the origins of the costume, felt like he could do whatever he wanted with it. And he didn’t even have the decency to be upfront about it. You can see why this drives me crazy. He spends the rest of the issue beating around the bush and not telling Dick why he adopted Jason and made him Robin, and, in the end, he once again kicks Dick out of the house. Nice parenting Bruce. 

Now with Dick. I’ve seen some people accuse Dick of not talking to Tim and just pulling the Robin mantle right out from under him, but that isn’t really what the comics show us: 

Red Robin #1

Dick tries to talk to Tim about it, and, unlike Bruce, he explicitly states his reasons for giving Damian Robin. He validates Tim, and tells him that they are equals. Even when Tim lashes out, Dick makes it clear that he still wants Tim around, even if it is not as Robin. And, once again unlike Bruce, Dick doesn’t proceed to just abandon Tim when things don’t go his way. He sends Tim’s friends his way and when that doesn’t work, Dick goes to find Tim and try to talk things out in person: 

Red Robin #4

So why doesn’t Tim just tell Dick his theory? That’s because, as much as people apparently want to believe that Tim had the whole thing figured out and it was everyone else’s fault that no one was listening, Tim had no actual evidence whatsoever that Bruce was actually alive. He was kind of in denial about Bruce’s death and all he had was a weak hunch.

Tim rides off without giving any explanations, leaving Dick to deal with all the fallout of Bruce’s “death” by himself. Dick had to abandon everything that he built (Nightwing, his various superhero teams, etc.) in order to take up Bruce’s identity. He had to deal with being Batman, running Wayne Enterprises, and raising Damian (a murderous brat who spent literally all his time insulting and undermining him in those early days), all while managing his own grief. And he had no one but Alfred for support. So maybe he didn’t handle Tim as well as he could have (I don’t really know what he could have done differently but hey if you want to let me know feel free), but I honestly think that under the circumstances he tried his freaking best, which is more than Bruce did for him. And when Tim returns, he immediately expects Dick to put everything on hold to help him, once again without explanation, and what does Dick do?

Red Robin #11

He trusts Tim and puts everything on hold to help Tim out. Even though Tim pretty much left him high and dry when he needed help the most. So yeah, I don’t see where people are coming from when they act like Dick somehow singlehandedly destroyed his relationship with Tim. I don’t understand how Tim could possibly trust Jason (ie the person who very nearly murdered him) more than he trusts Dick (ie the person who mentored and acted as a confidant to him for literal years) in such a short span of time.

Summary: Clint Barton's seen ghosts since he was a kid and they've always been the same: hollow empty things, right up until you draw the circle and light the candle. These days, he uses that talent to earn a living. After a seance goes wrong, he meets a ghost that isn't like the rest, a young man going by the name Bucky Barnes, who died in the Second World War. Confused by how Bucky manages to stay so aware, when other ghosts fade away, Clint goes looking for some answers.

He couldn't help wondering exactly when he was going to be officially replaced and lose the closest thing he'd ever had to a real home. So of course SHIELD decided to partner them together for a long-term undercover mission in the US Army. This was going to be hell.
